Any Firefly / Serenity Fans?

Firefly Relit - Send a letter

Here is the sample letter you'd mail by tomorrow. Short, sweet, & to the point. The rationale behind it is to get SciFi to rerun the series which would likely spawn new viewers. In turn, that might spawn.....who knows?

I'm sending one, it may be futile, but as SciFi says, "If".

Subject: Programming Suggestion for Summer, 2007

To the Sci/Fi Programming Staff:

Please consider adding Firefly for the Summer 2007 season.

Sincerely yours,

xxxxxxxxx

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The follow-up is on January 2nd. Send an e-mail to feedback@scifi.com restating that Firefly be added to the Summer 2007 programming.

That's it!

If you liked the show, take a moment. If you miss the date 'cause this was late, it wouldn't hurt to do it anyway.

Buk 12-30-2006 10:52 PM

Joss Whedon said there is no way they could ever do more episodes of Firefly since all of the main actors are under contract to do other shows.

Willravel 12-30-2006 11:23 PM

Already done. I've been involved in getting Farscape PKW and Serenity going, and we're curently working on getting Futurama, Enterprise, Now and Again, and Arrested Development going again. It's serious work finding the corporate sponsorship, actor, writer, director, producer, etc. availability, and finally getting the network to listen. We had to go around Fox for Futurama (BIG thank you to Sci Fi, you guys rock!!).

Surprisingly, I find time to raise a daughter and work, too.

MexicanOnABike 01-03-2007 11:57 AM

i thought the movie was great but the serie wasnt. i actualy downloaded it and i couldnt watch more than 1 episode. it simply didnt keep me interested like other shows have. maybe if i saw it before the movie. i dunno.

snicka 01-04-2007 11:23 AM

I would love to see Firefly on again but I belive Kaylee is going to be joining Stargate Atlantis soon and it wouldn't be the same without her.

slant 01-05-2007 04:45 PM

That is very disheartening news from Whedon.

amire 01-05-2007 07:23 PM

I'm the opposite of mexicanonabike. I absolutely loved the series, but I feel a bit lukewarm about the movie. While it was beautifully shot and had a lot of great action sequences, the characters weren't as familiar to me as they were in the series. Mal was at a low point in his career, and Book wasn't with the group for most of the movie. The other characters (except for River and Simon) just didn't get enough screentime to become familiar. The series, on the other hand, had enough time to develop each character and give them wonderful, individual personalities.

It's really a shame that the show was cancelled. I really wish I knew why the exectutives decided to cancel it. It was beautifully shot, for a TV show; it had amazingly interesting and beautiful characters; and it had storylines and writing that were a whole lot of fun. I'm sure that its cancellation was due to low numbers of viewers, but MANY shows don't pick up their fans until the third or fourth seasons. Seinfeld didn't really take off until Season 3, for example.

I pray that good SciFi hasn't been completely lost. I just don't see any other Star Trek: TNGs or Fireflys on the horizon. I pray that I'm wrong.

spectre 01-05-2007 07:27 PM

A friend of mine showed my Serenity and I thought it was great. I've been trying to catch reruns of Firefly on tv, but I seem to miss them most of the time or catch the exact same episode each time. The show seems really good from the one episode that I have seen though.

Do yourself a favour and check out Battlestar Galactica. I too lamented Firefly's end, but most of my cravings for that sort of thing have been satiated by Galactica.

Many of my friends who are SciFi fans love Battlestar. I'll definitely give it a try!

And besides Battlestar, there are many sci fi classics I have yet to see...I haven't seen all of Start Trek: TNG or Dr. Who, yet.

Sultana 01-08-2007 12:53 PM

Like amire I enjoyed the series much more than the movie. I *love* the series!

But unlike many Browncoats I am not willing to expend energy into trying to get it picked up again. If it wasn't done after the goram movie, folks, it ain't happening.

I treasure my season one collection, and encourage others to get it too.

Oh, and another great little series was "The Lost Room" on the Sci Fi channel. Really well done. And I do think that has great potential to be picked up and go further. Cross your fingers, and keep your key!

cujojack 01-09-2007 11:13 PM

good show, great movie.

Why wonderwoman?

fatbob 01-10-2007 04:38 AM

Just got the Firefly series for Christmas on DVD - WOW! amazing!

am going to buy the Serenity movie today and watch at the weekend?
I can't believe there is no chance of this series returning, how does that happen when shite like Will and Grace just goes on and on an on???

spindles 01-15-2007 06:15 PM

well, fox really stuffed this show by not showing the pilot episode first (the train job was the first episode aired). No wonder the viewers were confused when you don't get the intro that the pilot episode had.

Gotta say I'm with Sultana on this one. Got my series DVDs and Serenity DVD. I'll just have to be happy with that.

I disagree man, after just 3 episodes, I'm liking it more and more every time. I figured I should give it a shot again because so many friends said how good it was.

Willravel 01-15-2007 08:13 PM

I'd still be interested to see if we can get new episodes made.

Nikilidstrom 01-15-2007 10:20 PM

I got to watch some of the episodes for the first time over the past couple of days because of another link on the TFP about online tv show archives. I now see what all of the fuss is about, as Firefly is/was an excellent show with great characters and atmosphere. I also enjoyed the movie, however it does gloss over the character development a bit, as most tv show-turned-movies do. Its a shame that quality programming like this gets dumped, but shit like Desperate Housewives , Survivor, and Grey's Anatomy keep right on rolling. This is why I never watch network TV. Well, this and hockey.

spectre 01-15-2007 10:28 PM

I just picked up the series for only $20. Definitely worth it for that price.

Battlestar Galactica... yig.... yig...

...careful, it will sink its hooks into you.

Star Trek = Science Fiction ([yawn] this is so 1950s...)
Star Wars = Space Opera (Okay, now you have my attention...)
Firefly/Serenity(1) = Campy Sci-fi/Western-hybrid Dramedy (What?! Wicked!)
Battlestar Galactica(1) = Space-operatic Drama* (Yes! Finally!)

(1) These series share a unique characteristic: they both have interests in Newtonian physics.

But about Firefly/Serenity: I'm happy with the fact that there was some closure with the feature film... and (at the risk of drawing your ire) I think this is more than we should have expected. I think much of the series' appeal for me is its ill-advised fate (i.e. "Poor, tragic Firefly...:( ). What's done is done. I'm happy with what we got.

*nothing can prepare you... nothing!

MexicanOnABike 01-25-2007 08:23 PM

oh man. ok i take back my 1st comment. i thought it was a great season! great story and characters. i Even checked out the comics. there's 3 comics for 1 story. it's a 3part... It's really good. great art and storyline. It's set between the last episode and the movie so it explains things we didnt really get to know from the movie or serie. :) check it out if you can. (torrents as a last resort)

Taja 02-04-2008 05:51 PM

I realize the last post here was a year ago... but am I the only TFP Firefly fan still re-watching the series on DVD?

I'm very careful not to get too tired of it, watching about one episode a month and savoring (in every sense of the word) each and every moment of it.

No, you're not the only one. Us obsessive fans are still watching - I've gotten three new people watching over the last couple months alone. At the moment, I'm actually reading the Firefly Official Visual Companion, Vol. 2. I think I may need help...or at least the start of the last season of BSG...

Hain 02-04-2008 10:03 PM

I had seen the movie and thought it was great. I wasn't into the series until my friend bought it. I watched a few episodes and was hooked again. I was really disappointed to hear the news from Whedon- I even own a brown coat!

Battlestar Galatica just didn't hold my attention. After watching enough episodes I felt the show was either too... hokey or portrayed the human misery far too well. Either way, I might get into it once the series ends and my friend owns all the seasons on DVDs. That way I don't have commercial breaks to reflect upon what I think of the show.

Some other shows I was pissed went down the drain after a season: Threshold, Surface, John Doe (If they get rid of the last 3 episodes, they can bring it back!) ...

Don't get me wrong I loved Farscape, but that show kinda went down the tubes after season two in my opinion. I think I kept watching it because it was a Henson company creation. Can they do wrong?

xepherys 02-05-2008 06:11 AM

Yeah, BSG doesn't fill the Firefly void for me at all. Joss' character development is key to his shows successes. It's a big reason I loved Buffy so much. The show was silly, but the characters were lovable!

LoganSnake 02-05-2008 06:17 AM

It's one of my favorite shows of all time. I've watched the first season twice on DVD already and plan on watching it more with some time in between viewings. I absolutely love the entire crew of Serenity and really wish they would make more episodes, but, like Joss said, there's negative chance of there being any.

The movie I didn't like as much...

Taja 02-05-2008 06:30 AM

Out of curiosity, do any of you have an especially favorite character? (Yeah, I know they're all loveable, but does any one stand out more for you?)

xepherys 02-05-2008 09:58 AM

Hmmm, my favorite character is Kaylee followed by River. Kaylee is, of course, edible she's so damned cute. And I like her semi-naive, somewhat nonchalant attitude about everything. River just amuses me when she's not busy being crazy. The one episode where she starts talking with the heavy Irish accent to Badger. That's one of my favorite parts of the whole series. My third favorite would be Mal or Jayne... they're tied. My favorite non-repeating character is the crazy bounty hunter that comes after River in one of the last episodes. He was entertaining as hell!

spindles 02-05-2008 01:39 PM

I can't believe no one wants Wash as their favourite. The scene where he is play acting with the dinosaurs is hilarious "Mine is an evil laugh" :)

Taja 02-05-2008 04:26 PM

I just can't pick a favorite- I truly love them all!

Capt'n Tight Pants has the best sense of humor, timing, smile and ... not to mention ass! (Loved "Trash") Jayne, you just can't help but love him. He tries so hard to be a "bad guy". But his hat just really does it for me. Wash is absolutely adorable! "Like a leaf on the wind"... I really cried at the end of Serenity. Simon and Shepherd complete the group in such a wonderful way.

Inara is so beautiful and fiesty, I especially love her banter with Mal. Zoe is gorgeous and kicks ass! (I really like that!) Kaylee is too cute for words, and her eyes drive me nuts. River.... so graceful, so deadly, so innocent and so broken.

guy44 02-05-2008 09:22 PM

Favorite character...oy...tough one. Probably depends on my mood at the time. Can I pick the spaceship, Serenity? It's a realistic ship, with bathrooms, functionality, rust, and the design is delightfully, crappily cobbled together. All-in-all, a billion times more live-in-able than any Enterprise (did I mention that Serenity actually has toileting facilities) and far more sensibly put together than the Millenium Falcon. Plus, it doesn't have guns!

levite 02-05-2008 11:28 PM

For me, probably a toss-up: I have a huge thing for Kaylee! Something about that fresh, not-too-scrubbed country-girl look, her cheerful penchant for painting the ship, and a gorgeous ass.

But I'm also, generally speaking, a big fan of Wash. Have been ever since that first scene. "Curse your sudden, but inevitable, treachery!"

That just strikes me as you watch House, M.D. for House's character development.

I mean I loved all those characters. Wash was great, I loved his humor.

But I must say that the best villain from any movie ever was from the movie. The agent... wow. When he said, "Do you think I will have a place in that world?" hit me so hard that he believes what he is doing is right. Best villain ever. If I became a villain, I wanna have motivations for self sacrifice like that guy. //kidding, but not really//

kathy 06-11-2008 06:09 AM

I´m Firefly free for 4 weeks now...because I gave my DVDs to a friend and she loves it. But I´m afraid I´ll start watching again as soon as I get the series back.
If I had to choose only one favourite character it would probably be River.
But what I love most about Firefly is the relationships between the charakters and the music.

snowy 06-11-2008 06:56 AM

I love it, but I've resisted watching all of the episodes because 1) I know there aren't any more, and it makes me sad, and 2) I'd want to get into the fandom and start writing, and I've already got my hands full reading, writing, and reviewing for another one.

Hain 06-11-2008 07:52 AM

Have to agree, the movie got me interested in the series. I love the series- but am pissed it won't come back. Firefly was there for me during real tough times. You know: when Farscape started going down the shitter.

I love Kaylee, if only for her "twixt my nethers" line in the movie. SHe's cute and fiesty.

Wash is me. In the same way that Joss always claimed that Zander and Wash were based after him, Wash is me.

And I wish there was more show to see the character arcs of Jane and Book. Jane was getting really interesting and Book has so many unanswered questions.

m0rpheus 06-11-2008 12:43 PM

So, it's not the show or a new movie but Joss has released a couple of comic book mini-series of Firefly. Both take place between the last episode of Firefly and Serenity. Also both are co-written by Joss himself along with Brett Matthews who wrote the script for the episode Heart of Gold.
The first one released is Serenity: Those Left Behind. It is available in Trade Paper Back and takes place pretty much right before Serenity. It explains why Inara and Book leave Serenity and wraps up one of the plots from Firefly, Spoiler: The Hands of Blue, and sets up the movie.

The second is Serenity: Better Days which takes place some time between the end of the show and the above Those Left Behind. It just finished up but should be in TPB before long. Basically the premise is that the crew comes across the biggest score of their lives and is suddenly rich beyond all imagination. Then things go bad.

Apparently the next mini will focus on Sheppard Book pre-Firefly and fill in some (but not all) of the details on who and what he is/was.

Frosstbyte 06-11-2008 11:39 PM

I suppose this is something of a threadjack (maybe not) but I really wish Joss had had the decency to let the series be what they were instead of all this stupid comic book nonsense. That goes for Buffy and Angel, too. They were great, I love watching them, but they ended. Decisions were made about how, where and why to end them. I don't know if it is money or hubris or what, but the comics feel to me just as bad as Lucas changing and adding scenes to the original Star Wars Trilogy. They're not necessary. They're not really true to the stories or th characters the TV series told. Ah well.

I suppose there's a lot of demand for those universes and characters to go on existing. I'll watch my box sets and be happy with what they were.

You mean the decision that was made was by FOX to cancel Firefly?

How the heck are the stories not true to the TV series??? To me it felt like meeting back up with old friends. Yeah Better Days isn't really that important to the overall arc of the story but then again neither were some of the episodes. Those Left Behind links the TV show to the movie and is way more important to the overall story than, say, Heart of Gold.
Joss didn't get the chance to tell the stories that he wanted with Firefly because Fox screwed the show and then the movie wasn't a mega success.

I hope you continue to enjoy the box set and the movie but you really are missing out on the rest of the story he would have told on TV given the chance because of your anti-comic book bias. Hopefully others can get past it because when I read Mal in the book it I hear Nathan Fillion speaking the lines.

xepherys 06-13-2008 10:14 AM

must... get... the books... :|

Redlemon 07-02-2008 09:15 AM

Hey, why didn't anyone here tell me about Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? Joss Whedon! Nathan Fillion! Neil Patrick Harris! Superheros! Songs! Free online streams!

* Part 1 - Tuesday July 15
* Part 2 - Thursday July 17
* Part 3 - Saturday July 19

These episodes will “air” online only until July 20. Follow the link above for the trailer.

Frosstbyte 07-02-2008 02:21 PM

m0rpheus, I haven't actually read too many of the Firefly books, so they might be different. I was mostly speaking to my experiences with the Buffy and Angel continuations. I know for a fact that the series resolved certain character storylines (Wesley's and Anya's, for example) specifically because the shows were ending, when they had planned to do something else with them had the show continued.

Firefly really never had the chance to establish itself or the time to develop the characters and their stories enough, so I suppose there was a lot more unexplored material just kind of left hanging and out there, but with his other series, I think he should have let things be.

The decisions I was referring to was not the decision to cancel/end the show but rather the plot decisions made in response to cancellation/termination in order to wrap up storylines.

Strange Famous 07-04-2008 12:21 PM

I never saw the show at all and had no idea what the background to the movie was.

I liked it, it was pretty cool - my fave bit was:

Spoiler:

When River raced into the room to get the medicine bag with the antidote to save her brother, and then got caught by the reavers... I figured she would get killed and have a heroic death cos she wasnt exactly a sympathetic character... but in the end turned out all those reaver motherfuckers simply got merked and fucked up and laid out on fucking platters.... haha... was a good "yeah!" kind of moment.

xepherys 07-04-2008 03:18 PM

SF, that IS a great part. I wish the second season would've come to light. Before the movie, nobody really knew that River had it in her. Wait, the part at the bar was in the movie too, right? Yeah, I think so. Anyways, it was a great part. The "Ballet of Death" as we call it here in the Williams' household.

Welcome to the cult. We typically meet here.

CinnamonGirl 06-09-2009 11:51 PM

 Well, as a longtime Buffy fan, I think I've been in the "cult" for a while now.

Definitely need to catch up on the Buffy comics... my local comic shop closed down, and I'm at LEAST ten issues behind.

Sigh....really, REALLY wish there'd been more Firefly.

Firefly was my first exposure to Christina Hendricks' awesome bewbs, and for that I will be forever grateful.

Ah, yes.... that whore..

lol...no, her character was cool. Beautiful, obviously. And I loved the way Mal played off/responded to her in "Trash."

ratbastid 06-10-2009 04:37 AM

We've JUST discovered Firefly in the last few weeks. We've been slowly doling out episodes to ourselves. Completely love it. Completely.

We seem to spend a lot of time discussing who our favorite character is, too. I've concluded that I love most whoever spoke last. Jayne will say something and I'll be a Jayne fan, then Wash will pipe up and I'm all about Wash, etc, etc. We've gotten to the same place we're at with 30 Rock--we watch it with a finger on the pause button, because at least once an episode we have to stop the tape and scream about something.

Mal: Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir!
Mal: Ain't we just?

Ditto.

This has to be one of the best tv shows ever. The one thing I always go on about when it comes to this series is that as a sci-fi it stands out as one that somewhat abides by Newtonian physics (no sound in space) and is an anti-space opera...no sweeping vistas of the big, bad empire; believable characters with real flaws and failures; a dedicated focus on the characters' point of view vs. the enemy; etc.

Although I'm not sure I would call it "hard" sci-fi, I like the attention to detail in regard to how they approached the filming and special effects.

Of course, that it's a space western doesn't hurt.

I need more sci-fi like this.

/nerd

Y'know, I was disappointed in the movie. I thought it had too much action and not enough personality. Loved the series, never saw the comics.

CinnamonGirl 06-10-2009 12:06 PM

Well, I very much prefer the series over the movie. Thinking I'm going to go back and watch it all the way through again.

Did anyone else think Mal came off waaaaaay more asshole-ish at the beginning of the movie than anytime in the series? When he was arguing with Simon, I kept thinking about how, in the series, he considered Simon & River part of his crew.

squeeeb 06-10-2009 12:27 PM

CinnamonGirl - i don't think Mal came off anymore assholeish than he sometimes was. while he always considered simon part of his crew, he wasn't always "super nice" to him. but i only saw the movie once, in theaters, so i might be forgetting exactly how he was.

either way, i liked the movie very much, i was afraid they would ruin it, but they seemed to stay pretty true.

i FUCKING LOVED the show. it pisses me off that the one damn show on tv i actually wanted to watch and would actually sit through got canned. "Trash" and "Objects in space" were the best episodes. now there are books? i didn't know about the books. i shall look into them and obtain them.

vinceco252 06-10-2009 12:39 PM

I AM watching it... couldn't resist.

LordEden 06-12-2009 05:38 AM

The Sci-fi channel will be showing the Serenity movie this Saturday @ 6:30 and once a month for the next 2 months. Great chance for people to show the movie off to others who haven't been pulled in and for those who haven't seen it enough.

Loved the series, the movie was good but I think it was just more suited to TV format. Apparently someone has the rights to make an online RPG for the Firefly universe but it may not happen, I thought that would be pretty cool.

It seems the Science Channel will start airing Firefly starting next Sunday night.
Although they start off with the episode "The Train Job" and not Serenity, I'm looking forward to seeing them again.
