Radio Plays

I've been working at my college station of late, to try and get original radio plays written, and on air. Who here enjoys radio play? what type?

Secondly I just wonder if anyone had any advise for writing one? it's proving to be a difficult experience.

listen to as many good radio dramas as you can.

The BBC have quite a few every week all available for download on their "listen again" service from their website.

Try Radio4 (the general speech radio chanel) and BBC7 (the specialist comedy and drama station).

I remember listening to the Star Wars trilogy as a radio play when I was a little kid, and I believe that was a BBC production. That was definitely enjoyable, but kind of a lost art, at least in the states.

radio plays have alot of potential--no need to do straightones necessarily.
go to www.ubu.com and do a search
you find stuff like this:

http://www.ubu.com/sound/beckett_bbc.html

from which you can hear a series of beckett radio plays--this is an option that has ben explored much more by german/eastern european radio than english lnaguage radio, for some reason. so check out the other treats that you find there as well.

nice to get a couple responses. I'm actually forming a writing team from the radio staff to get cracking on a serial (most of my plot ideas seem to be very much like gunsmoke or the shadow, or crimebusters). Also, as a warm-up for the voice acting, we might try some classic radio plays (possibly a Beckett) for practice.

whenever we get our first original aired and podcasted I'll post again.

The CBC does some good radio drama as well. You might comb through their acrchives at CBC.ca.

Go to the library or the bookstore and pick up some published radio plays. I also believe you can purchase the collected audio works of Orson Welles' work with the Mercury Theatre. They did a ton of amazing radio work in the 30s and 40s (their most famous work being War of the Worlds).

Shoestring is a good place to look from a college radio point of view.

They're on the U-San Francisco radio station.
