NERD ART: Pixelated Paintings - Samus, Black Mage, Belmont

<font size=2>
I am a nerd. I paint. This is the result:
<br>
<p>

<p>
<b><i>Portrait of a Hero (16bit): Samus Aryan</i>. 2003. Acrylics on canvas, 24" x 12"</b>
<br>
From the long-lived Metroid series, Samus Aryan is perhaps the greatest heroine in the history of video games. Although her feminine form was masked by her suit (unless, of course, one used the infamous "JUSTIN BAILEY" code), she was, and continues to be, a valiant slayer of many a space-borne menace. More than just a video game character, she can be seen as a symbol of the future of female empowerment.

<p>
<b><i>Portrait of a Hero (8bit): Black Mage</i>. 2003. Acrylics on canvas, 24" x 16"</b>
<br>
From the most popular RPG series in existence, Black Mage is a character we see introduced in the very first "Final Fantasy" game. An unlikely presence amongst the "light warriors", Black Mage is a mysterious manifestation of dark power. We never see his true face, only glowing eyes from the inside of a shadow. Can something that seems so inherently evil truly be on the side of good?
<p>

<p>
<b><i>Portrait of a Hero (8bit): Trevor Belmont</i>. 2003. Acrylics on canvas, 30" x 24"</b>
<br>
Vampire slaying is very popular these days, but Trevor Belmont did it before it was so trendy. Father of the long-hailed Simon Belmont, Trevor was among the first to battle Dracula, as we saw in the prequel to the original "Castlevania" games, "Castlevania III". A hero in the most classic sense, Trevor is a man endowed with no super powers, simply a few meager weapons he uses to fend off an onslaught of demonic horrors. Striking a strong pose, Trevor is ever-diligent, a symbol of the staying power of virtue.

<p>
So what do you think? Is this cool from a nostaligic point of view? Is appropriating characters from a video game acceptable as art? Can video game characters have deep, artistic meaning?

hey, thats pretty cool. I always used to draw video game characters. Samus was drawn pretty fequently in the exact poses she did in Super Metroid. I always did away with the pixelated stuff though.

Maybe Zelda next?

3 cheers for the pixel...it simply rocks.

My current site is very low fi...with several hand done pixel animations. Good stuff!

Snoogans 06-22-2003 12:45 PM

Great work. Pixels rule!

OMFUG 06-23-2003 04:16 AM

Dude, that fuggin rox all kinds of worlds... you know you shoudl think about continuing this line of art... It has serious potential to make a splash on the scene. It says a lot about what the boundries of "high" art are and speaks to the condition of the outsider as mainstream. Keep us posted on further stuff liek this... maybe an "all your base" painting? :)

Very cool paintings. I've always enjoyed "pixel art" and to see it 'transcend the medium' is very cool. Please post more if you make it.

That's incredible stuff! That black mage is the best. I've never seen any art like this before and it looks great. Keep it up.

MacGnG 07-01-2003 11:27 PM

:p funny that you include 8/16 bit lol

interesting, maybe in a collectable store or similar would they be more appreciated than just as art

analinguist 07-03-2003 09:51 PM

the middle one is the nicest.. you should make the colors very solid and distinguishable.

guypunkr 07-07-2003 08:52 PM

I never realized the beauty in pixels. Your use of them makes me appreciate the implementation of less pixelized images for games... And yet miss them for the simplistic majesty they hold...

Very well done, on all levels.

Those are great, it took me a second to actually realise that they weren't pixels.

little limey 07-19-2003 06:36 PM

yea, i would have to agree with OMFUG up there and say that this kind of art could make a "splash." a good splash mind you. I think you would have to do something with them though besides just having them there by themselves... well, it all depends on what you're trying to get across or what you feel about your paintings. I guess if you do just leave them plain you will connect more with people who will get a nastalgic feeling form them.

Good job. I really like the last one with the red movement in the background. It is a nice contrast to the focus of the pic.

I sold the painting of Samus on eBay a while ago. I don't have any more sales going on right now, but I may in the future. You can always check <a href="http://www.softcom.net/users/randlystan/">my site</a> to see if I'm selling anything at the moment.
