Origins of TFP??

Im curious about the origins of TFP, I was going to just send Halx a mail but I thought It might be better to get input from those of you that have been around since the start (or near). Besides Im kinda scared of him, Dont ask me why.
Having joined just weeks before V.3 went under (RIP) I wonder what V.1 & 2 were like.
What happend to V.1 & 2? (If its too sad to talk about, I understand)
Has this community always been like this?
How does this forum succeed when countless others fall victim to hatred & spam?
When did it all start?
WHY did It start?

I would also like to thank All the moderators for thier tireless work, You diserve trophys for what you (we??) have created.
Peace.

warrrreagl 05-21-2003 09:22 AM

I've had many of the same questions, magpie. I was going to ask them one day, but you beat me to it.

As I troll through various older posts, I run across names with the word "banned" written under it, so I assume that Halx and the other Tireless Moderators speak softly and carry a big stick.

Midnight_Son 05-21-2003 09:29 AM

there's no need to fear Halx or the mods (unless your a total stain) they're here to help and they're also the number one reason why this place is as good as it is. I wish I had more history for you but alass...I do not. although....I do have this theory about Halx needing a place to show off his third leg.
Halx, we love ya man!

Magpie0001 05-21-2003 09:37 AM

Im not scared of him for any particular reason, Its just, I dunno, Hmmmm,
Dont get me wrong, I know theyre here to help & I apreciate that greatly. I have upmost respect for Halx, & the other mods.
[/ass kissing] Halx replied to a thread started by me a week or so back & I was in awe! "Hark, It is he!!"
I must be crazy!!

Midnight_Son 05-21-2003 09:52 AM

not to worry, we're happy you're here....now we just need an "old timer" in here to answer your question.

rogue49 05-21-2003 10:08 AM

Many of the mods know it, such as myself.
But maybe it would be more it would be more appropriate for Halx, BuDDaH, ZC or couple of others from the start to tell it.

SecretMethod70 05-21-2003 10:26 AM

I, like Rogue, will defer the question to Halx or BuDDaH or Zerocool. I came on I think right near the end of v1 and let me tell you this: this place has changed and improved a LOT since then!

But, like I said, and rogue said before me, Halx and/or BuDDaH and/or Zerocool could definitely answer this best as I think they are the longest remaining members.

Halx 05-21-2003 10:59 AM

ok children.. gather 'round and I'll tell you a story. The story of TFP. It's not really spectacular, but it's what you asked for.

So, a long time ago, I created a gaming clan called TBA. We played Unreal Tournament Instagib, and (maybe I'm gloating) we were the best! Well, at least we were in Team Deathmatch. Undefeated. SO ANYWAYS, since I've got my bragging out of the way, here's the important stuff. We had our own message board. It resided at tba-ownz.org and it was created so our bad-ass members could hang out and be rowdy away from the main community message board, which was censored and full of stupid IRC-like sillyness. We called that board 'Disneyland' and so in contrast, we called our board 'This Aint Disneyland, Bitch!' Our board consisted of 4 main sections... General Discussion, Titty Board... Amen (TBA), Ownage Board, and something else that I forget. Time went on, and as gaming usually goes, things got really dramatic around our clan. I think we broke up and reformed 3 times in 2 years. Eventually we all couldn't stand eachother - every single clan in the community had at least 1 former TBA member and so every match we'd play, there was animosity flying all over the place. I called it quits on the gaming, and the clan dissolved.

So months after the dissolution, I sat there with an empty message board. I renamed it the Tilted Forum Project (I didn't like the name at first, but I wanted to name it SOEMTHING else.) Nobody came around anymore except for ZeroCool, so it was pretty much a barren landscape. I had been visiting a site (you might have heard of it) called Fark.com and I had a little urge to put a link up... to what I did not know. So it hit me, I have a Titty Board. Fark has boobies links. A match made in heaven. I went into Fark's irc channel and hung out one Sunday morning (Jan 20, 2002), and I asked one of the moderators if they'd post a boobies link for me. They took a loot at my site, asked me if the server could handle it, and I said sure. So I submitted the Titty Board link and they accepted it. Incoming traffic!

So for the rest of that day, I was updating the Titty Board like mad, to keep the people happy. A few peeps registered and posted a few pictures of their own - that was the idea. Time went on, and more and more people kept visiting through Fark... so many in fact that we ended up busting into the top 25 boobies links page.

Ok, I had all this free traffic, all coming for free boobies. That's great, but I knew I wanted more than that. I had no more online community to hang out with because I had left gaming. I figured I'd create one for myself.

What do I want out of a community? Well, after seeing first hand what happens when you let people run rampant, I came to realize that I really didn't enjoy being caught in all that animosity. I wanted to feel safe enough to share my feelings and have people share theirs with me. With that idea in mind, I created a few rules that I sought to enforce, and I started using some tactics to siphon people away from the Titty Board, into the general discussion area.

Who would have known it? Porn surfers are just like anyone else. Before I created this site, I would have told you that porn surfers were a bunch of shady delinquents who have dirty vocabularies and hairy palms. I have learned a lot since then.

So, the TFProject has had 5 different hosts, with 3 complete rebuilds. I estimate we've processed about 100K people and over a million posts. There are a few message boards that are larger and more popular, but that only means my job isn't done yet.

Midnight_Son 05-21-2003 11:06 AM

wow, the complete history from the man himself! outstanding!

well, I think I speak for everyone when I say "job well done"

Plummie 05-21-2003 11:10 AM

Well said, Halx! :) Bravo!

I knew the TFP stemmed off of Fark.com but I had no idea it stemmed from a gaming clan back in the day.

Very cool, indeed.

Um. And you're saying that's not the case?? :D

Cynthetiq 05-21-2003 11:58 AM

nice.... I didn't know about the tba-ownz part... but I did originally come from that first fark link... amazing! I was amazed!!!!! I still am amazed.. not from boobies anymore but from the community.

I do remember the inital 2.0 board... I remember the first crash... and of course the most recent. :) this place is a great place to spend some time being a voyeur and also jumping into the fray and adding your own comments.

thanks halx... it's been a great ride so far.

VirFighter 05-21-2003 12:25 PM

I heard about this place through word of mouth and didn't join until version 3. Glad I'm here though and cool to hear how it all started.

Lebell 05-21-2003 12:31 PM

That's a fascinating story, Halx.

I myself got linked here through a place called full-auto (www.full-auto.com) which does there own small titty board in addition to class 3 weapons.

I wish I could remember who it was that put up the link because I know I would thank them.

Anyway, I can say that I still haven't been to fark. I don't see the point now :)

juanvaldes 05-21-2003 01:56 PM

....ahhh yes, I remember that first day. Got in, there were a few folks posting and I started clicking. :)

I feel the same way as you do, Magpie0001. I'm intimidated by Halx. Do 'ya think maybe he wants to keep it that way?

WhoaitsZ 05-21-2003 02:39 PM

heh I didn't know about the game clan either.

i still remember seeing it on fark like something crazy. i came, registered (I think i was WhoaitsZ, then) and d/l boobies. i was on dial-up. i'd click a link, go to another window... in ten to twenty minutes the pics would be loaded.:)

i saw it on the boobies top 25... and i knew it'd rise... then , what, a month? it took over #1. conqured GOOGLE.

Google. it beat google

thats crazy

anyhow. i always wanted to post but couldn't ever find space.... later on after it going up and down up and down i took a few identities cuz i never posted and got deleted. as for why, i don't know. call it idiocy. i went through a lot of names with a Z in them.

i kept bugging a friend to check you guys out and he asked me if i ever looked at the threads. me being a bbs guy never did... didn't care to... untill i got bored one night. then i fell in love with it... i was StillZ. then it died.... now we're here.

i enjoy watching things grow.. i'm odd, though. i lurk on several diff things on the net.. when i... accept people, i jump right in.. act like i've been blabbing with ya for years. but since i lurk i know many of the people's personality, so its an easy transition.

it's great.

hmm. lost my point

ps: Halx doesn't scare me at all. he seems very honest and high mischevious. it's the conivers and power trip folk i do not like.

krwlz 05-21-2003 03:12 PM

Personaly, regardless of how or why this magnificant peice of work came into existance, I'm very glad it here...It has become me second home.

PS. Halx doesn't scare me, but his third leg does.....

Mondak 05-21-2003 03:39 PM

I would love to see a timeline. I think I got here when most of us did. I think it was April 2002. From Fark. When did TFP 1 go away etc.

Great story all. Bones made me laugh about the carpet square.

QuasiMojo 05-21-2003 04:11 PM

Oh what a cool thread~

I arrived at the last incarnation of TFP. Arrived I did, at a kind of subtereanean point in my life. By way of Fark and Boobies did I come through the portal and after the glorious sheen of Free Boobies kind of wore thin(along with most of my palm prints) I discovered a whole 'nother world. The Lit board was, after a while, and for a time my most immediate form of gratification.

A N Y W A Y- who'd a thunk that this world was born of the
old Unreal.
Fraggin' A!

Oh, and Hal. Your Halo's showing

meembo 05-21-2003 04:41 PM

Sometimes it's good to be feared.
Sometimes it's not so good.

A lot of people assume that I dont have time to chat, for instance. Thus, I remain a lonely guy.

I do get a good reaction from what I say, though.

As far as the ass-kissing goes, I'm not accustomed to receiving compliments, and I really dont think of myself as all that great. Sometimes I'll play it out, but I believe the best compliment you can give a stranger is to find them interesting enough to want to get to know them.

With that in mind, I'd rather people used that kind of compliment on others in the community.

So let me get back on subject and say that running the TFP is like playing Sim City. Sure, I'm giving up all of my free time to do it, but it's fun to see it grow and develop. As with the game, if you expand too fast in areas that are not needed, you can crash pretty hard. I'd say that I'm doing well at my own private Sim City. I get the impression that the Mayor Approval rating is fairly high. We have enough resources to expand when we need to. The only thing we lack right now is links to outside territories. I'm a geek!

GoldenOuroboros 05-21-2003 06:03 PM

Good story Halx!

I was actually wondering the other day where TFP came from.. I thought that maybe it was just a data flux in the internet spacial time continium that Hal might have stumbled across and made it his own.. but alas.. it's still all good :D

I plead guilty. You come across as so self-assured, I just assumed you had tons of friends.

I wish I could deport the assholes in my city who don't like me and form angry mobs and try to trash the place :)

As for the links to outside territories, I've tried calling Howard Stern while he was discussing porn and/or the internet and sneaking in a site plug for you, but they never pick up the phone.

Macheath 05-21-2003 11:40 PM

Great history Halx

The Fark "comments thingee" about the TFP is still up in the top boobies section over at Fark.

http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comm...?IDLink=102266

It's kinda like the TFP's own federalist papers.

If I remember correctly (and I may very well not) it was something like mid-March. Then came the short-lived TFP2. TFP3 celebrated around its 1 year birthday by crashing and causing TFP4, so I think you can figure it out from that ;)

Halx 05-22-2003 01:04 AM

I think Secret has it about right.

BuDDaH 05-22-2003 03:25 AM

I couldn't wait....

My story:

I used to play the same game Halx did, but I was in one of the top European clans. I heard of the "Best of the West Clan"
called TBA and went looking for them. (Halx in particular, he was the best they had.)

I found them but to my dismay, Halx "retired" and no matter how much prodding you gave, he would'nt play anymore. (He had his hands full with the board, and mostly because the other fools ruined the game.)

So, I stuck around and after chatting with him abit and hanging around, things started to pick up quickly and I offered to give a hand since ZeroCool joined the Marines. Since then, a friendship was born, and so were the "SnakeBrothers".

After V.1, I suggested to to hold tighter reigns on TFP and Halx first rejected the idea until he saw a need for "someone" to crack a whip, and ofcourse, I seen no problem with that..

Halx is the kind of "real-easy" going kind of person and I have a "drop at the speed of gravity" temperment.

We are so alike but also so "night and day".

(Much kudos to silent but effective, ZeroCool.)

Since then, I've seen alot of people come and go...

Daval 05-22-2003 06:04 AM

I came in via Fark at the end of V2 - like within a few weeks. Been here every since :)

rockogre 05-22-2003 06:28 AM

I too got here via FARK about a year ago. Only board I have ever had any interest in. Once I started participating I couldn't stop. Still hanging in.

suviko 05-22-2003 06:47 AM

I was also going to ask about the orgins (once did in IRC but I asked "when was it orginally founded?" and got answer that "there was no one date, it just evolved" and thought "right, gotta ask again when they are in better moods.." :) ) but saves me the trouble. I think a lot of people are intrested in this and other questions apart the technical stuff in the board FAQ another FAQ for just TFP would be good.

Okay now this made me laugh out loud!!
Seriously though, thanks Halx for the whole story. I've been curious about the origins myself and it's nice to get the history behind this fab place!
Thanks also to the great mods - your hard work is what makes this the best site going.

iRtehCrispeh 05-22-2003 09:07 AM

I aint been around here long but im glad i finally found it! Thats a good story about the origins! Good thread:D

troit 05-22-2003 09:35 AM

I knew about the Fark link from others later but actually found TFP through stickfigurepeepshow. Don't know how I got to Hal's personal site but if memory serves me correctly there was a link to tba-ownz on it. This was last March. I lurked around for a couple of weeks, decided the place was "safe" to hang out in an the rest is history (or addiction...;)).

I've been here for awhile, started as a lurker and then made a comment of some sort, and was hooked.
I never knew the history and am very impressed by the efforts of the few for the many.
But that being said the "mods" still make me nervous, however I am more then thankfull that they're here.

SecretMethod70 05-22-2003 10:24 AM

Well, since everyone else is saying, I came here through www.fark.com, which I got to through www.wilwheaton.net, which I got to through www.slashdot.org. This was sometime last year in late February or early March, and I believe that was around the end of v1.

Magpie0001 05-22-2003 10:36 AM

I need to clarify a coupla things, Please dont assume Im ass kissing, coz im not.
Im not scared of him for any reason I can think of. Upmost respect in fact. All the posts I've read of his shine. Smart, friendly, thoughtfull, never mean, cant fault the guy.
Maybe its just a respect thing. Ive never spoken to him in person but far as I know hes the nicest person you or I'll ever meet.
Its just when I see his avatar maybe coz Ive associated him with this great place it makes me shudder a little. My palms sweat a little, I pause a little more between typing bursts.

"Behold!, the great one has arrived, He is here, amongst us!, PRAISE BE!"

I know Ive said this before but, I just dont get it? All the people Ive "met" here are so fucking cool.

I wish I had friends like this in real life.

Atropos4 05-22-2003 12:03 PM

I arrived at tfp in march before 3 crashed. I'd grown to love this site it such a short time, so when it crashed I was bummed. Then tfp4 was made and I've been a happy camper ever since. :)

I wouldn't say Hal scares me. Not at all. I just have the utmost respect for him.

Fly 05-22-2003 02:40 PM

a buddy told me about this place right on the day i got my pc.

so since Xmas of '02 i've been here.

got in shit right off the bat for being an asshole, smartened up a bit,got in shit again for being an asshole, then realized that if i fuck up again(been warned a few times eh)that i wouldn't be allowed to stick around here any more.that was not an option to me cuz this place is a hoot man.

so.....thanx for the history lesson all you mods, and cheers to you for this great place

Eviltree 05-22-2003 04:59 PM

I got here through the boobies link at 'ol Fark. At first I saw the whole "sign in" bit, and It scared me becuase I thought I was supposed to pay. Later, I returned and tried to make an account. Imagine my surprize when it didn't cost a cent. I was extra-greatful and have been addicted ever since. As for the mods and Halx, I respect their descisiouns and feel that they are, however all-powerful they may be, good people, and it wouldn't be the same place without them. Thanks to all the mods for making the TFP the wonderful place it is.

guenwyv 05-22-2003 05:08 PM

Great history lesson. I too came in to TFP from Fark.com, and that was around April of 2002. Took me along time to post because of my schedule, so I always opted to donate when I could. I donate not because of the Titties(well..ok, I still hit the titty board) but because I enjoy the cultural differences on this board.

Art really amazes me by his lifestyle and his ability to think in a different shade, and that draws me in even more because it challenges the way I was brought up. That alone will make me a better person.

rogue49 05-22-2003 06:23 PM

I started in v.3 early summer through Fark.
I was a lurker at first, but just before the first lurker purge,
I started saying Thanks and rating threads.
Then I started seeing the other forums, and there was no turning back.

The rep's been building ever since.
Good, bad or ugly. Hopefully, mostly good.

I've been addicted to Halx's uber-Internet-crack for almost a year now,
around the fall I started giving back to the site I came to care about,
involving myself in the avatar vote & a get-together,
and became a mod shortly thereafter.

Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your experiment.
sharing in the words & thoughts of my fellow members
and working with my fellow mods to make this wonderful site better.

KWSN 05-22-2003 08:25 PM

Well, as I see we have a few stories going, I think I'll share mine about coming to the TFP...

One day, about a couple years ago, I was bored. And by that, I mean REALLY bored. I was 18 then and seizing my newfound right to look legally at Internet porn... but the problem was that I, being cashless, STILL couldn't look at the paysites. So I was just typing in random words and using them as .coms, and one of them was "biznizzy.com." I went to the site, and it was kind of boring. So I went to the links bar, to see if any of the sites there were porn. I clicked a bunch, but they all turned out to be about the same. One thing was a bit odd though. All the sites that I went to seemed to have the same links bar, or at least similar links bars. I noticed a recurring banner for FARK.COM, but I didn't click on it until I realized that all the others weren't porn. Immediately, I came to enjoy it quite a bit. I lurked there for a VERY long time, eventually registered under the name K.W.S.N. (with the dots) and stuck around for the boobies. I noticed the titty board link one day, but for some reason I wasn't that interested (go figure). I began to get into the Fark IRC a lot after Fark started to bore me a bit, and I quickly became a regular there. For almost I year I stuck around in there. I remember Hal (Halx36) was one of the regulars there too. Despite his presence, I still never bothered to go near the TFP. Until one day, when I got drunk and decided to troll Fark. Within five minutes of idiocy, I was banned. I told a friend of mine (who is known as Diablo here) that I needed a new site to go to, and he told me about the TFP. I decided to give it a try, because there was really nothing else I could do. This was August 2002. Within about 5 minutes, I fell in love with the titty board, and I was the happiest person alive. I got about 70 posts, but then I faded away, due to the fact that I had seen just about everything there after constant surfing it for a week. Until November, I kept myself amused in other ways. But one day, in a fit of boredom, I decided to go on the TFP for the hell of it.. and lo and behold: MORE FORUMS! I decided to get into the discussion forums (see how they sized up to Fark discussion) and I was hooked right away. Since then, I've become a bit of a prominent figure here (ish) and I hope to keep it that way. I've been on this board and interested for WAY longer than any other board I've ever signed up to, and I hope it stays that way. My favorite part of the board right now is the Nonsense board... it's just ridiculously fun (actually, I made a thread in TFP v3 suggesting a Nonsense board (even though at the time the All-Billege forum was around) so I consider myself important in its existence :D )

Hal, this board is great... the way it's running now, I don't think you need to change a thing. Ever.

d4in 05-23-2003 07:51 AM

great story...thanks to all who added to it. I joined via....fark...around feb/march 03 and have loved it ever since.

4thTimeLucky 05-23-2003 08:40 AM

I followed the same route that most did back in mid-2002.

Fark to Titty Board to TFP proper.

It seems to be a natural progression that most undertake (I now find Fark to be like a candle to the sun). What I wonder is... what comes after TFP in the web voyage of life?

Mr. Mojo 05-23-2003 10:47 AM

Great story, thanks for the info- i was curious

I joined after see TFP on Fark. and i joined Fark from reading about it in Playboy

Glad-I-Ate-Her 05-23-2003 06:44 PM

I also as most of the original crew found TFP through Fark. I was a lurker at the beginning and finally registered about April 02. I've been here ever since. Through the growing pains (eliminating about 25,000 lurkers?!) and the re-incarnations. Always for the better!

After being here so long, I finally learned the origins. Great story.

Thanks Hal for your efforts. They are greatly appreciated by many.

Glad

duckduck 05-24-2003 09:43 AM

I also found it through Fark. Saw the original posting on the front, but didn't click. Joined v.2, but it crashed about a week later and I didn't come back for a loooong time (thought that since it had crashed, that would be it and over and done deal.......yes, I was very wrong). Very happy that it's back up and running.

Still working on Vici. (Haven't figured out what it would mean in a TFP context anyway, so it's a bit hard to do if you haven't got a clue what it involves!)

I came via Fark, at some stage during V.2 in early 2002. I think it wasn't necessary then to actually register to view? That seems to be the first change I can remember.

This place is like a huge subterranean complex that I used to visit in my dreams as a child - always more corridors and stairways to explore, new rooms to find, new things to see.

Anyway, thanks to the mods for running this place and reincarnating it when it has died, and to everyone else for putting yourselves into it! :)

I laughed at your link list, because it was just lke mine. Except I found slashdot.net through freshmeat.net.

thanks for the history and all the work you and the others put into this board.

arrived via fark also...glad i did...backstory for tfp is cool thanks

Troublebot 06-23-2003 10:24 AM

Man, glad to hear the story of how TFP was born. Now I just hope I'm here for it's skinned-knees childhood and it's "fumbling in the backseat" teenage years.

I've never been interested in posting on boards before, but something about TFp and the people on it pulled me in and got me posting. Thanks folks.

Thanks to everyone who started it and keep it going day to day. It's a great site.

cockmonger 08-04-2003 10:29 PM

I've been kicked off TFP about 3 times. why? for being a porn surfer. to this day i'm a porn surfer. but as far as those tactics to getting people into the other boards. they worked. as soon as i was tired of ass kissing people like Candyman and other for thier great xxx link posts. i had to find another place to post so you wouldn't boot my ass out again. now i love the Games and Music boards and the photshop shit thats done around here is amazing. i do miss the porn but everything else around here is so loving and open it's tremendous.

Spinach_Indeed 08-05-2003 07:00 AM

Blah Blah Blah Fark, Blah Blah Blah Mid 2002, Blah Blah Blah V3.0

That's my story. When I first Registered, I accidently registered as Spianch_Indeed. I made about 15 posts before relizing my error, and decided just to keep that name because I was lazy. Luckily though, V3.0 crashed, allowing me to get my proper names.

Good Times. Good Friends.

God Bless you TFP

Great story. Funny how things work out . . .

Regziever 08-05-2003 12:52 PM

Great story.. I have wonderd where it came from aswell.

My story for finding TFP is unkown to me (I have a verry selective memory for some reason). I found the place just before v.3 crashed and registerd. To be honest it was the Titty Board that interested me the most but i checked Humor as well. I still mostly hang out in the TB and Humor board but i quiet often check in on General Discussion and Members playground to see if there is any topic I find interesting.

Someday I might even post a pic of myself here aswell.. nopt that i think anyone would be interested but still I think my buttugly face would bring out a few laughs at least.

Nice history lesson.

Nice... Thanks for sharing the vision with the resot of us.

MichaelFarker 08-20-2003 08:55 PM

I really appreciate the story Halx. It makes it feel more like home here.

BuDDaH, I laughed out loud at the bullshit meter. I needed that. It hasn't been a laughter kind of day.

numberfive 08-20-2003 09:42 PM

Hmm, I got referred here by a friend one day. He was like, "Whats up" and when I told him I was lookin' for porn he linked me here and mentioned something about it being a UT board back when. I wasn't really looking for porn, I just didn't want to talk but I followed the link anyways. The boobs were nice but I found the people much more interesting. So I stayed.

Darkblack 08-21-2003 11:47 AM

Very cool story Halx Thanks.

woohoo, i got teh luv :)

anyways, adding to Halx's and Buddahs post, in January 2001 i was in a gamming clan called TDD(The Dirty Dozen) for the same game that Hal played and back then they had a server which i had played on regulary anlong with several other servers, anyways, i decied to come here. man were those the days, everybody had a blast until TBA got disbanded(BTW Hal, popo still hates that pic that was photoshoped  ) then it soon became the TFP and the rest is history :D

HeAtHeN 08-21-2003 02:02 PM

Now I know.... I actually came her for the comunity... then found the boobs. However, I'm happy to call TFP my new home...

.. I just left Neowin as I was sick of the friggin' kids there trolling. So TFP, you're stuck with me.

Speed_Gibson 08-21-2003 05:57 PM

first started dropping by here when it had a different URL and was just the titties board. Considered joining (was just lurking before) when registration was required, but decided to drop it. Came back here after 15-18 months and joined finally.

debaser 08-21-2003 06:16 PM

I found this place through Genmay, which I discovered through the [H], to which I was directed by the AR15.com mailing list...

What a long, strange trip it's been...

Maybe the best?? Your damn right we WERE the best :)

*Note: Hal is still looked at as one of the best players ever to play that game...he was a machine when it came to aiming.

I was told about TFP by juanvaldes, one of the mods here. I met juanvaldes at MacNN.com (a Mac board). I enjoy discussing Mac-related topics, but other than that MacNN did not have "substance" like TFP does. A few months ago (Spring 2003, I think) Juan told me about this place and said that it was for "mature people", so I checked it out under a different name then. Of course the Titty Board was a bonus! But like Halx said even porn surfers have other sides to them.

Thanks Halx for this site. And thanks juanvaldes for referring me. The one thing I have noticed (which I LOVE about TFP) is that the people here are NOT mean to one another. Either the mods are doing a super-great job (which I'm sure they are) or people are generally VERY respectful of each other here, and to that I say THANK YOU! At last, a place where I can call HOME. :D

ZërØ¢ØØ£ 08-21-2003 09:27 PM

lmao, i remember that pic :D

oberon 09-02-2003 01:09 AM

I also came in through fark, but it was close to the end of v3 (March 2003 I think, not long after I turned 21). It took me a while to decide to participate. I think I went through a similar stage to many others: "is this for real? a useful forum about life?".

Glad to say I'm still here.

yangwar 09-02-2003 05:42 AM

I always wondered about tba-ownz.org. Wow, I can die happy now.

Met22 09-02-2003 08:11 AM

I came to this special place in the first version of TFP. It was a place like no other. Like everybody else it seem I got here via FARK and was that a find. The board has gotten really good over the years because Hal always gave it his first priority. The three crashes were difficult but every one has been the rebirth of something better. Losing post counts were the biggest trauma but that was petty at best. Buddah, Liquor Dealer, BuCoMoFo, Bobby and Sixate are names that go way back. This environment bonds you, it opens the mind and frees the soul. Hal vision may have never come to this had the big crashes not occurred. We all held our breath and gave thanks each time a resurrection took place. It a storied history and a brotherhood that binds us all who have been here. This is a great story.

So basically, TFP owns its existence to titties. I came here about a month ago, and have been lurking, started posting yesterday, I think. Came here through the penny-arcade forums, I think.

thenewguy 10-14-2003 10:01 AM

I think I found the boards through fark and showed up during v2. Because I didn't get involved, I got axed and came back sometime during v3. That's when I started to get more involved, to donate - but still I'm mostly a lurker.

Today it's not much different. I lurk alot and post rarely, except to say 'thanks'. But I value the boards and I donate periodically.

It's nice to see people with passion who apply themselves and keep the momentum going, and it's fun to hear that they enjoy it. Sims we are, to be sure, oh Mayor Hal. And we are satisfied...

laconic1 10-14-2003 12:58 PM

April 29, 2002 was the day I discovered TFP through the link on Fark. I was in free tittie heaven. I didn't sign up then because you didn't have to to view posts back then, and since all I was interested in was free porn I was ok. I registered in July after registration was made compulsory, got booted sometime between July and October for being a lurker, (I didn't have internet access during this time), signed up again in December and have been a relatively active member since then.

powder 10-14-2003 01:35 PM

Jan 2002. Holy shit, I was perusing the titty board back then. To think If i had kept my original username I could be an old timer by now.

Latch 10-14-2003 07:44 PM

Some links from the past (I found these using the Internet Archive that seethreepo posted a while ago - Linky):

Earliest record of tba-ownz.org (March 1st, 2001)
TFP v1 (credit to Mr. Self Destruct for finding it and posting it in a different thread)
All records of tba-ownz.org
All records of tfproject.org

Thanks for the story guys!

Fire 10-15-2003 02:45 AM

dont post on any other board- and dont know what it is about this one, but it is something extraordinary- the diversity of topics and intellegent discussion is what keeps me here, I think, whatever it is , thanks to all

Hanxter 10-16-2003 08:41 AM

i go back to april/may of 2001...
what brought me here was a link i found to "Creative Undressing" - GAWD i loved that thread!!!...

after much lurking one day i saw that Hal had a need for some mod's and put up an application... i applied and grabbed him in chat where he did a half assed interview while his old boss was leaning over his shoulder...

we got into a convo one day and then out of the blue the phone rang... it was Hal and all he said is "We have some BIG changes!" and hung up. i had no fookin clue who it was or what till i saw my name on the bottom of the page italicized... WOWSERS...

we had a thing called "The Weekly Poster Child Awards" where you won nothing. That was pretty cool till he got tired of the boobies. we closed the boobies down to get others involved in the community. BuDDaH then created the Members Forum and then the Ladies Lounge and so on...

this site is an evolution in the present - it is forever changing and it's thru you , the members, that make this site work... we were even written up in USA Today's Life section under internet oddities as the fastest growing site on the net!!!

to that i'd like to thank you the members for your involvement and participation...

and to Hal & BuDDaH for letting me enjoy the funnest ride i've had in a long long time!!!

NOW GET BACK TO WORK, DAMMIT!!!

dragon2fire 11-27-2003 11:19 PM

How cool

nice to learn something about the commiuinty i spend so much time in

Jam 11-28-2003 12:19 AM

the only two reasons to fear Halx is if you act like an ass... and because he has a ginormous wang

so, you started out with distributing porn, and now your making it.... your a superstar :D

jay-g 11-28-2003 03:40 AM

Interesting on how things came about.....but two thumbs up for this site. I enjoy the tfp and appreciate the hard work. I like the community and think its a fun and positive place to be.

merkerguitars 11-29-2003 01:18 AM

I still remember when the titty board was first posted on fark.....
It is still the no.1 Boobies link!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.fark.com/Top25Boobies.html
Read the comments.....nice trip down memory lane

I joined right when the tfp needed you to be registered to look at the titty board......I was a bad lurker...posted like 9 times before I got booted...and then asked the dumb question...why??? And then I got my ass chewed by the mods...but I will admit...I deserved every little ounce of it. Then once I started to dig deeper and deeper and became a little less shy I have become a posting whore. And I gotta admit...I've been on other forums.....and I don't think I have ever found any other forum that is easy to use, well maintained, moderated this well, and has so much variance in topics and users.

Cynthetiq 11-29-2003 01:24 AM

*sigh* good times... good times :)

hobo 11-30-2003 06:42 PM

Interesting story. Nice to know the origins of this place.

Cycler 12-01-2003 02:58 PM

I think I came in somewhere around v2 but it wasn't from FARK or maybe it was so much has happened since then. Got the post count pretty high and was rocking along on v3, crash. Had some shit go down outside in real life and slowed way down on v4 but I am now back in the swing of things. Good times, indeed.
I remember the old tba link now I know what was behind it cool.
Good job Halx.

taliendo 12-01-2003 03:36 PM

I was led to Fark by a friend of mine, said it was a good site to get daily news. Seriously though -- got bored with fark real fast and started checking out the links, when I got to TFP, i stayed. this forum is just so damn addicting. I might be the only one from fark that didn't come for the boobies. . . :)

thanks for the history lesson. its very good to know where you've come from.

Jadey 12-01-2003 10:55 PM

Like a lot of others I discovered the TFP through Fark. If I can remember right it was just about a month or so before it required everyone to register. At first I just popped in every couple of days to check out the booby pics, and then found everything else there was. I've been hooked since.

analog 12-05-2003 01:43 AM

Can't believe i've never seen this thread.

I've been on board since early v.3, and this is bar-none the best community there is. I'm constantly forced to reevaluate things about life and myself, and it keeps me thinking.

I can't remember where it was I got linked here, but it was some miscellaneous porn link board, not Fark. It just said "Titty Board" and i said Ohhhhhhhh yeah!

As a writer, i've found no better place to say what I want to say in any quantity. The mods and admins do a superb job of policing the boards, and it keeps the harmony of the TFP to that of a symphony orchestra.

Congrats to all who make it what it is, you are all wonderful, wonderful people.

hotdogg 12-05-2003 07:53 PM

I love Fark...Thats how I found TFP...I belong to a few professional forums as well as a few listserves but TFP is for fun and amusement, not to mention the fantastic cross section of people and ideas.
