Paper Art - some truly inspiring work

In the past few years I have noticed that art using paper has become a noticeable tendency in the art world.

I came across an article on this and I had to share some of the images with you, because I feel that the simplicity of the ideas combined with patience and intricacy and some very talented artists has produced something that is definitely worth sharing:

Jetée 01-04-2010 01:58 PM

For the record, I don't when the rules changed in 'Tilted Creativity', if at all, but it was my assumption that this forum was solely reserved for our own original artistic endeavors; I'm not trying to say I know more than 'A' because I know of 'B', or even try to move this thread, but for expositions of other artists, I thought 'Found on the Net' or 'General Discussion' would be the appropriate venues, at least from my understanding from reading this forum's overview. Maybe it is an explanation of why I don't spend as much time here sharing, other than supplying short stories and/or indicative comments on others' works.

But besides my little confusion, here is something of interest that adds dimension to the topic, and is an elaboration of one of the names (and pieces) from above:

Jetée thank you for your contributions!

The rules changed a while back, you can have a read here. Basically the staff decided that it was ok to share artwork and discuss it even if it was not your own, as long as you credit the artist.

Here is another artist working with paper, mainly known for origami work, Haruki Nakamura.

I though this was interesting because it has movement:

This is such a cool thread! I did a few of the papercraft models a few years back from my own 3d models. It was pretty cool but the origami/paper art from the OP are crazy!!! And the paper heart is highly ingenious.

I had missed this thread, little_tippler. Thank you for it.

I have a special interest in paper as my work was included in a Smithsonian Institution traveling show entitled, Paper as Medium. This was decades ago, so it is very edifying to have this update. Paper is an awesome medium.

Appreciated,
Art

American artist and mathematician Robert The is the creator of these odd works of art made from books.

"Many of the books used were found in dumpsters and thrift store bins," and he says,
"they are lovingly vandalized back to life so they can assert themselves against the culture which turned them into debris."
Beginning the practice in 1991, the California-born artist's work has since been shown across New York and across the nation.

Post-It Art, Part II

Post-it Art : Productivity in Many Wonderful Colors

In the corporate world, climbing ladders and shaking hands run simultaneous. Between lunches, dinners, and meetings, something had to surface among the numbing UV lights of the office to keep everything in line. The Post-it Note, a small square with re-adhearable adhesive on the back, was one such answer. The three-inch bright yellow square was employed as a reminder, a note, or for organization... But some don't see it as only a productivity tool... they see it as a medium for colorful art.

Even on 3M's corporate site the Post-it Notes are sold with the slogan "So express yourself in color." Some creative people took that idea to heart and below are several examples of how people have used the sticky notes to create works of art.

"This Lightning Won’t Forge Itself" [.]
size: 7 1/4 x 10 3/8”
medium: cut paper on wood

Patrick’s illustrations and artwork are made entirely of cut-paper (and often wood) in his studio in Tokyo, Japan,
where he lives with his amazing wife and a very, very large collection of paper from all over the world.

Mixing bold whimsy with a subtle conceptual streak, his artwork combines influences from his life in Japan and his upbringing on a farm in New Jersey where he was surrounded by animals and the natural world. His interest in myths and fables drove him to study literature as an undergrad at Providence College, Rhode Island. All these elements come together to invent a unique mythology for the current world.

Patrick has an MFA in illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His work can be seen internationally in books, magazines, newspapers and more.

“Social Grooming” | cut-paper [.]

In his words, about his process and inspiration:
"Layer upon textural layer, my cut and torn paper artwork builds upwards to reveal an invisible world that exists intertwined with and inextricably linked to our own. Mythology, the supernatural, American pop culture and Japanese tradition mingle like tipsy guests at a cocktail party. I use my knife to shape each jagged piece, slicing away at illusion and giving form to a wondrous, dangerous and not-at-all-alien world of emotion, spirit and thought.

There is a primitive quality to paper that calls out to be touched. It is rough, textured, basic. I use this sensuality to evoke an immediate, gut-level response.

Su Blackwell and her focused medium:
"Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. I employ this delicate, accessible medium and use irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions.

It is the delicacy, the slight feeling of claustrophobia, as if these characters, the landscape have been trapped inside the book all this time and are now suddenly released. A number of the compositions have an urgency about them, the choices made for the cut-out people from the illustrations seem to lean towards people on their way somewhere, about to discover something, or perhaps escaping from something. And the landscapes speak of a bleak mystery, a rising, an awareness of the air."

For the children of impoverished nations, something as simple as a soccer ball can
help provide much needed relief from the harsh realities of life.

With that in mind, Unplug Design set out to craft a number of precisely-scored aid boxes
that, once emptied of their valuable contents, can be easily converted into several
different-sized game-ready balls.

intro
Quote:

Welcome to the chamber of paper and glue, Frankenstein Junior.
Ever considered to create life not only in a virtual world but also physically, so that you can have your Alter Ego right beside you?
Create a clone and experience the joy of a buddy that is never mean and always loyal and patient, and, most important of all, resembles you if you want him to. That is what makes him unique and proves your skill undeniably.
Put him behind a window and he will bring the joy forward to anyone on the street. It is really interesting to see the point where people realize that this is not a person watching them. Put him in your bed and he will bring the joy forward to the next one who sees him (including you, if you have a weak memory).

Paperless bags and boxes from MoMA

The packaging in all MoMA’s retail shops is made out of a revolutionary sustainable material called TerraSkin™ made by Design & Source Productions in New York.

TerraSkin™ is made from a combination of large amounts of mineral powder (>75%) with a small quantity (<25%) of non-toxic resin to create an environmentally friendly paper. TerraSkin(TM) has very similar characteristics to traditional paper with a tensile and tearing strength ratio of 1:1 - 2:1. It also has many eco-friendly characteristics. First, the production of TerraSkin(TM) requires no water, so the TerraSkin(TM) paper making process incurs no water pollutants. Second, as TerraSkin(TM) contains high proportions of inorganic mineral powder, when the end user is done with the TerraSkin(TM) product, the used paper will degrade when left out in nature for approximately three to nine months back into the mineral powder.

Most importantly, in producing TerraSkin(TM) , there are no trees involved. The paper is treeless.

Calvin and Hobbes pop up by ~WillziakDS on deviantART

author's comments:
This is a pop up scene based on Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson.
I was not really sure what to base my next pop up on, and when I reading some C&H, I realized there were so many great scenes to recreate in pop up form. I really like the stuff with the duplicator and transmogrification boxes, so I settled on this simple and charming little moment from the books.

The scene is set in Calvin's bedroom, but I left it at three figures and the rug because its clean and simple and the rug acts as a kind of spotlight on the scene. I think I'll need to do some more of these sometime because they are great fun to draw.

I've come across Lucia David's work before and it fits my aesthetic sense more than the crisply folded and clean works; I love worn paper, things that you can tell a human hand has worked them. Thanks also to Jetee, Koshi's Manga farms are great as is the video of Blackwell.

If you don't know her work yet, you might check out what would be considered the source to many of today's artists working in paper: Lotte Reiniger. I can't post links or images yet so I highly recommend doing a search to find her images and animations.

The Incredible Makeshift Floating Paper Boat

...

Even Captain Bligh did not have to suffer this. Cast adrift in an open boat, yes. Cast adrift in an open boat made of paper, no.

And all in the name of art.

To be fair to the German conceptual artist Frank Bolter, who has been making a name for himself in London this past week by floating his outsize origami on the Thames, I only had myself to blame.

Every schoolboy has spent hours trying to fold the perfect paper dart , a stiletto-nosed jet designed for speed or a lazy glider with broad wings for swooping and acrobatics.

Some of us moved on to boats, launching them in baths and basins or, occasionally. the local pond.

But yesterday my endeavours were on a different scale as I helped 40-year-old Frank to cart the three rolls of paper that would make his latest 18ft-long vessel from a hire van to the quayside in St Katherine Docks near Tower Bridge in London.

Together with a curious gaggle of other people, we rolled them out and watched him seal them together with a heat gun. We picked up loose ends and laboriously folded them as he stood on the dock armed with nothing more than a tiny scrap of paper with which he practised each fold before telling us what to do.

‘I have only done this eight times before and sometimes I forget,’ he said. ‘I have never let anyone else ride inside before.’

It’s hard to pin down novelist Jonathan Safran Foer. Just when you thought you had his meticulous prose and dietary politics figured out, he goes and drops a piece of interdisciplinary fiction on us all. Starting with his favorite book—Polish World War II-era author Bruno Schulz’s collection of short fiction called The Street of Crocodiles—Foer began slicing out sections of text. When all of the scraps of paper were cleared away, Foer had an entirely different story called Tree of Codes.

"Babushka" - (paper-)crafted by Yulia Brodskaya (Moscow).

artist's axiom:
Quote:

I believe that one of the main reasons I enjoy the paper craft, is due to my love of the material: paper. Although I've always had a special fascination for paper, it has taken me a while to find my own way of working with it; and then it took a little longer to find out that the technique I have been using so intensively is called quilling - it involves the use of strips of paper that can be rolled, shaped, and glued to the background.

This artwork is the first piece in the series of works which I consider a declaration of love to the material and the technique. It is also an attempt to raise a profile of this paper craft, which has been previously regarded with some disdain, and to bring this type of artwork on a new level in terms of its ability to convey meaning and emotions.

Initially, I was concerned about the limitations of the quilling technique and the material from which the work is constructed - paper & card - as it very much dictates what can and cannot be said within the boundaries of the chosen medium. However, this material limitation turned out to be a strength for me: there is the potential to contain thoughts and ideas in unique ways so that the medium can become a significant part of the message. Thus, after working with paper quilling for over three years I am at a point where I don't feel constrained by the technical challenges of the medium; I'm eager to keep experimenting, and this piece is just a beginning.

I t would be difficult to avoid mentioning one of the questions I am often being asked about my commercial paper works, which is, 'How long does it take'. Obviously this work took a lot longer than any of the commercial works I've done so far. In this laborious work the process has also become important: to my opinion, spending endless hours and days on a piece of work gives the suggestion of great care; not in vain the notion of 'care' is implied in the word 'to craft' itself.

Being a three dimensional object, the artwork offers multiple views depending on the angle of perception and the intensity and direction of lighting. These things can drastically change the visual experiences and emotional message of the same artwork. The rough snaps below should not only help to see some work in progress stages, but also demonstrate the versatility that can be achieved by playing with lighting and angles...
