Omaha Beach (first shot at drawing with a tablet)

I finally bought a Wacom tablet last week and decided to take a look at some of my old pencil drawings and see if I could remake them on the pc. Here's my first try :

My hand really isn't steady enough for the detail work, and I suck at shading. Still, I'm pretty pleased with it for a first attempt. This is supposed to become the first panel of a six-page epic called "Nazi Robots Stole My Underpants".

a1t3r3g0 04-20-2003 09:57 AM

Not bad, not bad at all.

charliex 04-20-2003 11:39 AM

for the shading, say on the smoke, layer it up very very lightly, use the translucent mode of the brush and don't use black, use a translucent grey colour and then just go over it til you are happy, the lighter the grey the better, that way its harder to make a mistake

light direction is also really important, pick the direction it comes from, and go from there. draw a few cubes and spheres, get used to the flow of the light .

keep us posted too

Jack Ruby 04-20-2003 01:12 PM

Thanks, I'll have to look into that. I'll probably redo all of the colouring anyway.

muttt 04-20-2003 06:32 PM

I like it.

Ambition 04-20-2003 06:46 PM

As far as I know, tablet drawing difficult and I think that drawing is awesome. So for you're first time you're doing great. I really really like it, keep up the good work.

I am very impressed Jack Ruby... I don't know how easy it is to use a Wacom Tablet, but for the first time at anything that is impressive.

zaiaz 04-21-2003 05:54 AM

Nice comic style.

scope 04-21-2003 07:37 AM

Wow thats good. I remember when I bought my first tablet: its really hard to use and takes a while to get used to.

Take advantage of the pressure sensitivity so you can have really natural looking shading.

Quadraton 04-21-2003 08:31 AM

You know, I never thought about this before, but can someone tell me what those crossed-stick thingees are laying on the beach?

Cuball 04-21-2003 12:28 PM

i like it ! keep us posted with your other work if you wish

Dire Baka 04-21-2003 01:59 PM

This is really good for your first time on a wacom... Who am I kidding this is really good :)

I really want to buy a wacom tablet but I don't have the cash to spend on a size that I want... I was thinking about a 9x12

What size tablet do you have?

They're obstacles made out of scrap metal, and they were all over the beaches in Normandy. They were supposed to make it harder for tanks and troops to come ashore - but in fact they provided some useful cover to the allied invaders on D-Day.

Gortexfogg 04-21-2003 08:48 PM

That's a sweet picture. Not a lot of German resistance but still pretty cool.

SecretMethod70 04-21-2003 10:12 PM

hey, it's a lot better than I could possibly do so great job! It has a sort of comic feel to it.

trav 04-22-2003 01:44 AM

That is really nice, I just got a Wacom tablet...just gotta figure out how to use it. Did u do that in photoshop?

OMFUG 04-22-2003 04:22 AM

Very good.. I just ordered my Wacom yesterday. I went for the smaller one because a) I'm not rich (yet) and b) space is at a premium on my desk. I'm really looking forward to getting it, as I have a few comics I want to do and can't wait to use it for my album covers. How long did that take? Is it rough gettin used to the pen?

Jack Ruby 04-22-2003 09:44 AM

I first drew a rough draft in Painter Classic, the program that came with my tablet. Then did the inking and colouring in Photoshop. Took about an hour or two because of all the trial and error.

I would've liked to add whizzing bullet trails and explosions etc. but that would've just fucked up the picture. I need to get better before attempting complex, dynamic scenes like that.

The tablet is fucking great, and doesn't take all that long to get used to. I can recommend it to anyone.

OMFUG 04-22-2003 09:51 AM

Awesome. Which tablet do you use? I ordered the Intuos2. I'm like creaming myself waiting for it.

troit 04-22-2003 10:08 AM

Pretty impressive drawing for the first time out...

*shaking head with approval*

Peetster 04-22-2003 10:20 AM

Very nice! I like your work!

um..., is that a working title? ;-)

Jack Ruby 04-22-2003 08:43 PM

I used the Volito, which is like the budget version of the Intuos2 I think. It's a bit smaller and has 512 pressure levels instead of 1024 or something. Still, works for me.

GoldenOuroboros 04-23-2003 03:07 AM

I have to get me one of them too.. among the rest of the stuff I'm saving for.. Car or.. computer stuff..?

Cyd 04-23-2003 10:59 AM

THat looks pretty good... Is the Volito any good? Im still using the Graphire I, and Im fairly happy with it. Just wondering if there is much of a difference? ('cept size....)

It would be neat to have a little harder shading to give it more of a moody affect... Unless you were going for a more laid back feeling.

motdakasha 04-23-2003 07:42 PM

That is really awesome. Wanna give me some tips?
I have a tablet and all I've been using it for is a mouse and gaming! I feel evil because I'm wasting such a wonderful tool. I've only tried drawing with it in Photoshop three times, heh.

GreenCloud 04-25-2003 07:27 PM

i'd say that's great for a first try at a new medium. that title, ""Nazi Robots Stole My Underpants", makes me wonder where the story goes from there though...

Zello 04-26-2003 04:42 PM

You look like your doing a good job Jack Ruby. I've briefly used a wacom and it wasnt easy to use.

registrant2000 04-26-2003 05:01 PM

Nice job.. it almost has that cell shading feel to it. Looks real good.

Sun Tzu 04-27-2003 12:16 AM

NIce. Have you tried Illustrator? Is there a program that compensates for pressure variations?

Mr.Deflok 04-28-2003 01:07 AM

This is very nice! Kinda odd seeing such a horrific event so cartoony though ;)

Ditto...

Liked the Comic feel...

Friend has a small Wacom. I tried it. I was terrible at it. (But I cannot draw freehand either)

Lebell 05-03-2003 09:23 AM

That came out pretty well in a comic book way.

I'll be interesting in the finished work ;)

uber1 05-03-2003 10:31 PM

cool art, looking forward to the next in the series.
