One of the tough things about not having a job right out of graduation is keeping yourself motivated. (That and the constant retooling I'm doing to my portfolio and website is delaying yet another chance at an interview).:shakehead: I started this about 2 weeks ago, and have made a bit of progress with the rest of the alphabet, but lack of feedback is slowing the project. The concept is that each letter would represent a relationship, specifically the greetings/interactions we have with each other. I'm still undecided whether I want to add details to the hands (wrinkles, nails), or leave them as is. What do you all think?

kramus 02-17-2009 06:07 AM

Simpler is better. The font might be seen even smaller than the samples you've provided, and with reduction the details will become a problem for printers and for readers both.

For the relationship inspiration, what are you using? I would find it a real difficult challenge to come up with 26 variations and not have some overlap.

Love what you've done so far, BTW.

little_tippler 02-17-2009 02:56 PM

I love these. I like them without extra detail, they come off cleaner, and work better in terms of design. Would love to see the finished work!

Like the 2 above, I prefer them with less detail.
Will you do a type family, or use these as a display font?
Im quite interested in type.

evilbeefchan 02-18-2009 01:33 AM

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback! They will have to be display fonts, I'd lose all the detail if it ever dips below 72pts. The relationship thing is proving to be the hardest part, though. Letters like K and A are proving difficult to apply common gestures/ relationships, and Kramus nailed it regarding the overlap/repetition factor. I think the challenge in finding 26 different relationships will be the most rewarding part of the project. And rendering them so they're distinct enough (like differentiating lovers holding hands compared to mother & child holding hands). It's definitely going to be fun, though!

I say without.

These are very cool!

roachboy 02-18-2009 06:57 AM

interesting project.
personally, i like the C best.

sometimes it helps me to look at other stuff.
there's a ton of alphabet projects here:

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

some of them are really cool.

show more as the project unfolds please.

*registers interest

I like the way the extra hand details look on the "O" but I think the simpler version will be more aesthetically pleasing for the project as a whole.

I look forward to seeing more.

Anormalguy 02-19-2009 04:24 PM

I like 'em. Maybe avoid tumbs down if possible.

Reese 02-22-2009 03:28 PM

Those are great. I like the detailing, but really, The ones without look just as good and have more flexibility when it comes to resizing. I love the helping hands on the "I." I hope to see more of the set.

Hey everyone, here's some more progress. Thanks again for taking a look at these, I really appreciate it!

This one was posted on welovetypography.com a few days ago, totally unknown to me until I noticed my flickr page had over 50 views overnight. I still haven't gotten over it! =P

I'm kinda on the fence with this one, as I feel it doesn't read as quickly as the others. I may have to exaggerate the pose a little more, or go back and sketch some more ideas.

Titan_Uranus 07-09-2009 06:20 AM

Cool.

ngdawg 07-09-2009 03:47 PM

I like this concept. Could the A be a high5?

I was thinking the same thing about the A. High five seems to be the first thing to come to mind for me too. Of course, maybe going with the obvious is not the way to go too.

Hey guys, I've been seriously lacking on updates to this project, but I'm just 4 letters away from finishing it.

Excellent progress!
I want some of them as t-shirts.
I am suspicious of the letter "J" and want to break its fingers.
