Jericho

So is anyone else watching this? I know a lot of the people reviewing it online are giving it a barely passable grade, but the wife and I have loved it since the start.

Conceptually, it's pretty neat. About a small town in Kansas and what happens after several American cities are hit by nuclear blasts.

Anyone else enjoying? Not enjoying?

Daval 10-12-2006 11:35 AM

I'm glad you started this thread, I was about to start a jericho thread this morning but got busy.

My wife and I watch this show as well and quite like it. It's starting to get pretty interesting. What is the back story with Robert Hawkins? Is he a good guy or bad guy? My theory is he is a spook that had a heads up that this was coming (along with the radiation guy who just died) and escaped out of the big city with his wife and kids before the bombs came.

Bill O'Rights 10-12-2006 12:04 PM

I like the concept. It's kind of an updated Alas, Babylon.

hunnychile 10-12-2006 06:56 PM

So far I like Jericho...it's starting to move faster (thankfully, cuz that's why I truly hate Lost), and it seems so weirdly current. I'm hoping they keep moving faster with the secret agenda that Hawkins has going on. He's definitely a loose cannon of sorts and an agent. Hopefully we won't get too bogged down with the party life of the bored teenagers in a City with limited power and resources. Yikes no iPod! Oh My! It still makes me have flash backs to the days of "duck and cover" when I was in 3rd grade in Ohio and the Cuban Missle Crisis was happening in the US. I was too young to really understand - but it sure seemed scary at the time.

There are lots of story directions this show can take so I am looking forward to the next 2 or 3 episodes.

snowy 10-14-2006 08:57 PM

I really like this show. But then I like most things dealing with this sort of thing. I really liked "The Postman", for example. Not the Kevin Costner movie, but the book that the movie was based on. Things about the destruction of important parts of our modern life fascinate me, and I find it interesting to think about all we would lose if we did lose our cities--our trade infrastructure, our banking systems, parts of the power grid, etc.

So I think it will be cool to watch this show unfold and see where it goes.

That's the first thing I thought of when we watched the pilot. I don't quite remember when I first read that maybe 7th grade something but i've read it several times since, good book.

Alot of parallels between the two. Somethings fishy with that black guy. He knew it was coming and moved his family there specifically but he knows alot more considering all the gear he brought with him. Hasn't been canceled yet so i'm curious to see how it all unfolds.

m0rpheus 10-16-2006 11:41 AM

I'm enjoying it so far. I'm kinda waiting to see where they are going to go with it before I make my judgement though.

Etarip 10-16-2006 01:25 PM

Been following it online, linky:
http://www.cbs.com/innertube/

I can't wait to find out who the're going to pin the attacks on.

ASU2003 10-16-2006 05:50 PM

It is pretty good, and I like the idea. They took some liberties with what would (or should) happen in the wake of a nuclear blast if they had been experts on nuclear radiation survival. One of the first things is that the water would be pretty radioactive after the rains would have drained into the rivers and lakes. Don't go around them. Then they should be wearing dust masks and rinsing off clothes/plastic rainjackets before entering into buildings. Plus they should take off their shoes before going into buildings. They should be sleeping in the shelters or basements and only spending as little time outside as possible (not having a bar-b-que outdoors...) And I wonder why the EMP wave from the nuclear blast didn't fry their electronics (cars, LCD TVs, radios,...). I would think that an enemy would know about detonating a bomb about 300km over Kansas to take out any non-sheilded electric device pluged in.

But, overall it is a good show and makes you think about what you would do if you were in that situation.*

*rule #1 - Fill up every container you can find with water as soon as possible. The water will be radioactive for weeks once the fallout mixes into it.

Daval 11-13-2006 06:58 AM

I finally caught up on my PVR's episodes of this show over the weekend. I still like the show but it's moving a little slow for my liking, the mayor is sick storyline is kind of boring, however I'm still very intrigued by the Hawkings storyline. Who and what is he...... I have no doubts that the badge was fake and planted - it was probably the favour that he asked his daughter to do hide the badge in an easily findable spot.

*Nikki* 11-16-2006 11:49 AM

Hey I am watching this also, Daval and I always like the same shows :) Next week is the season end already!! I wonder what will happen?

balderdash111 11-16-2006 02:18 PM

Well, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you all on this one. I've had a season pass to this on my tivo b/c I was interested in the idea of the show, but I am very close to killing it.

I've pretty much decided i don't really care what happens - at least not enough to spend the hour a week on it. The only interesting plot line to me is Hawkins, but it's just not worth the time investment.

Sorry Jericho. I have one episode left on the tivo and if that doesn't increase my level of interest, it's sayonara season pass....

hunnychile 05-09-2007 05:45 PM

SPOILER ALERT!

I can't believe how this show finally got better in the last three episodes and then they DID what they DID tonight
to one of the only really GOOD CHARACTERS on this show!?!?

Is this show ending "for good" in one week or not?

The CBS site doesn't even hint at whether it's done for good or what....
but to kill Johnson Green in such a stupid way...(any military person
will tell you that you follow the tanks, you don't walk beside them!)

GEEZ - that was really shitty of the writers!

warrrreagl 05-09-2007 08:01 PM

I especially liked the part where they're all getting blasted by a wall of gunfire and Jake suddenly calls out, "Draw their fire!"

Classic.

warrrreagl 05-17-2007 04:31 AM

Cancelled.

Fucking shit-eating network bastards!

Daval 05-17-2007 06:27 AM

are you serious? that is complete bullshit if its true!

Daemon1313 05-17-2007 12:16 PM

The show was a good concept but the writing was insanely bad.

Yup it's true unfortunately. Apparently ratings went down 25% after the whole mid-season hiatus (aka lets give people a few months to forget about the show).
The only potential good news is that the producers had totally expected to be renewed so maybe they will shop the show around and get another network to pick it up.

The first of many shipments already on its way to New York

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
May-21-2007

When the first orders for nuts started to trickle in to his family's 78-year-old business Friday, Jeffrey Braverman had no idea what he was getting himself into.

About 50 orders had been placed in a short time to New Jersey retailer Nuts Online, all in reference to a television show called "Jericho," a show that Braverman said he barely had heard of, let alone watch.

"When we first started getting these orders, and we realized what was going on, my first thought was, 'What are these weirdos doing?' It was bizarre," Braverman told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "But you know what? These are real people. These are normal people. They have been calling up, and these are some real nice people and I understood where they were coming from."

Braverman thought about one of his favorite television shows, "Lost," and how he would feel if suddenly ABC pulled it off the air like CBS did with "Jericho." That's when he realized his company would do whatever they could to help fans of "Jericho" make a statement with its "Nuts to You, CBS!" campaign. And Tuesday morning, the network's New York offices will have more than 1,000 pounds of peanuts -- enough to make more than 2,000 people quite satisfied -- sitting in its mailroom.

"These people are really hoping that this will make an impact, and I don't think they'll be disappointed," Braverman said. "In this first order alone, we have 40 25-pound boxes of nuts being shipped. It's kind of hard to ignore that."

Sending nuts is not cheap, and usually involves quite a bit more than a few dollars to order and ship, Braverman said. But as the individual orders grew from a handful to hundreds, he knew Nuts Online had to open things up for more fans to participate. So the company, through its new "Nuts for Jericho" page, decided to take the bold step of offering nuts sales in bulk wholesale, meaning even if fans were just donating $5, they could contribute to an overall pool of nuts that would then be sent to CBS as they were being prepared. At last count early Monday evening, fans had ordered more than 1,801 pounds of nuts through the wholesale method, spending about $2,440. And that number continues to grow, Braverman said.

"It's not necessarily profitable to us," Braverman said. "But in the long term, we really hope people appreciate it. It was crazy for us trying to fill orders. Normally, our shipper leaves at 5 p.m. but we still had about 450 pounds of nuts to go, so they stayed late and let us get it done."

The issues raised from taking the orders went beyond whether the venture would be profitable or not, however, Braverman said. There also was a concern that CBS might reject the shipments, and cost Nuts Online -- a family-owned business steeped in tradition -- even more money.

"That would be bad, because we would have to pay for it to come back, and we would have all this product that people had already paid for," Braverman said. "But we put notes on the cases asking them to please don't discard the cases. They are all freshly roasted peanuts, so give them to co-workers, or donate them to a good cause. Put them to good use."

Nuts Online is one of several companies fans had targeted to ship nuts, a play on some of the final dialogue of the "Jericho" series that Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) says to the sheriff of New Bern when asked to surrender. It was his way of telling the advancing soldiers from that town to go to hell. Fans have since adopted that as their own mantra, and hope to do for Jericho what tabasco sauce a few years ago did for UPN's "Roswell."

With the orders have come hundreds of pieces of e-mail to the nuts company, something Braverman said he has been spending a great deal of time personally responding to.

"I'm literally sending hundreds of e-mails back to people," he said. "It's an amazing thing. You have all these people coming out of the woodwork, and they are thanking us. People are telling us that we had made their day, and that they are really happy."

And CBS might want to take note, because Braverman wants CBS to give "Jericho" a chance, so that he can give it a chance as a viewer.

"People were calling up and placing orders on the phone, and when they were doing it, they were giving us the lowdown on the show," Braverman said. "Now I want to go watch it on the [CBS] Web site. This has a chance to bring in so many more viewers, people who have never seen the show before who see all this and now want to watch the show. It's great how something like this can be passed along to brothers and sisters and friends, and how it can really grow an audience."

The peanuts hit the spot...........

http://apnews.myway.com//article/200...D8PJISL80.html

Quote:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Jericho" fans who slammed CBS with protests over the drama's cancellation have won the battle: It will return next season, the network said Wednesday.

It was an unusual display of viewer might since networks usually put ratings ahead of even the most passionate, well-organized fan base. But CBS said the show deserved another chance, while cautioning that it must prove it has wider appeal.

"Wow! Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a letter to "Jericho" boosters.

The letter was released to The Associated Press.

"You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard," Tassler wrote, and seven episodes have been ordered for midseason 2007-08. "In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more 'Jericho,' we will need more viewers."

Fans must do their part to rally interest while the network does its job, she said.

CBS is planning a campaign to reintroduce "Jericho," including rerunning the show on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips online and releasing the first season on DVD on Sept. 25. The show's return date and scheduling has yet to be determined.

CBS had to complete deals with cast members, including star Skeet Ulrich, before announcing its decision.

Networks rarely reverse a show's axing but CBS has proven its flexibility at least once before. In 1983, after "Cagney & Lacey" was canceled and the network was bombarded with protests, the police drama was brought back in 1984 - and ran successfully to 1988.

Since "Jericho" was canceled last month the network has been deluged with calls, messages and shipments of nuts signifying viewer displeasure.

"We are tired of the networks (not just CBS) tossing aside quality programming," was the message carried by jericholives.com, one of several web sites protesting the cancellation. "Enough! We're going to fight for this one."

Clarke Ingram, a "Jericho" fan from Pittsburgh, Pa., and a spokesman for jericholives, said Tuesday that the drama about a Kansas town isolated by a nuclear terrorist attack deserved renewal for its daring premise, writing and acting.

"People would paint this as teenagers in tinfoil hats" rallying behind the show, said Ingram, 50, an operations manager for two radio stations. "That's not what this is. These are educated professionals."

Several factors worked in the show's favor: It appealed to the young adult viewers sought by advertisers and was one of CBS' most popular shows streamed online, indicating an audience beyond that measured by traditional ratings.

CBS also likely took into consideration the dent a long hiatus put in the show's viewership, the same scheduling misstep that hurt ABC's "Lost" and NBC's "Heroes."

Last fall, "Jericho" was averaging 10.5 million viewers; when it returned in the spring, it drew about 8.1 million, about a 23 percent decline from the first half of the season.

The display of fan enthusiasm included the delivery of 50,000 pounds of peanuts to its New York offices. In the season finale, a character replies "Nuts!" to a demand that the beleaguered town of Jericho surrender.

That's the same response that a U.S. general in World War II made to a German demand for surrender at the Battle of the Bulge.

Another positive outcome of the fan campaign: CBS is donating the protest peanuts to charities, including one that sends care packages to troops overseas.

pixelbend 06-07-2007 04:50 AM

Ok, it's back, now we just have to get people to watch it.

Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your mailman...watch Jericho!

m0rpheus 02-13-2008 05:15 AM

So any body watch the first new episode?
I liked it but it will take a while to get used to Johnston Green not being there as he was one of my favorite characters.

Fremen 02-13-2008 09:26 PM

I watched, and I liked the fuck out of Esai Morales' character, Col. Hoffman.

I've liked Esai Morales as an actor since La Bamba.

Jake as the sheriff seems a natural.

hunnychile 02-14-2008 04:27 AM

Yep, Esai Morales was a very nice addition to the cast. He's another hottie IMHO.

Jake as the sheriff is gonna be interesting at least. Jake's brother, however, is a major panty waist!!

And more love interest has GOT to happen.....or that show is history.

blahblah454 02-14-2008 10:03 AM

I watched about the first 10 or so episodes of this. But it was nothing like I expected it to be. To me it just seemed like a small town drama, hardly had anything to do with USA getting nuked to hell.

Overall I was really disappointed in this show. I am not saying it was bad, it was just nothing at all like I was expecting. If they make it a little more interesting I would start watching it again.

guy44 02-14-2008 07:33 PM

I dunno. I watched the whole first season, despite the fact that the show never really seemed to be all that great to me. Leaden dialogue, wooden acting (oh my god somebody stop Skeet Ulrich, although the guy playing Johnston Green was really good), and silly plots kept getting in the way of what was really a brilliant concept. I love - LOVE - the idea of a TV show in which a few small communities in Kansas, spared the nuclear bombs and the attendant fallout, struggle to stay alive and together.

But why with the mysteries and the conspiracies and the hokey family barbeque's where everyone in town is invited, like they all just got finished watching a season of Leave It To Beaver together? This show could have stayed insular, within the town, with truly terrifying rifts between people. I can't help but think of the Twilight Zone episode in which the friendly, small-town neighbors turn on each other as they all try to secure a place in the only fallout shelter; that episode said more about human nature and the fear of WMDs, and in a more intelligent manner to boot, than every minute of Jericho added together.

It would have been great if, say, the whole town were coming apart at the seams all season (like what would really happen in real life), with the "good" folk barely keeping control by force, when they all have to learn to come together in an inspiring (and disturbing) display of community and tribalism against the war-like neighboring town that was featured at the end of season one.

Hmm. I guess I'm just going to have to stick with Battlestar Galactica for my brilliant entertainment-as-metaphor-for-a-post-9/11-world kick.

Too bad, too. I really think Jericho could have been something.

ASU2003 02-27-2008 10:16 PM

I think this show is great.

The conspiracies are there because what the media and government tell people can sometimes be far from the truth. How do you figure out who is telling the truth?

And if something like that happened, I could see how a small town would work together. The rifts between people wouldn't neccesarily happen since you wouldn't want the rest of the town against you.

Pac-man04 02-28-2008 10:23 AM

For those that weren't to happy with the 1st season of the show might be taken back a bit by this 2nd season. They really had to quicken the pace in order to get the whole story out with the of this short season. I was on the fence after the 1st season but now I can't wait to see where this 2nd season take us. Im getting more and more addicted with each passing week!!!

Daval 03-06-2008 08:04 PM

Wow, just watched this weeks episode. That was probably one of the best episodes of the season. Hopefully the military guy joins with the resistance now. what a shocker that ending was!

Fremen 03-06-2008 11:05 PM

Yeah, it was definitely a great episode.

I never knew I could hate a character of D.B. Sweeney's this much.
He's usually playing good guys.

Wonder how long it'll take before someone grows a pair and sends him out to the cornfield.

Reese 03-07-2008 07:06 PM

Season 2 is has definitely been better than the first. Man, "Oversight" (last episode) was great. Spoiler: Not exactly what I was expecting since Bonnie was talking about leaving I figured she'd just go to Cheyenne and be written off the show that way..

Daval 03-13-2008 05:14 AM

Yet another good episode this week. I can't believe there are only two episodes left. I hope Space or another cable network pick up this show because with the declining ratings there's no way that CBS will pick it up again.

m0rpheus 03-19-2008 01:44 PM

I really hope Space picks this show up. Season two has been awesome.

Edit: Hey I just noticed. This post was brought to you by... The Devil. (It was my six hundred and sixty sixth post). Maybe he can do something about getting Jericho renewed.

ASU2003 03-24-2008 07:20 PM

With all the other crap that is on TV, I can't believe they are canceling this show 'again'.

But at least this time they might finish it with a decent ending.

Charlatan 03-24-2008 07:32 PM

Cancelled and I haven't even seen an episode yet. I suppose the chances that it will ever air here are now slim to none.

We need to get a Sci-Fi Channel... it is sorely lacking from our mix of channels here.

m0rpheus 03-25-2008 02:46 PM

Apparently the ending will be open ended. They had two endings one a cliffhanger (to be shown if they were renewed), and the other an open ended one that would provide closure to the series if canceled but allow more to be done if it was renewed.
Actually I was thinking the yesterday that they really should continue this series in another format. I picked up the Firefly comic book last week, and really if we can't get Jericho on TV it would be cool if it were continued in some way.

Daval 03-27-2008 04:46 AM

Well, finally watched the finale yesterday. I guess it was ok, kinda rushed, but they didnt really have a choice. I hope space picks it up.

m0rpheus 03-27-2008 12:15 PM

It did feel rushed, but understandably so. At least they got to wrap things up but still leave enough open that if another network picks them up they still have lots of story to tell.

dksuddeth 03-31-2008 03:28 PM

I've only seen the first 10 minutes of the series 'finale', but i'm amazed they even went there with the whole 'no more second amendment' thing.

I do hope they get this to another channel.
