Ladies,

How many of you would buy a piece of clothing if it fit you in a size or two above what you normally wear? I know I wear completely different sizes from place to place.

My answer? I would. I don't really care about sizes as long as it looks nice.

Im not sure what you are asking here. Are you wondering if one would buy clothing based on the number on the label (size) vs what actually fit? If it is the first, I don't care about that number. I like to wear what I think is appropriate for the occasion, is comfortable, and looks the best.

Yep, that's what I'm asking.

For instance, a woman who wears a size 6, goes to a store and the 6 is too tight, they try on a size 8 and it fits perfect. Some people are so stuck on being a 6, they buy the pair that's too tight or just give up on piece of clothing.

People really do that?

Oh yeah. Half of the girls I know are unwilling to go up a size, even if it's just the store that makes the clothing a little smaller.

Yup, I'm the same way.

I don't usually have much of a problem with sizes.. but there are a couple of places I go shopping where I'll either have to get a size smaller or bigger... depends on the brand and all that...

When I shop, I walk up to a rack, I pick up clothes that look like they'll fit, then the next size up, next size down, try them all on, and purchase what looks nice.

Just checked a few labels, looks like I have clothes in size 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Do I feel good when I find that size 2 that works out? Kinda. Does it bother me at all to wear a 6 in another brand? Nope.

I have met people with the mentality you describe. Seems a shame.

You see, that is the key - girls. Women don't care, it's just a number. Different brands have different sizes, even when they are called the same thing. What mattersi s that it looks good. And hey, if you're embarrassed, you can always cut the tag off.

I don't care, but I agree that if the size down from my usual fits, I wonder if I've lost weight and feel happy. I'm only human :pEdit: ok, wait, if it says xxl I do think twice...I might still buy it though.

Yeah, it doesn't matter to me. I have 4's through 10's in my closet. Mostly I wear a 6, though...right now. :p It fluctuates, so having a range is a good idea.

I shop in thrift stores where everything is all thrown together, and I find that manufacturer's sizes can vary wildly. For instance, the Banana Republic and Ann Taylor sizes run large, so I can wear their 4s because they fit like 6s. Whereas The Limited and DKNY seem to be true 6s. And then there are manufacturers whose sizes run small as well, Tommy Hilfiger is one, I have to wear an 8 in Hilfiger jeans, because they seem to be made for girls without an ass, lol.

So, the moral too all that is I don't see how it's feasible to stick to one size. I HATE being in clothes that don't fit me right, especially if they are too tight.

I buy what fits me. If I remember the size, it's only so it's easier for me to find the same article of clothing (e.g. jeans, bra, etc) the next time I need to buy it. I start with some vague idea of the number that I think fits me, and then I go from there. Hell, my wedding dress was a 12 or 14 or something, because that's just how wedding dresses get sized (those breasts are always an issue, in those cases--hence why I have XL tops from some brands, and S from another).

I think it's asinine that girls would be so obsessed with their image (not that people can even see the sizes written on their labels, but whatever) as to refuse to go up a size. That's just lack of common sense, right there... and/or a glaring level of insecurity. As I've commented in other threads, I might know the mentality behind this kind of behavior, and understand it in its context--but once again, I don't condone it. I've never heard anyone that I know talk in that manner, but I wouldn't have been surprised to hear it from my 16-17 year old high school students, when I was teaching.

Some stuff fits in a size 14, some a size 16, some even an 18....I dont really care

You ever been in a wedding dress store with person who would normally be a 6 when she finds out the dress of her dreams fits her in a size 18? ahahaha THATS funny.....you'd think a person old enough to get married would know wedding dresses are always sized WAY larger

Well, I'm a grown woman who has been married twice and I didn't know that wedding dresses had different sizes. Not that I care. :lol:

i was exaggerating a tad....I think a normal size 6 is around a 10 in wedding dress size (depending on the style)

but yes....bridal dresses are sized way different

This could be useful information one day, 'cause I've always wanted to do it in a wedding dress. :p

Yep, I range between size 4-8, depending on the brand, but as I said earlier, my wedding dress was 12-ish, then bumped up to 14 because of my boobs. I learned to expect this earlier, while being a bridesmaid for 4 different weddings... and watching the faces of my friends in shock about their wedding-dress size. :lol:

I wear clothes than fit. The number is not important. Fit is even more important to me after losing weight; all of my old pants were 12-14 and are too baggy/big to fit me any more. It's kind of sad; I had a pair of dark gray velvet pants that I loved and didn't get to wear much before they became too big.

I buy a lot of clothes at Costco, which can be a crap shoot size-wise. The best indicator of true pants size I've found has been Levis Jeans. Trying on pairs of Levis at my local store gave me a number to take to Costco, which I usually stick to. It's rare that the Levis size trick does not work on jeans at Costco.

And abaya, I have the boob problem too. I'm running into it more and more since I lost weight. This is why I usually wear knits with stretch in them.

I know this feeling. I went up and then back down about 15 pounds last year and I have several pairs of beautiful slacks (real scores!) that I love hanging in my closet that no longer fit me.

I hate trying on clothes, so I generally just grab the 8's and go. However....
in the past year I've put on almost 20 lbs and some of those 8's don't fit, most fit snugly and some that I've grabbed in the past turned out then to be too large, but fit now.
It's not economically feasible for me to go buy all new 10's or 12's, so I squeeze my fat ass into the 8's and thank the heavens they're 'stretch' jeans.
It also helps me eat less.

Hmmm well I too wear the size that fits regardless of the number printed on the tag. I will say that I find it disheartening when I go into a store and their 'plus size' begins at a 12. It's no wonder women have body image complexes.

I go by what fits. Different brands fit differently. Many years ago, the sizes were more uniform betweent he brands, and I pretty much avoided purchases that I deemed to be "mis-size-tagged.":D

I have learned not to buy toddler clothes at a thrift store unless I have her with me. The teen clothes and grade school clothes are usually ok, but many toddler items have alot of shrinkage. My size 2 bebe can fit into size 2, 3 and sometimes 4 from a thrift store. I'm guessing it's due to excessive washing and drying to get all the dirt/food/glue/glitter/fingerpaint/mom's makeup out.

yeah, i'm fine with it as long as all my other clothes fit fine, but if i put something on and then notice i gained a couple pounds i run straight for the gym. i live in hollywood and with everyone so vain out here it starts to rub off on you.

Yes, washing can be a factor on fit when buying used clothing. But, you know, I always found baby and toddler clothes to be sized even more erratically than women's clothes.

And the good thing about buying clothes that have already been washed is that you know they've already been shrunk. There's nothing like paying $25 bucks for that awesome t-shirt only to have it come out of the dryer looking like a 4T, lol.

I have found that clothing labels are so dang screwy these days I pretty much have to buy in various sizes. I am not so vain that it bothers me if something fits me yet is in a larger size than I typically would wear. Lately, I have found myself wearing anything from a size zero to a size 5.
