Dealing with your daughters GYN problems

So as some of you know Amanda turned 16 last week and it looks like she is going to be getting her introduction to the wonderful world on female problems earlier than I'd have liked.

She got her period when she was 12 (almost 13) and lately she has been having a lot of pain. The doctor ordered a pelvic US for her and we got the results today. She's got a cyst on her right ovary that is the same size as her uterus. Its measuring 5.1 x 4.2 x 4.9 cm (roughly 2 inches).

She's been referred to a gyn who THANKFULLY has scheduled her in for Sept 4th (not the months off I was imagining) to see her, do her first pelvic exam and go over her options.

I've had cyst problems since after she was born, luckily for me BC pills took care of it and they said that might be an option for her. On top of facing her first exam (2 years earlier than we'd planned) she is MORTIFIED that if she has to go on BC someone might find out and think her, um more social than she is if you get my meaning.

I'd rather having my entire female area covered in cysts than have her go thru this right now

its going to be a very long two weeks

I had a few female friends who went on BC for various reasons when we were teens. Nobody thought for a second that they were loose girls; they had valid medical reasons for being on birth control. I went on birth control when I was 17 because 1) I wanted to be used to it before I headed off to college and 2) I had heard it was helpful for women with painful menstrual cramps. It definitely is, and I have stayed on it since regardless of being sexually active or not.

My mom and I had to deal with a lot of similar sorts of stuff when I was a teen due to my incredibly painful periods; I think the key for getting through for the both of us was a lot of open and supportive communication. I still remember going in for my first exam and having the doctor ask my mom to leave the room so we could talk in private; I was completely befuddled as to why the doctor might want to do that. She asked me if there was anything I wanted to tell her now that my mother was gone, and I said no. She seemed puzzled by that, and I explained that there was really nothing I couldn't or wouldn't say in front of my mother. My mother knows nearly everything about me, and always has.

Shani, I think Amanda is so lucky to have a mom like you. I know what a rock and a lifesaver my own mother was, and I am glad that she has you to be that for her. I wish you both the best in getting through this. These problems are by no means easy to deal with, but somehow we get through them. :icare:

I went on them at 14. It's much more common now than when I was younger and typically people "get it" when someone says they're on b/c for medical issues. I'm glad she has you, too, and I'm totally floored, by the way, that she's 16. When I joined tfp... she was 11. :)

Thanks :) I know Im old lol back when I was her age any girl on BC was looked at as a slut (at least at my high school lol) Its just so hard to be worried but not where she can tell. I KNOW there probably isnt a reason to be worried, but there is always that litty bitty chance....and she's my child, I still dont like her using knives in the kitchen or question if she can get the tea pitcher off the top shelf of the fridge.

Noodle, YOU cant believe she's 16? I remember holding her in my arms when she was minutes old like it was yesterday.

I've had so many problems with cysts I was just really praying she wouldnt go down the same road...and hell mine didnt start until my late 20's

I take BC because my body cannot make the hormones needed to kickstart my period every month. Taking BC for other things other than being promiscuous exists and is VERY normal. My roommate must take a special type of BC (with iron in it) to help with her anemia since it gets pretty bad during her time of the month. My other friend had to take BC to help with something that popped up after she was diagnosed and treated with either chlamydia or syphilis (I forgot). (She wasn't promiscuous.. but her boyfriend turned out to be.)

Just tell your daughter that it's very common to take BC for various reasons and it won't mean she's a "stupid whoreface". If the other girls or kids have an issue with her taking BC, tell her to tell them to shove it up their asses.. or that she has health conditions that require her to take BC.

Ok, are YOU worried or is SHE worried here? lol

Even back when I was in school, 'everyone' was on it. Not that it's a cool thing necessarily, but it pretty much usually meant a) the girl's having sex (big deal) or b) it's for medical issues (big deal.)

If she really is super scared of others finding out, just make sure she takes her pill at night before bed instead of sometime during the day, when she'd have to break out the pack during lunch period. Don't even let her take them out of the house I'm thinking.

And I don't know anything about cysts so sorry I can't help there. :/

Well I dont have to worry about her doing it school lol she is home schooled. I have to learn times and things have changed and its not the early 80's anymore

She's worried of course, which means I can let her know Im concerned and there might be cause for worry and discuss it all with her, but I cant let her see Im freaking about it lol

Well now that makes a lot of sense regarding the worry. She's home-schooled. So she doesn't have that interaction with hundreds of kids everyday like others - to see how many girls are actually on bc. I understand better now.

So I'm out of suggestions. lol

 You and me both. We totally know what we're watching out for, right? ;)

You're a great mommy, Shani. No need to be skeered, you're her rock.
