The Day the Earth Stood Still

We all knew it was coming: Hollywood ran out of original material. Now you can bet that despite it being a remake of a classic film and I will in no way condone such actions... I will eat the shit sandwich and then buy the DVD on the side.

AICN has posted the first known image from the upcoming remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, which stars Keanu Reeves as Klaatu and Jennifer Connelly as Helen. Here is the one sheet teaser poster for the Christmas release. It certainly looks authentic, but could very well be a mock-up as that has been known to happen. It looks cool enough, so we thought we would share it with you.

The original is perhaps one of the best movies of all time. No copy will ever match it.

That said, if this movie manages to convey the same deeply important message as the original, I'll see it. If only to hear, "Klatu Borda, Niktu, dude".

He'll never escape his 80's movies, will he?

EDIT: There would have to be a "Gort" in there to get the robots attention- unless its name is "Whoa".

Nor should he!

Whoa, hahahaha.

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft......

Speed_Gibson 06-26-2008 02:59 PM

Remake??? Runs at the thought. :orly:
That ranks up there with the thought of redoing Night at the Opera (just a mythical example that would be really bad)

Charlatan 06-26-2008 04:44 PM

What? Keanu isn't playing Gort?

Starshine 06-26-2008 06:21 PM

Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! Damn you Hollywood damn you! *shakes fist*

m0rpheus 06-29-2008 05:01 AM

You know, maybe, just maybe it could be good. Yeah, and maybe I'm a Chinese jet pilot

"Klatto Verata N... Necktie... Nickel... It's an "N" word, it's definitely an "N" word!"

It took 2 days, 18 hours, and 45 minutes for someone to come along with an Army of Darkness reference? Thank you m0rpheus. As for the rest of you, I am disappointed. Very disappointed.

m0rpheus 06-30-2008 12:07 PM

You're welcome.

What's next, remaking the Godfather?

Gone with the Wind?

The Faba 07-02-2008 09:51 PM

I saw previews for this yesterday at Hancock.

I have to say, it's like somebody remade 'To Kill a Mockingbird' With explosions and alien spaceship armadas arising out of the oceans.

Needless to say, I refuse to watch this movie unless someone actively pays me for my time.

Willravel 07-02-2008 10:43 PM

The trailer makes it look as if they're expanding the story.

Hain 07-03-2008 12:18 AM

Damnit, I wish I was in a country where theaters were cheap and had trailers of movies...

As soon as a trailer is online, can someone post here?

When I went to see Hankcock they showed a trailer, but I still can't seem to find it online! But the trailer impressed me much more than the initail thought of the whole remake.

Hain 07-03-2008 10:04 AM

Every entertainment news site says it is not available online, yet.

Willravel 07-03-2008 10:17 AM

It will likely appear on apple.com/trailers within the next few days in standard and HD formats. Likewise, people can expect other big trailers like Quantum of Solace.

lotsofmagnets 07-03-2008 12:09 PM

heh. we were watching the original and when we turned it off there were 2 buildings on fire on tv. on every channel. this was the evening of 9/11 (aust is several hrs ahead)

little_tippler 07-04-2008 07:40 AM

I haven't seen the original but it sounds interesting, after reading about it. Perhaps I will watch the remake; that way I can give you an unbiased opinion. Most remakes aren't worth making, but I don't believe in "sacred" movies, even so. A new perspective on the same story doesn't necessarily have to be worse.

Willravel 07-04-2008 08:15 AM

You're right, it may be as good or better, but The Day the Earth Stood Still has a special place in a lot of people's minds. For me, it's probably one of the best science fiction movies of all time.

Imagine a remake of Gone with the Wind staring Katie Holmes. It could be good, but it'd likely be horrible.

little_tippler 07-04-2008 08:45 AM

trailer is available:

TDTESS 2008

Will, I see what you mean. Though, call me naive but Katie Holmes is not comparable to Keanu Reeves. Also, Katie Holmes would be a very poor match to the fiery and strong Vivien Leigh. But yes, many remakes are cringe-worthy.

Hain 07-04-2008 09:49 AM

Hmmm. I don't know: enticing, visually appealing, suspense and doubt throughout. Maybe, but there are somethings that just seem to contradict the message of the original movie, or even that of the original story.
