Do girls read in the bathroom?

Background: I got my boyfriend a subscription to popular science for his birthday, and he was happy that he'd now have bathroom reading material. Somehow it came up in conversation that girls read in the bathroom too, neither I my roomates or any girl I know keeps reading material in the bathroom. So i was wondering about all of you. Readers or All Business.

maleficent 12-17-2004 05:18 PM

In my bathroom, I have a small bookshelf, over the toilet. On said bookshelf, I have The Ladies Bathroom Reader, 2 editions of Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader, and about 4 editions of Randy Cassingham's This is True books. plus there are a few other books of that story.

I keep reading material in the bathroom, let's just say I am a multi-tasker, it's a good place to keep up with trivial stuff.

ShaniFaye 12-17-2004 05:32 PM

It is physically impossible for me to go to the bathroom if I dont have a book in my hand

and just for the record no other woman in my entire family can either

*Nikki* 12-17-2004 06:09 PM

I for one am always in to much of a hurry to read, least of all in the bathroom.

The bathroom is not at all a place of leasure for me. *sigh*

jaded 12-17-2004 07:42 PM

Me, always reading. Shani put it well, can\'t go without something to read.

snowy 12-17-2004 07:56 PM

I read. I keep a stack of magazines on the back of the toilet in case I'm not in the middle of reading something else at the moment.

ColonelSpecial 12-17-2004 10:48 PM

It is only because of the special time I spend reading in the bathroom that I am able to win so often at Trivial Pursuit. :) To those women who don't read while in the can: start! It is great :)

gremlinx8 12-17-2004 10:57 PM

The bathroom is just such a boring room, having something to read makes it so much better.

Supple Cow 12-18-2004 01:12 AM

I never used to read in there, but since college has made my leisure reading time much less leisurely, I find myself taking my pleasure books into the can with me every now and then. Last year, I kept a gameboy with tetris in the bathroom. My suitemates sure enjoyed that. This year, the bathroom's so small that there's no safe place to put the darn thing without risking a dip in the toilet, but I'm probably better off... I would sometimes forget to do my business and sit in there playing for way too long.

pinkie 12-18-2004 10:26 AM

I don't spend that much time on the pot. Only guys do that, I thought.

(hey, that rhymed) :D

CinnamonGirl 12-18-2004 10:32 AM

I don't keep things in there to read, but if crackprogram's left a magazine (or ten), I'll pick it up and browse through.

sapphire 12-18-2004 11:08 AM

From time to time I'll grab a magazine but I can't just sit there and read. My exboyfriend always had to take something with him to read and he would be in there for ever. I never understood that.

Hash_Browns 12-18-2004 11:49 AM

I keep my parenting mags in the bathroom, they don't get tore up and put all over the house, and I love to read in the bathroom, so they get done together...

If I am at someone else's house and I have to 'take care of business', I will get so desperate as to pick up a shampoo bottle and read the description or something to make the time go by faster!

bernadette 12-18-2004 12:23 PM

typically i am quick like a ninja, but i will grab the front section of the newspaper & at least get through the headlines! ;)

my house & garden magazine is a good back up plan if i've already done the newspaper.

ahahahahha so Im not the ONLY one that does that hehehehe

My grandmother always kept readers digest in her bathroom....Being able to read them there was always one of my favorite parts of going to visit her

Dezeba 12-18-2004 07:16 PM

I've never read in the bathroom. I'd rather get in and get out. But I bet that once I have children I'll be more then happy to have some quite reading time in the bathroom!

Nancy 12-19-2004 01:40 AM

hahah no I never read in the bathroom. I haven't got time for that.

My Dad keeps MAD mag. in the bottom drawer of the bathroom cabinet, that's how it all got started ;) It is still there and I still read whenever I am over!

Jonsgirl 12-19-2004 08:09 AM

I read everything. If I don't have a book, I'll read a magazine, if I don't have one, I've even been known to read the backs of the shampoo bottles and such.

little_tippler 12-21-2004 05:38 AM

I enjoy my time in the bathroom and I like to read an ocasional magazine on the toilet or in the tub. Why not? It's very relaxing lol

sillygirl 12-21-2004 10:08 AM

I don't really read a lot... my hunny gets Maxim, and one day I picked it up and started flipping through it. *shhhh don't tell him that* and now when there's one in the bathroom I'll read it. Also a few car mags. Damn.... I'm turning into a guy!! *goes and buys a Ladies Home Journal*

RMMsGirl 12-21-2004 12:03 PM

I have to say I am always reading while in there.. whether it be a book, magazine, shampoo bottle or the tube of toothpaste.

Averett 12-21-2004 12:16 PM

I don't. I do what I have to do and get out of there. Who wants to sit on that cold, hard seat longer than is necessary?

ShaniFaye 12-21-2004 12:20 PM

I have one of those nice cushy toilet seats....very comfy

so my answer Averett is ME I want to sit there longer than necessary

Averett 12-21-2004 12:22 PM

Cushion seats?!? They've always reminded me of old people

ShaniFaye 12-21-2004 12:25 PM

hey now....all my toilets have always had them

Sugar&Spice 12-21-2004 01:44 PM

Wow, I am amazed at how many of you ladies always read on the toilet. Maybe I'll have to give it a try and see what I have been missing.

maleficent 12-21-2004 02:03 PM

They wouldn't have made The Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Series if it weren't intended for people to read in the bathroom.... That book woudl look pretty silly in the living room, and peoplemight get confused... :)

Start slow-- take a book into a bubble bath with you... you will love it... :D

ngdawg 12-21-2004 02:53 PM

I always thought it was a guy thing! No woman I know reads on the toilet!! hmmmm..

Ananas 12-21-2004 08:09 PM

I read all the time in the bathroom, rarely go without something to read.

Soft, cushy seats are the way to go.

The only problem is sometimes I stay on the seat so long that my legs/feet go numb.

little_tippler 12-22-2004 06:57 AM

cushion seats? that's really strange...how do you clean those, do they attach with velcro or something? sorry, getting off subject heh. I must be weird because I find it quite comfortable enough on the hard toilet seat...lol

Try a cheapie magazine at first, and only read cheap paperbacks in the tub. I can't imagine taking a bath without reading. I do it all the time.

Amethyst 12-22-2004 11:37 AM

I try to spend as little time in the bathroom as I have to so No, I don't read in the bathroom. It's in and out for me.

Me too.. very relaxing

Trisk 12-28-2004 02:24 PM

I don't always bring something in the bathroom with me, but sometimes you just get the feeling that it's going to take a while...

Redgirl 12-29-2004 12:43 PM

When I get the urge I've been known to run all over the house looking for something new to read while in the bathroom!

We have a magazine rack right by the toilet so if I'm not reading a book ATM I can grab something to flip thru. I don't know why but it's so much easier to concentrate on stuff while you're in there. Sensory deprivation or something. I usually end up sitting there until my legs go numb, too. Guess I need to get an old lady cushioned seat!

onodrim 12-29-2004 01:50 PM

I've never read anything in the bathroom before, and I've never had the urge too. *shrug* For me, I just want to go in there, do what I need to do, and get out.

xxSquirtxx 12-29-2004 08:48 PM

Usually "all business" for me. Very rarely will I read.

Acetylene 12-30-2004 09:19 PM

bodily wastes are unpleasant by nature and I would prefer comic-book distraction.

bad jane 12-31-2004 02:14 PM

my grandfather got me into bathroom reading. i'd go to visit and there was always a stack of playboys by the toilet. when i was little i just looked at the pictures, but as i got older i really did enjoy the articles!

i'm a reader by nature. i almost always have a book or a mag of some sort with me. i don't take a book into the bathroom if i'm visiting someone else (excluding family and sig. other) but i keep several stashed in mine. reader's digest and time are my current favorites.

fallsauce 02-08-2005 06:23 PM

I love Popular Science... And yes, I do read in the bathroom, it's too boring otherwise. But I don't keep stuff in there, I'm too scared the steam and moisture will damage it.
I usually read magazine in there, books are too long for the occasion.

02-08-2005 06:33 PM

I always take something with me. Generally its whatever text book Im reading at the time. My roommate just reads the bottles in there. She's said that reading french helps her out if she needs it *shrug* crazy....

Manuel Hong 02-08-2005 06:59 PM

hee hee, I've been desperate enough to read the bottles and tubes!! Now I put the new mail (like catalogues and local newspapers) in there to thumb through before I get to my paperwork. Taking a bath is by far the best way to catch up on reading though!!

la petite moi 02-08-2005 07:25 PM

I read the scrawlings on the stall walls/doors.

ironmaiden7o7 02-08-2005 08:38 PM

I don't read in the bathroom atall, I don't think I've ever done that. Does reading scribbles off of public bathroom count? :-) I don't if this helps, but I often speak on the phone in the bathroom, I find it private. :-)

KinkyKiwi 02-09-2005 12:40 PM

lol, i hide in teh bathroom..and read while sitting on the counter..usually raunchy novels.

nspanky34 02-09-2005 12:45 PM

I read my SO's Maxim when I'm takin care of business :p

qtpye4u84 02-09-2005 10:35 PM

I don't spend enough time in the bath room to read anything. When I go I go fast. If I read for the amount of time it took me to get ready I would be able to read in there.
So weird how some ppl almost take an hour to go #2 and then theres ppl like me the same amount of time to go pee as to go #2 probably because I only go 2 a week.

superredhead 02-10-2005 09:35 AM

my family really wasn't the "reading in the bathroom type", so as a kid i would read the backs of shampoo bottles, toothpaste tubes, and whatever else was within arms reach. i soon realized that i had memorized all the ingredients, so i started taking a newsweek or other various current event mags with me. i found that i could keep up on my politics and world events a lot better after that.

raeanna74 02-10-2005 11:38 AM

Growing up if you weren't going to the bathroom, eating or sick you were fair game for whatever chore my Mom (or Dad) happened to come up with at the moment. They were coming up with chores frequently and I don't mean the kind of "Come pick up your mess." kind of chore. I mean the "Go bring in some wood." or "Come dust the house." It was my retreat. Now I sit and read cause when the 4 yr old come I can say "Moma's going potty, go play until I'm done." Only place I get peace and quiet TO read.

Edit:typo

Melka 02-11-2005 10:05 PM

I do so read in the bathroom! Usually only when I'm already reading something and then have to go to the bathroom, then just take it in with me. No place to keep any reading material in our small bathroom.

mew 02-12-2005 10:40 PM

Oo~ its a close race.
Im all business..Get in get out. My butt gets too cold if I stay too long.

maleficent 06-13-2005 10:15 AM

Today's Pearls Before Swine comic just made me laugh...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...0790050613.gif

guess some folks do get carried away with bathroom reading...

Pip 06-13-2005 02:19 PM

Now that is a bathroom to die for! I spread my books all over the house, quite a few end up in the bathroom.

I actually gasped when I read that.

Anyone who takes one of my comic books into the bathroom with her is taking her life into her hands.

No one in this home reads in the bathroom. All three of us are business only ladies.

And we have wooden seats in all of our bathrooms. I find them more comfortable than the cushioned ones, which just don't feel right for some reason.

ShaniFaye 06-13-2005 03:42 PM

one of my dreams in life is to have my bookcase in the bathroom

diddagirl 06-13-2005 04:14 PM

I am a definite reader. If their is no magazine or book around, then i turn to reading such things as shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is always something interesting written on those that you never knew.... :)

eMOTIONal20 06-13-2005 05:41 PM

I don't think I'm in there long enough to read... hmmm

I usually just end up thinking about something completely random and of no relevance to what I'm doing. I ponder life while I sit on the toilet. *shrug*

I do read while I take a bath though. Since I like being in the tub for a little while, it make sense to me to have something to do. Sometimes, though, those random thoughts get in the way while I am actually trying to read.

bathroom = think tank teehee

Seeker 06-14-2005 04:52 AM

Bathroom breaks are like lunches.. just a function of life that I can't wait to be finished with so I can get back to whatever it was that I was doing.

Or is that somewhere between the five things I was doing... :hmm:

ChrystalRainne 06-14-2005 05:27 AM

i read in the bathroom every once in a while, mostly when i am relaxing in a nice hot bubble bath,

getwonk'd 06-14-2005 07:34 AM

I have four kids plus I babysit during the day plus our house is the neighborhood hang out. Its not unusual to have between 15 or 20 kids at our house at one time. The bathroom is the only room I can go in and lock the door for a few minutes. I read anything I can get my hands on at that time.

Meditrina 06-14-2005 08:15 AM

On the occasions that I do read in the bathroom, it is usually the many catalogs that I get in the mail.

hunnychile 06-14-2005 04:40 PM

Oh please, c'mon....lots of women read in there All the Time. - Most just don't want to discuss stuff they do in there. Our CFO takes her newspaper in there at work. I find that sort of humorous actually.

But guys that bug us when we are in there, should be shot (jk!)
