I had this thought today as I was sitting on my couch reading a book. What do you ladies think about maybe starting a book club? We would have to see who was interested and then every month we could take turns picking a book. We would all read it (by a certain date that we all decide on) and then discuss it. What do you all think? Should we include the guys or just start with us?

Eh, just start with us for right now :) Then we could pic and Oprah's Book Club book and there would be no whining :)

yay, i've been meaning to start up my reading again (i used to be fairly avid) but it's died off since i've moved and blah blah blah, anyway, i'd be game, i just checked out a library card last week, yay fallenangel! so let's giver a whirl!

So, how about if we wait till what do you think monday and see who else wants to join and then pick a book monday night or should we wait a little longer?

I'm into it....I used to always have my nose in a book, but have laxed a bit as I have been busy. but if i had the motivation, for sure!!! :)

I agree with you on that one to. I thought maybe each one of us would randomly choose a book. We could pick from some of her old selections. I know Kelly Ripa had one also. We could choose from hers. I don't know just keep the ideas coming. Because I think it is a great idea I hope it happens.

I've done this once before, and it dropped off due to lack of interest. What we did -- and this is merely a suggestion.

Submit a book suggestion, either what you're reading now, or what you want to read. Get a little synopsis of the book (amazon has the publisher's weekly synopsis which are awesome) and start a poll with the suggestions. most number of votes wins.

Ya just might want to get an idea of what some folks like - and how "high brow" people want to get. Oprah's books tend to be a little more - ummm -- oh what's the word -- smarter reading - Kelly's book club is summer beach reading trash -- which are just such fun to read - -and generally read fast.

This is a great idea. I read all the time, but mostly it's trash. I would like some motivation to read something a little more thought provoking.

Count me in; but personally don't want to do a poll, etc. I think that Amethyst (being the originator of this idea) should name the first book. We can read it if we want and if not, no loss. Once she is done reading, or as she is reading, she starts a thread on it and we add on. From there, one of the contributers names the next book and the cycle continues. That way it stays low key and we won't feel pressure to read from month to month if something comes up.

(This worked for me in a book club I formed in town -- which petered out when I moved. Speaking of, I should get it going again if this doesn't work.)

I hate picking things my husband and I give each other a list of three places to eat and then we get to choose one of them. So, this is going to be hard for me. I'm looking at two books right now.

Well I'm in :) Right now I'm reading Empire Falls, but I could set that aside for the TFP Book Club...

I like just about anything. Those 'chick lit' books are always fun. Easy to read girl-meets-boy type stuff.

Couple of suggestions along the chick lit - -though calling these lit would be a strectch. :)

Sophie Kinsella wrote a series of books - the Shopaholic Series -- 3 books with the same title character and her trials and tribulations. The books are funny, great characters, you won't grow any brain cells reading them, but you won't lose any either. You will, however, be entertained. She just came out with a new one, thats on my night stand at home. Can You Keep A Secret, that I have heard a lot of good things about.

I think I've read all of those Shopaholic books. They were good, that's along the lines of what I like. Can read em in 2 days.

Relax about it. It's only one book. Lately, at the book store, I've been asking the clerks to tell me what to read. Just pick a book for me, I don't care what it is, it's only a book. No one is gonna slap you silly if you pick a bad one, and we'll be happy campers if you pick a good one.
Name the book. Then start a new thread when you're done or almost close to done. I'd probably guess about 2 weeks but some folks read faster than others.

anything. I used to think I didn't like buigraphies, til Mary, Called Magdalene was suggested for me. I've changed my mind about them

i'll give it a shot in the later summer months as i want to get into reading, but i have school and i have enough reading when i'm in class. i'll keep an eye out though for when i'm done of my class. good idea!

I'm in. Just give me plenty of time to read it. I used to read one of those romance novels types of books in an afternoon. The larger classics like "Tale of Two Cities" took about a month and the book "Count of Monte Christo" too me all summer (I think I remember it was something like 4,000 pages).

Now that I have kids though it all depends on how busy things get. Summer will be less kid crazy for me hopefully though. I'm not into mystery a lot but I go through phases of what I like to read.

My suggestion for a future book is "The Black Tulip" It's written by the same author as "The Three Musketeers", "Man in the Iron Mask" and "Count of Monte Christo". "The Black Tulip" though is much shorter and a fairly light read. It's a basic romance story but with the suspense of his other stories. If I remember right it didn't even take me a week to read the last time. That was 10 years ago though.

Some other possibilities are some of the new Caldicott Award books. Yes they are written for upper elementary students but there's often a lot of more subtile parts to the stories that we would catch that a 7th grader wouldn't. For example "The Giver". There's a lot to discuss there including issues of medications for mood alteration and euthanasia. It all depends on what kinds of discussions you are looking for.

I'm definitely interested. I like to read in my spare time so this would be perfect. Usually I read the trashy romance novels :) and I'd love to branch out a bit.

Okay I have decided on a book.The Virgin Suicides
by Jeffrey Eugenides (Author). Here is the review:

Eugenides's tantalizing, macabre first novel begins with a suicide, the first of the five bizarre deaths of the teenage daughters in the Lisbon family; the rest of the work, set in the author's native Michigan in the early 1970s, is a backward-looking quest as the male narrator and his nosy, horny pals describe how they strove to understand the odd clan of this first chapter, which appeared in the Paris Review , where it won the 1991 Aga Khan Prize for fiction. The sensationalism of the subject matter (based loosely on a factual account) may be off-putting to some readers, but Eugenides's voice is so fresh and compelling, his powers of observation so startling and acute, that most will be mesmerized. The title derives from a song by the fictional rock band Cruel Crux, a favorite of the Lisbon daughter Lux--who, unlike her sisters Therese, Mary, Bonnie and Cecilia, is anything but a virgin by the tale's end. Her mother forces Lux to burn the album along with others she considers dangerously provocative. Mr. Lisbon, a mild-mannered high school math teacher, is driven to resign by parents who believe his control of their children may be as deficient as his control of his own brood. Eugenides risks sounding sophomoric in his attempt to convey the immaturity of high-school boys; while initially somewhat discomfiting, the narrator's voice (representing the collective memories of the group) acquires the ring of authenticity. The author is equally convincing when he describes the older locals' reactions to the suicide attempts. Under the narrator's goofy, posturing banter are some hard truths: mortality is a fact of life; teenage girls are more attracted to brawn than to brains (contrary to the testimony of the narrator's male relatives). Same here. How long do we have to read? It doesn't look all that long. I just got myself a well worn copy from my library today.

This will get me back to the library. I've neglected it since my daughter couldn't keep quiet. Well today I had my daughter and another almos 3 yr old. They were both very good and quiet. Maybe I can do this.

I'm gonna get started soon. - Just so you know I won't be on here as much since I have to use my time on here to read it. ;) I'll be back more often though when I'm done.

I don't know if anyone is interested but last night I was watching the lifetimenetwork and THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is on the lifetime network May 28 at 9 pm et/pt. I don't know that I will watch it because I want to finish the book first, but who knows.

K, this copy of the book is 249 pages, and i'm on page 106, i can't put it down, i really like it so far.... I still have some hesitations, but i'll go into that further along. All i know is it's told from a different perspective than i've read from in a long while. I don't think i'll be finished by the time that it's on TV, and if i were to watch it, i'd want to finish the book first. Then it won't ruin the pictures i've painted in my mind thus far.

I'm a freaking machine... i just plowed through the rest of it, and i'm finished... anyone else? I don't want to start discussing yet because i'm not sure where everyone else is at.

Christ, fallenangle, I haven't even gotten the book yet and you're already done!! Man, have I got some catching up to do. By the time we discuss this, you will have forgotten what happened in it!!

It's the first time i picked up a book in a while, and i was eager /me *blushes* That's ok, i'm letting my roommate read it so i'll be updated frequently.

I'm about half way through. I'm sure I'll be finished by Monday as we have a couple hour drive ahead of us today - meaning relatively uninterrupted reading time. :D

I want to join, but I'm a fast reader.. I'll read 100 pages in 4-6h.

I adore reading, but it makes me sleepy, so I can't do it when I'm too tired or I won't get far ;)

You ladies are amazing: between traveling for the 3 day weekend, raising kids, Lebell moving in, dealing with the ex, and the end of the school year, I've had no time to even find it. Hopefully tonight I can shop while the girls are at the gym. It sounds like a must read book!

The library keeps teasing me. The computer says they have it, but it's not on the shelf. They claim it's in transit from another library. It's all a big conspiracy I'm sure... :hmm:

I started last nite, and must say I can tell I'm gonna love it..definitely my kinda book.

Just don't know how much reading time I will have over the next few days, jsut found out this morning that we're having a guest visit this weekend...and in the meantime, will need to clean house and such.

We should start up a new thread about the book itself. So those of us who are reading/have read it can go there to talk about whats going on.

I was going to wait till the weekend because that is when we told everyone to be finished with the book.
