Suicide Girls...thoughts?
 

I've been thinking about modeling for a little while now and I wanted to know what other women thought about them...especially if there may be some current or former models on this site. I currently have 12 piercings and 3 tattoos and will probably acquire more. I've also looked into other similar groups, like God's Girls and Deviant Nation...do you ladies have any thoughts on them also?

I can't speak from any experience about them, but the alt models are definitely hot. I guess it's a matter of your comfort level with having your pictures out there. If I had more of the look, I'd probably be tempted too. Was S.G. involved in some controversy about how they treated their models recently? I could be wrong about that. Sorry I don't have more advice than that.

I know about Suicide Girls, as a photographer I've come across people who work with them quite often. Yes they were involved in some controversy but I'm of the opinion that the whole thing was started by an ex employee who was unhappy and that it is really no different than anything else of that caliber.

If you want to model there are many sites out there dedicated to connecting models with photographers and I know that works for alot of people. If you'd like to try to model as a Suicide Girl you may need some experience but if you just want some photos that are that same style I'm sure you can find a photographer who would love to do that.

Agreed. :) I always thought it would be so much fun to be a Suicide Girl. Everytime I think about one of the piercings or tattoos I want to get, I think to myself that it would make me just a little more Suicide Girl-ish cool. :lol: I rarely come across a SG I don't adore. :)

As for actually doing it, if you think you'd be comfortable with it, then go for it. Worst thing that happens is that they say no. *shrug*

I love that they are trying to redefine what is considered hot in our society. They have everything the good little pinup girls of our parents age did not have - piercings, tattoos, and attitude. They are saying something about the girls these days! We are empowered, we are unique, and quite frankly.... we (they) kick ass. I say do it, I have been considering shooting for them (behind the camrea mind you) for awhile and if you were in my state I would be glad to work with you!

Actually, I meant that I would like to photograph them! I'm not quite suicide girl material, lol. But I agree, I think all of the one's I've seen are adorable. :)

edit - I've got this fantasy of photographing nude women and making them feel all relaxed and sexy, talking to them, encouraging them and really opening up for my camera...so to speak. ;)

Go for it! Why not. Esp. if you get to have copies of the negs. to keep.
And -
I would make sure that you get to have final approval on any (and all) pics that are used and copywritten. I wish I had done that several years ago when I had some pics taken professionally....back in the old film & 35mm camera days :)

I enjoy the concept behind Suicide girls, aka, killing that part of yourself that is mainstream. great stuff and the celebration of 'real' beauty.

I think you should do it, if they have an open availability. I had a friend try, but they didn't accept her. So I dunno...

A sobering perspective from one of our brothers...

Usually big groups like Suicide Girls don't give much or any say to their models. Ultimately the company owns the copyright so they don't have to really listen to you. Granted most photographers will listen to you on some accounts but they also get say over the model most of the time (just how the industry works). There are alot of exceptions to this though. And if you think about it, your ideas may be good and you may have things to say but the photographer is the one with the training and the experience. Plus SG has really good photographers and chances are they will do a great job portraying you.

Also the chances are very very slim that they will give you the actual negaives but I believe you do get something sometimes depending on the situation. Again, it's a copyright issue. I am happy to give my models copies of their photos but if I were to find them selling those photos without my consent or something I would definately not be happy.

Also, as to this man's opinion of the company. I really don't believe they are doing anything that any other company wouldn't do. I mean yeah it sucks but contract breaches are usually not taken lightly. Really, companies do that all the time and I wouldn't rule out modeling for them because of it.

I personally feel a lot more relaxed in front of the camera if someone else is doing all the photography work - just lets me be myself, and often, they catch me in the moments I'm not trying to create, if that makes sense.

Would I personally do SG? While I love the concept .. I don't think i'm so keen on the widespread publicity. I'm very much a dark corners girl... i'd want to to do it for the experience and pics for myself, but not for the world to see.

They don't work for me, either. I'll let him know.

It seems to me that I have read that they are very limiting in their exclusivity clauses. The girls can't model for other sites for five years or something, which is rediculous if true. And they don't pay much.

What the heck good is it to work for a site where you don't get paid well *and* you can't use it for your portfolio to get other modeling jobs? I hope that's not correct, but that's what I've heard.

Sultana - Thats how the industry is these days. YOu want to play, theyll make you pay. I worked as a photographer and I was under two different non-breaches when i went from one studio to another, and the amount of trouble i could have had put on me as unimaginable. But thats how teh industry is.

Hi, i guess if you wanna do modelling its better for you to join those huge reputable ones. I am taiwanese but i reside on the other side of ur earth. singapore. i did modelling here and even in this 'safe' town. i was slime by sleazebags in this industry. shrugs. Unless one is supermodel material with a body to die for. i seriously think its not worth of an experience.

I'm sad to hear that your modeling experience didn't go well. I think the experience all depends on how good the people that you're working with are. I'm in school to become a professional photographer and one of the biggest things I'm learning from the people ahead of me is how to work with models and how to make people feel comfortable and happy to work with you. Sadly a lot of people never learn this.

I have been a glamour model and never had any nasty experiences, and as you can see from my pics on myspace I am far from supermodel, I am 5'3 and chubby!

I would love to be a suicide girl, but am tattoo and peircing free.
