It's Oscar Time!

The 78th annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live from Hollywood on March 5. Oscar nominations were announced this week. Cast your vote for best picture.

Derwood 02-02-2006 06:11 AM

only one i've seen was Crash

Charlatan 02-02-2006 06:26 AM

Crash should win but it will go to Brokeback Mountain. Crash will get the screenplay award though.

ShaniFaye 02-02-2006 06:35 AM

I havent seen any of them at all and 2 of them I've never heard of lol

rhaevyn 02-02-2006 10:18 AM

I've only seen "Brokeback Mountain." I saw the end of "Crash," and that's it. Want to see the rest eventually. :)

Daoust 02-02-2006 10:30 AM

I haven't seen any of them either. Yet.

The only one I care to see is Good Night and Good Luck.

JustJess 02-02-2006 10:32 AM

So far, I've only seen two... but I'm not interested in all of them, either! I don't know if Brokeback Mountain will really win, there's often voter backlash against some movies for being "too" critically acclaimed. Crash was very well done, I thought... a little heavy-handed in promoting their ideas, but rather well done. I was pretty depressed after watching it, actually.
So yeah, I dunno.

Bacchanal 02-02-2006 10:41 AM

I've not had an opportunity to see any of them yet, though I want to see all of them at some point. I've heard good things about Crash, but I don't know anyone that's seen any of the others.

I wish I had an opinion...

Grancey 02-02-2006 01:40 PM

I've seen them all, and I liked each of them for very different reasons. They are all excellent films. Capote was my favorite.....PSH is a shoe-in for best actor. But I do think that Brokeback Mountain will win best picture. This film stays with you for a long time. I don't think Crash and Munich are best-picture worthy. They don't have the necessary edge to win. And I don't think the academy is ready to vote for films like Good Night, and Good Luck. Though I am eager for more films of this calibre.

maximusveritas 02-02-2006 03:50 PM

I've only seen Good Night, and Good Luck and I thought it was a great movie. I agree that Brokeback Mountain will probably win. I haven't seen it yet, but it does seem to be getting the best buzz.

Grasshopper Green 02-02-2006 05:21 PM

I've seen them all and they were all great films for different reasons...but I think Brokeback Mountain should win. It seems like the type that the Academy tends to favor as well.

By the way...was anyone else excited about nominations? I feel like such a geek because I get excited when the nominations come out

mystmarimatt 02-03-2006 10:48 AM

I've only seen "Crash," which I loved. But I have to go with "Brokeback Mountain," if only because of the hype. As the Oscars prove time, and time again, hype wins over anything else. Not that "Brokeback Mountain" isn't good, everyone I know who's seen it loved it, but...well, who knows.

trickyy 02-03-2006 11:26 AM

i've only seen crash
usually i only see movies after they've been on DVD for a month

nice to see that the nominees come from somewhat "independent" types of movies.

sapiens 02-03-2006 11:51 AM

I thought that Crash was alright. I thought it was a bit cartoony and I definitely don't think that it was Best Picture material. I think that Brokeback Mountain will win, but I don't think that it was a Best Picture either.

I think that there is a difference between "Best Picture" and what I would call "Best Film". "Best Pictures" tend to have a certain feel, like Forrest Gump. "Best Films" I consider to be the best film of a current year, like Pulp Fiction which lost Best Picture to Forrest Gump. "Best Pictures" tend to be studio films, or at least have a studio feel to them. They tend to be well-made, but don't push the envelope much. For me, "Best Films" are films that challenge both the average viewer and other film makers to think differently about the medium.

An interesting tidbit about the Best Picture Noms: None of them have made as much money as one of the Best Documentary Noms (March of the Penguins).

Unfortunately I have only seen one of the films nominated - Crash - so I can't offer a vote on this. I thought Crash was an excellent film with the only drawback being what I felt that some of the characters were a bit too stock for a film with such depth.

I'm hoping to see the others as well, but I doubt I will before the oscars are awarded.

chelsea_9 03-01-2006 04:59 PM

i've seen brokeback mountain, crash and bits of capote.

and i still think crash takes the cake. if brokeback mountain wins, it'll be out of sheer hype from the gay taboo the whole movie is based around. honestly, i thought it was an okay movie... but overall, not THAT good.

there were scenes in crash where it felt like my heart literally stopped. it's a powerful movie.

My thoughts exactly until I just saw the reverse happen(except the screenplay thing of course).
Go see Crash if you haven't!

msh58 03-05-2006 10:18 PM

i thought capote should have won.

Willravel 03-05-2006 10:23 PM

Seen all of them multiple times, best picture in my book is Good Night, and Good Luck. I've not been that impressed with a movie in quite some time.

Locobot 03-05-2006 11:26 PM

I seriously can't believe that Crash won best picture. Easily one of the worst films of the year.

Derwood 03-06-2006 02:22 AM

capote, GNAGL and Munich had 0 chance. It was always a two horse race.

And to say Crash was one of the worst films of the year.....well, I'll just say I strongly disagree and leave it at that

you actually expected a good choice out of the people who once voted Titanic picture of the year? :D

aberkok 03-06-2006 05:09 AM

Grrrr...I thought Crash was overrated. I thought the plot contrivances were too much and are what manipulated viewers into thinking it's message was strong. This review sums up well how I feel:

also, here's a previous rant from the "Crash" movie thread:

All of these films have one key element in common which make me really mad. That is emotional manipulation by the writers. It seems that to aid in the characters' downfall, the writer (or writers) had to implement a excessive series of coincidences. The results of these coincidences being either a character has something horrible happen to them, or that they have some kind of revelation. I don't doubt that these things happen in real life...just not so many times in quick succession. I swear there must have been at least a dozen such coincidences in Crash. SPOILER AHEAD: Spoiler: One of the above posters asked why Don Cheadle's character's brother (the nicer of the two carjackers) didn't tell Ryan Phillipe about the statue of St.Christopher in his pocket....well if he did, then he wouldn't have been shot, would he? If he was smart enough to know that he was in a place where "not a lot of brothers get picked up," then would he know not to reach into his pocket after being picked up hitchhiking? What else...the blank ammo bought by the Persians.....by the end of the film it starts getting really dumb....the Persian girl works at the hospital where Cheadle's brother's body is....the Health Office lady (who argues with Matt Dillon) gets her car rear-ended...the list goes on...

Fine. It's only a movie, but it makes me angry when people equate getting emotional with the quality of a film. When you react to a film like this you are not reacting to the message of the film, you are reacting to the cheap emotional manipulation wrought by the filmmaker.

I liked Magnolia, though. It didn't take a high moral ground and right from the start, it lets you know it's nothing but a surreal film (which is supposed to have funny moments). It doesn't take itself as seriously as the "terrible three."

Don Cheadle pwns, though...bring on Miles Davis!!

trickyy 03-06-2006 06:47 PM

it's true about crash, although that didn't bother me too much...it was still pretty interesting to watch

munich was far worse than crash in my opinion
it was not too exciting after hour 1
and whoever picked the music for munich should be shot...sheesh
