Portrait
 

I promised to make a portrait of one of Loverboy's online friends from Turkey and I've just completed it. I haven't done one in years and it's obvious to me that I really really need to practise my drawing skills a lot more before I can make a perfect portrait. However I'm still pleased with it:

That thingy has a name but I'm not sure what :hmm:

it's quite common to wear the "thingy" in Turkey :D

That "thingy" is called a Keffiyeh although it might be spelled differently.

It looks great to me, except his nose kind of blends in with the rest of his face, unless his nose really does kind of blend in with the rest of his face. I too second flymans quote...
As I have no artistic ability at all, I think anyone who does stuff like this is just amazing!

It actually does in the original picture. The light from the torch or bonfire makes it look like he's got no nose at all :p

Hmm his nose is a bit more visible than I remember. Verdammt! I better make it more visible when I get home :)

Yeah I used to draw all the time when I was a kid. It was my main thing. I'd always be doodling in class...got really into it for a while. I'm fair at it. Got some stuff I'm proud of and/or was proud of at the time haha. I don't do it too much anymore and I don't know why. I guess I dunno what to draw haha. All pencils though...not good enough to use inks and paints just yet. Not enough practice. Got a drawer in my room full of a whole buncha my drawings, both old and fairly new. Last time I every really did some artwork was back when I was in highschool a couple a years ago in art class. Haven't really done much since then. While I was in there I did a self portrait of my profile that came out pretty good..then I had to paint it. I can't really paint though...I didn't have enough time to finish it...I never did...lack of experiance and the need for perfection...not a good combination. It's still in my drawer unfinished. I suppose one of these days I'll attempt to finish it..when I can get more paints.

I'm not very good though especially compared to other people I've seen...if I really try hard on something I can do it pretty good though. I'm a off and on guy sometimes I'm on..other times I can't do what I wanna do to save my life. Or maybe I just think I can't I dunno. I've always been my worst critic. Eh..

and by the way, after seeing the original pic, I think it was a very nice rendition. The nose did kind of blend in after all!

The nose blended in too much — even the turkey guy thought so too so I had to change it :)

Shame on you for not practicing – especially if you're rather good at it. If you've got a tight schedule like so many other people you simply have to make time!

Go find a scanner so we can see your work! NOOOW! You can buy some really cheap ones on the Internet so you've got no excuse what so ever for not purchasing one :p

And if you don't know what to draw then how about you start out by participating in the weekly activities here? :)

Hmm good idea. Yeah I've been really considering gettin a scanner. I'll have to look into that. My drawings are kinda weird though. When I was a kid all I'd draw were monsters n bugs...that and cartoony stuff haha :p

Hmm well I'll have to look into getting a scanner then. :) Umm technique & style...I never really put too much emphasis on those things I guess. I just drew..I was never taught technique really even though I'm sure I use many.

Very good job. Portraits are tough but drawing from a low quality pic like the one you had to work from...wow. Again, very good job!

Of course you use some sort of technique. Every artist has his particular technique and I'm curious to see yours :D

I like the way you shaded. The nose could use a little work(I can see from the original picture that is hard to get the light on that correct), but other than that, great work :thumbsup:

i think even just a super-faint outline of part of his nose on the left would be enough, I hate trying to give shape to objects using just shading...

what i really like about it is the proportions are all very accurate and the folds on his Keffiyeh (i think you had it right, flyman) are rendered well. The only departure from the actual photo is his eyes are spaced slightly differently, which gives him a look more like he's staring into space than looking straight out from the image. I think he looks more thoughtful that way.
