Best Movies Ever?

OK, what movies do you guys think are the BEST ever? We've had the worst, and for all I know, there may have been a Best Movies thread too, but if not, here we go.

I got a couple, although, I admit, most of my movies are recent, so I'm probably neglecting some classics, and I apologize.

1. American Beauty (I'm sorry, but I feel if you didn't like this movie, you just didn't understand it.)
2. Training Day
3. Gladiator
4.Tombstone
5. LOTR I and II

MacGnG 06-17-2003 11:20 PM

Back To The Future Trilogy
Tron
Fifth Element
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Hackers

agree with your 1&2, havent seen rest

all i can think of now

mystmarimatt 06-18-2003 12:39 AM

i actually disliked American Beauty the first time, but thought it was amazing the second. probably because the first time i saw it was with my mother, so with her in the room, i was mortified. um... let's see.
Requiem For A Dream was amazing
Moulin Rouge just is achingly beautiful
and Titanic. duh. ;)

Nappa 06-18-2003 12:49 AM

Terminator series : hope 3 doesn't suck
Transformers the Movie : childhood favorite
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : a surprisingly good movie
Das Boot : great submarine movie
Predator : favorite action movie

May not actually be the greatest movies ever, but I can always pop these in and enjoy them.

Yeah its not one of my faves but youre right, that movie is great. If you haven't seen it, you should. And check out the score too.

macduck 06-18-2003 04:01 AM

this will no doubt bring howls of disbelief, but i think
LORD OF ILLUSIONS
is a fantastic film, it has a great clive barker flavor to it, a mix of hopelessnes and eternal mystery combined with memorably human (for the most part) characters and grim, ultimately futile endeavours.

Maveric 06-18-2003 04:35 AM

hmmm, hard to say because everyone's interpretation of "best" isn't always the same. for me the best movies are the ones that I could watch everyday...
  • Lock, stock, and two smoking barrels
  • Boondock saints
  • The Quiet man
  • Rocky
  • Star Wars Empire Strikes Back
  • Clerks
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Reservoir Dogs

AlphaFox830 06-18-2003 09:46 AM

Shall We Dance.

paddyjoe 06-18-2003 05:14 PM

This is a subject I could think about for a week and come up with a whole revised version. Anyway, right now:

Glory
The Wizard of Oz
Jaws
The Sting
Buffalo 66
Braveheart
Slapshot
Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail
Wild at Heart
The Long Riders

(see, I only thought about it for a couple minutes and already edited)

viveleroi0 06-18-2003 05:24 PM

2001, the matrix, blade runner, saving private ryan, das boot, LOTR 1-2 (soon to add 3)

all kubrick films follow

VirFighter 06-18-2003 06:18 PM

Best of movie of all time is Citizen Kane according to AFI.

I personally find it impossible to even list a top five movies of all time because they vary for me week to week. Plus I always kick myself for leaving things out.

I will say that a lot of great movies have been named thus far.

Nikilidstrom 06-18-2003 06:43 PM

I could not possibly make a list like this, at least without breaking it down into genres, but i refuse to even try until Ive seen Boondock Saints. Ive heard a ton about his flic, but apprently my town has banned it or something, because non of the 9 video stores here have it available.

Nostromo 06-19-2003 05:31 PM

The Godfather (parts 1 & 2)
Jaws
North by Northwest
Spinal Tap
Platoon

RoloTomassy 06-19-2003 10:30 PM

I'm in a personal conflict... I don't know if anyone else runs into this problem, but I find there's a difference in my favorite movies, and the movies I think are the best. I'll just go with my favorites.

1) Memento
2) L.A. Confidential
3) Interview with the Vampire
4) Dazed and Confused
5) Goodfellas

The Bolshevist 06-20-2003 12:43 AM

Good listings so far...

Might I add...

-Casablanca ("Are my eyes really brown?")

-Fritz Lang's silent classic Metropolis (NOT the horrible version with the Queen soundtrack, but the new one with the restored "lost" footage...not that I don't like Queen)

-1951 version of Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) with Alistair Sim. (Waiter...more bread! - Ha'penny extra, sir... - No more bread!!)

-Full Metal Jacket. ("M I C K E Y - M O U S E!")

-A Bridge Too Far. ("I'm afraid we're not equipped to accept your surrender. So sorry!")

-The Bond Films...("Nooo, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die...")

-Apollo 13 ("Gentlemen...what are your intentions?")

And of course...

- Schindler's List ("It is a verse from the Talmud...He who saves one life saves the world entire.")

MrFlux 06-20-2003 01:29 AM

Donnie Darko
Training Day
The Crow

Haven't really got 5 favourites but those 3 are all DAMN good.

MacGnG 06-20-2003 11:57 PM

Requiem For A Dream
Schindler's List
Memento
Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail

gotta agree with those

komodo 06-21-2003 12:36 AM

5. The Abyss

4. American Beauty

3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

2. Platoon

1. Aliens

Aliens wasn't a drama, or a philosophical film. It was an action film that didn't take itself to seriously. But, when you come right down to it, it set out to do something (entertain) ... and it did it far better than any movie before or since. Every "space marine" since Aliens has been based on the Colonial Marines. Every dropship pilot has been based on Caberra. Every hardcase Sergeant has been based on Apone. Aliens changed more about sci fi movies, books, and games than any other single film, and that's why it's my number one movie.

crow_daw 06-21-2003 04:12 PM

thanks for posting guys. I knew this would happen, and it did, you guys reminded me of movies that I forgot, like an idiot. Some of the best:
Memento (groundbreaking)
Aliens (a truly smart action movie, and those are few and far between)
Schindler's List (one of those movies you love and hate at the same time, but you can never deny that its brilliant)
Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail (probably the funniest movie ever)
and one that I'm surprised to say no one's posted yet,
Silence of the Lambs (debut of Anthony Hopkins as the freakiest villain in cinema, Hannibal the Cannibal)

H12 06-21-2003 04:52 PM

In no real order...
(keep in mind I don't think any of these are likey some of the greatest movies ever, but they're my favorites and that has to account for something)

-Matrix
-Pulp Fiction
-Monty Python And The Search Of The Holy Grail
-Fight Club
-Truman Show
-The Negotiator

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I hear so many great things about it and it's not listed yet, so I'll give it a mention: The Green Mile.

crow_daw 06-21-2003 06:08 PM

H12, DAMN good list my friend, DAMN good.

Tech 06-21-2003 10:40 PM

Star Wars (new hope) <- i think with the age of the film, people forget just exactly how incredible this movie was when it was made, and how it still stands today.

A few of my favorites include:

Apocalypse Now
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Batman
This is Spinal Tap

There are several others that I could include, but I'll keep the list fairly short.

BastardSamurai 06-25-2003 11:15 PM

My list changes so much, but the one (or two) thing(s) that remains constant are Godfather I and II. Everytime I watch either one, I see something new and amazing about it.

TenDeuChen 06-25-2003 11:26 PM

Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Blue Velvet

Yeah...i like lynch ;)

LotR Trilogy will probably be the best trilogy ever made IF the third is as good as the other two, (and everyone who has seen early cuts have said it is better so...let's hope!)

Mr_Q 06-25-2003 11:28 PM
