There's been a lot of talk on the boards lately about body image, and it seems to me that a whole lot of people are down on themselves, in a lot of ways. I think there's plenty of drive to better oneself in our society, but not nearly enough encouragement to love yourself exactly as you are, which a friend of mine says is "the only perfection." So...share with us 10 things you like about yourself! (I'm posting this in the Ladies Lounge because it seems that women in particular are prone to feeling very negative about themselves, particularly physically).

I'll start:

This is a GREAT exercise. Even the Bible says "love your neighbor as yourself" not rather than yourself! Self love and recognition is important. Thank you for starting this strand.

Ten things sounds easy but may not be....let's give it a go.....

9) I'm very strong willed and independent but still retain the ability to just let someone else lead.

10 things? lol,I'm hard pressed to think of even three!

They develop cures for all sorts of things,if they could come up with a cure for always feeeling like you are worthless,I'd buy it in a milllisecond. I cannot list the various feel good about yourself methods I've tried over the years but none of em seem to over come the tape that plays in my head telling me that I've never measured up and never will.

I know the feeling, hon, and let me tell you a little secret I've learned:

that little voice in your head, the one that plays on the tape and tells you you don't measure up, it doesn't know what the fuck it's talking about and it is NOT YOUR FRIEND!! Its job is to keep you small and powerless and safe from life with all its pitfalls and hurts. That's why it adds the "and you never will" part - It says "Why even bother? You could never do all those amazing things you're thinking about doing. You don't really want to chase those dreams - you might get hurt! Things are good enough right here. Let's just sit here in the dark and stay safe till we die. There, that's a good girl. Don't you listen to all those other voices telling you how wonderful you are! They don't know you like I know you - they want you to go try new things, they're just flattering you so you'll go out and chase your dreams. I'm your only real friend." The voice is in no way connected with reality.

If you are really, truly feeling worthless all the time it might be worth trying therapy, or trying therapy again if you've already trod that path.

If you ignore the tape, if you just listen to your true self, the one that loves you exactly as you are (you might have to listen hard to hear it), can you hear the good things about yourself?

oo, excellent idea... i think we need this. this'll be tricky...

1. i'm pretty good at figuring tech things out intuitively
2. i'm good at telling people off that need it, especially if they're doing something to someone else

5. once i figure out a camera, i can take some pretty nice pictures.

7. i practiced and can now move my hips quite well, in dancing and otherwise..

It's reassuring to me that it didn't take me long to think of those and I am sure I would be able to think of more.

This was very easy for me ~ I could do 10 more with no problems, without the physical attributes, which I would list as well if I thought they were more important than what I listed here. And no, I don't think that it means I'm egotistic ~ just have lived 43 years and had time to learn to appreciate myself ;) .

That wasn't too bad. I could come up with some more too. Wow, I like this thread a lot. Once I started thinking about it, it was a really great feeling to know those things about myself. All too often I hear that voice. Especially lately. Thanks!

I love lists. I'm terminally unorganized, but I love making the lists about things that matter.

1. I'm intelligent.
2. I enjoy arts of all kinds and genres.
3. I'm able to find happiness in little tiny things, when I look for it.
4. I love someone with my whole heart and don't hide it any more, from anyone.
5. I'm compassionate when it is needed.
6. I'm really good at what I do for a living... for now. And when I'm not, I'll find something new.

1. I'm very loyal, especially to my family. Nobody messes with da family.
2. I'm stubborn. It keeps me working until I get it done/figure it out. Hubby says he's never met a more stubborn woman.

5. I like that I'm sticking with the exercising and losing weight.

Man, this is hard.

6. My eyes. They aren't just one color, but range from green to golden.
7. My reading comprehension. I didn't know until just recently how many people have trouble with this and how lucky I am.

Well, it took me at least 20 minutes......but it does make me feel good that I found ten.

This is very therapeutic. I had to do this when I was in therapy a few years ago. However, I couldn't mention physical things because those could change...although behaviors and attitudes can be modified too I suppose. A few years ago I couldn't think of one good thing about myself. I'm proud that I've come this far that I can list 10. :)

1) I'm a quick learner and love to learn things.
2) I'm a hard worker and give 100% to things I care about
3) I'm genuine and don't lie about my feelings
4) I'm easy to get along with
5) I'm adaptable..I am able to read people and fit in easily
6) I can talk to anyone
7) I have a lot of motivation
8) I'm organized
9) I'm happy with myself although it's taken along time to be this way
10) I love challenges and seek them out to keep life interesting

There are things I like physically about myself that I'm proud of, like toning and finally getting back in shape. My favorite feature are my eyes.

Starting with the physical...
1. I like my eyebrows. They're blond and are naturally shaped and thin - I never have to pluck them.
2. I like having green eyes.
3. I am proud of my nails because I used to bite them til they bled. :|
4. I like the scar on my lip. And that it gives me an excuse to point out the really long faint scar on my face and how my mom put my face back together with a butterfly bandage and nothing else and look what a good job she did!
Onto other stuff...
5. I like my low voice.
6. I enjoy knowing another language, even if millions in the world also speak Spanish... that just means I have that many more people I can talk to. :)
7. I'm happy that I got an A in my Chem lab without having taken the lecture yet... equating to general pleased-ness about my grades since I went back to school.
8. I am opinionated about almost everything, but I think I usually state my opinions without being hurtful.
9. I really can learn anything, and I love knowing why. Even if my explanations are too technical to bother listening to sometimes!
10. I'm really proud of how well I (and Q) trained our cats, and how well I generally get along with animals, children, and people of all types and backgrounds and ages and ... :)

That wasn't nearly as difficult as it would have been two years ago. There are plenty of things on the list that I don't like, but you can't focus on just one side... that would be too unbalanced, and I AM a Libra, after all... :lol:

I agree, this is a great revival. I went back and read the whole thread.
With two sisters and two brothers, I come from a whole family of good lookers, (My Dad's still Hollywood handsome at age 60, Mom's still a size 6 at age 55) so physically I've always felt good about myself. Mostly that's just "the luck of the draw" in getting good genes. I am grateful for that, but not proud---since I had nothing to do with it. I do wish I wasn't so damn short. I'll put the physical first.

1. I am blonde and petite. I have large (but not huge) breasts, lean legs, and a skinny little butt. Hello out there, that makes me blessed, not stupid.

8. I am spiritually, emotionally, and financially strong.

Like fredweena, I love lists, so just for balance I also came up with a list of ten areas where I could use a little work, or where some change might be in order. Putting those in here would be hijacking this thread, so I'll start a new one sometime.

1. I like sex. A lot. It is the gift that keeps on giving.

4. I have an explanatory metaphor for every situation. It's even helpful to other people most of the time. (It's always helpful to me.)

Looking back over these, they seem all out of order... but this is the order in which I thought of them. Number 10 is my favorite. It is the other gift that keeps on giving.

After reading all of these, I see a pattern of a couple characteristics I see consistantly. The biggest (and best-est!) I see is the fact that all of us ladies like that we are intellegent! Personally, it is relieving to see this because it seems that woman intentionally act/ choose to be otherwise for reasons of getting ahead or whatever other reasons.

ok, so i too, like many other women, have had a lot of self image problems and still do...which is why i think this is an awesome exercise and wana start off by saying thanks to lurkette :)

I'll start off by saying what i usually get from people...

1. "My child has never taken to someone so well like he's taken to this girl," said this one lady after church one evening after i was playing with her kid in church. And up comes this other lady who knows me since i was really tiny and says to the lady who's child i was playing with..."but everybody loves mandy, she's the sweetest thing".

i felt really great after that :)

2. Healer always tell me that he wishes he was as thoughtful as me.

3. He's constantly telling me how beautiful i am.

4. i cook real good: anything you want, i can make or bake :)

5. I'm a real good writer.

6. I have a good sense of humour.

7. Another thing i always hear from one of the barmen at this bar we always go to is that "mandy is always smiling, you never see her upset even when she is. she's just the friendliest person i know." and he always tells this to the person he's talking to whenever we walk in.

Nikki, after seeing you're old list, I looked up mine. It was a little over a year ago. I was in a much different place then, but most of the things still count. It's good to look at this because honestly the past few months has really not been good for my self-esteem. I didn't like myself for awhile because of some choices I made and I'm still trying to forgive myself even though the person I hurt the most has already forgiven me. So I'm working on #9.

I'll substitute #9 with I'm kicking ass at Mensa Crosswords and that makes me feel really smart. :)
