I've been learning Softimage

Started learning how to use Softimage XSI for my masters, so heres some renders of things that I've been making
First of all, some chess pieces (without the knight, as I havnt managed to make a decent looking one yet) |

Last weekend I got bored of making simple things and decided to go for something a little more complex
So I made a TIE-Fighter |

Close-up on the cockpit and guns
I'm still only using simple texturing and didn't feel like making all the inside detail of the cockpit, hence the nice blue-grey viewports |

And a final render of the TIE from a slightly different angle, with a re-coloured Mars in the background
|
first one isn't too impressive, second one is very nice. good job!
|
I also had a go at rendering an animation of the TIE-Fighter, if you want to take a look you can get it here:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/d0nnchadh/tiefighter2.avi Its about 180kb and encoded in DivX 5 |

And now for something completely different*
*may not be 100% fact Made these today after I was showing someone how I did some of the modelling on the TIE This first render isn't quite the finished models, I did it so I could see what looked wrong, but it still turned out quite nice. Each of the three ships is made from a single polymesh cylinder, albeit with much modification to it. Top one is a Fighter class, lower left is a Bomber, and lower right Interceptor |

And last of all, the finished Bomber (or at least as finished as I feel I can take it at the minute)
|

Just finished with the texture on the Interceptor
|
i love the tie fighter next to the moon its an awesome job
|
your tie fighter looks pretty decent, the bottom planes look like an xwing if you left it on a light bulb. i don't know much about 3d imaging, but the lighting seems to be super plastic and fake looking. maybe a more subtle lighting and a nicer texture. but i don't know anything about how to do stuff like that. good start i would say.

Yeah I've mostly been concentrating on getting my modelling skills down, figuring out the best ways of lighting scenes and texturing models are next on the list.
I did only start learning the app 3 and a half weeks ago after all :) Funny you should mention an X-Wing as well, I had a crack at making one of them too, but it turned out crappy. Once I get hold of a reference model, ie some micro machines or die-cast stuff, I'm gonna give it another go. |
i used to have an xwing. my parents threw it away with all of the rest of my star wars stuff tho. such a sad day.
|
Wow, you're really up to a great start! Keep this up and you'll be really good at modelling. Do you know about 3dbuzz.com ? That's a really good place for learning about different 3d packages.

Very cool stuff. That is a cool way to create images.
