Weekly Activity 22/8-23/8 'Illustrate Your Favourite Part of the Jabberwocky'

Here it is

JABBERWOCKY

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)

excellent idea...only errrr I don't understand a word of that poem! What the heck is a Jabberwock?!

Edit: ok I found some pictures of a Jabberwock on google but I still don't get what it is. Is it a dragon or a mix of two fantasy beasts?

apeman 08-23-2004 07:01 AM

EDIT: now i look at the book, there's very little explanation ... there is a picture in my edition but i'm not going to spoil your fun by describing it :)

I guess the point of the exercise is that no-one knows what a Jabberwock looks like, so you can let your imagination have free reign?

All the imagery you require is in the poem. (no I just need to get my Vorpal pen to sketching before the Frumious Bandersnatch does me in...)

clavus 08-23-2004 09:02 AM

Nancy, et al. - Y'all are trying too hard. The poem is full of nonsense words that sound a bit like English words. The trick is to read the poem, conjure pictures in your mind and set pen to paper. There are no wrong answers and more than there are Jubjub birds.

Now I must go. I need to stand in uffish thought before I can start on this manxome project.

GoldenOuroboros 08-23-2004 02:31 PM

What! Jubjub birds don't exsist.. aww and I was so looking forward to a Jubjub roast too

As clavus said, what ever comes to your mind is the right answer :)

Slithy toves doing the "gyre and gimble"

clavus 08-23-2004 09:09 PM

Vermin - get out of my head! I was going to do that sort of thing, but with Brillig as sort of a lead singer with the slithy toves as background dancers.

Must...conceive...original...idea...ARG! MY HEAD!

GH - I really like the way the bird's head is cocked ever so slightly.
