I think I'm catching on here... I (emphasis) need web space to host it. I can't just run out and get some can I. Maybe it's time to think about it. I dunno. I guess problably not.

After fighting with the camera for a while, it's an old one, it works. That's hunky dory, but HOLY COW it's a resouce hog. I don't get it. I'm going to go ask a question in the computer forum.

well i just packed up my webcam for 2weeks untill summer school starts... but once i get it back up i would very easily be able to do the hosting for it.. i might not have it up 24 hours... but i would definately be willing to have it up sometimes...

Does anyone know the best web cam I can get for the cheapest money? I've been looking around and I don't want to buy a cheap one and have it be a piece o' crap! I've been looking at e bay and don't know what to get.... help

logitech cams are great.
for around a hundred bucks you can get very good quality images
you can also get the lower priced logitechs, which are fine

I found free hosting, but I don't know the diff between uploading and streaming. Does anyone know where I can get free/cheap ($5) hosting?

OK.. I have 10k megs of hosting space, is this going to be enough.. I have an intel pro webcam..

all you need is 40 Kb of space maximum, it's not that great of a requirement. If your ISP gives you free web space (i know they all used to) then you're set. Bandwidth is another issue.. but the maximum image size is usually 20K, I dont imagine that adding up to more than 100 MB per month at VERY HIGH usage.

OK.. I'll see what I can do about getting it "up".. LOL

im i singed up...... once you have your hosting (make shure you have FTP access) Great software for uploading pics @ regular intervals is visionsGS PE thats what i use http://www.visiongs.com its good stuff .......

a few rules apply though name your pic accordingly EG mine would be named cheese.jpg you get the idea. secondly no explicit pitcures (no cock/tits shots please) my host will shut me down if they find out i have porn on their servers. if ppl do post noughty pics i will have to shut this down, i am doing this out of the my love for tfp and for camportals. PLEASE dont ruin this for every one treat my server with the same respect as you do TFP.

Sorry, I'm new to this. :)

Once I get a USB hub so I can hook up all my stuff at once, I'll set one up. No guarantees that It will be pointed at me 24/7, but it'll be running most of the time.

streaming takes up bandwitdh for the webcam user and needs to be on 24/7 in order for it to work.. that's simply not feasible.

interval uploading is best for pages like this. if you wanna do a 'live show' through a streaming feed, then you can set that up and schedule it, but I would like to give people an image to look at any time they click the link.

Ah, I see what you are saying now. So the camera takes a pic every 90 sec and refreshes?

Is there a way to line up images or do you actually have to be there in front of the cam all the time?

The cam takes a pic whenever I want it to (maybe specifically, maybe once a day, maybe every 30 seconds), and uploads it to my webspace.

The page refreshes every 90/20 seconds on the off-chance that the picture has been updated that recently.

How about I hook up another cam, and put it behind me. Then you can see two sides of me.. Or perhaps an "under the desk" cam.. Noooooo... I wouldn't do that..

Any Mac people got recommendation wrt which cam to get? I'm looking with lust at the Firewire-based ones.

Up to six. I'm on a bad loser suck computer right now which would explain my sudden lack of posting. Well, the bigger problem is not the computer but the fact that I'm on dial up and not my nice network that I'm used to so it's just hard to browse. Good idea, Hal.

Question: do cams have to be

• available at all times?
• hosted on Cheese's server?

Your cam is available when you want it to be. Whenever you log into your pic uploading software, it will become available for the public to view.

When you close down your software, it automatically uploads the last image it caught and displays that until you return again.

Of course you don't HAVE to host your cam on cheese's server, but it's free so why not?

Because I've already got web hosting and there are restrictions on what he's allowed to have available on his hosting site.

Feel free to use your own server then. :)

I'm waiting for them to get back to me, just in case there are issues. I've ordered a couple of webcams, one as a gift.

Between us i8 and I have at least one web cam and web hosting. It would be far more interesting to have it set up at his place - unless you all want to see my six year old pick his nose and listen to my nine year old fart. I'll see what i8 has to say about it when I talk to him later.

Webcam How-To

Any digital camera will work as long as it is seen by your capture software.
Inexpensive Logitech cams (from 60 – 100 dollar range are perfect).
Install the webcam software with as few options as possible.
You’ll be using another program for uploading your images.

Download webcam software, such as:

Chillcam from www.chillcam.com

or Webcam32 from www.webcam32.com

A trial version is available here:

Install the software.

Settings:

You will be uploading (via FTP) still images at intervals (not streaming) to a server.

Ignore the software that came with the cam and use the webcam software you downloaded.

Start the webcam software with the cam connected.
The software should see the cam – recognize it – and display a cam image.
If it doesn’t

For Webcam32:
Go to file menu and select the camera as input

For Chillcam:
Go configure > Inputs > and select your cam as input device.

Now configure your FTP settings.
You are sending to an FTP Host (server)
It has an IP address of this sort: 123.456.789.123
It has an FTP login with a:
Username: xxxxx
Password: xxxxx

You will need to know the directory and filename you are sending to:
Such as “directory/filename.jpg”

You’ll be setting your image size at 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high
Your upload time can be 60 seconds

For Webcam32
Use the Setup Wizard. It will step you through the setup process.

For Chillcam:
Go to Configure and input the settings as requested.

Select Main Event and click on “Enabled” “FTP” and “Capture 1”

OK
You should be good to go.

NOTE:
I’ll be editing this for clarity as the questions come in.
It’s intended as a way to get you started from scratch.

well, finally got my webcam installed and running, just doing the last coupla tests b4 it's all happy... old cam, should even be able to work on XP, but I tricked it ^_^

okay... i need to know. what's the dealie with the cheesecams? are they dead for good, and if so, are there any other generous souls who would be willing to throw up a smalls place for us to host our random images?

I have an Intel Pro webcam, cost me $50 CDN for an OEM version, great cam!

I don't have a webcam and I don't really care about anyone watching me but i've watched a few guys jackoff on cam. It's a real turn on for me.

I haven't read thru all these posts yet but you can set up your cam on the yahoo instant messenger and invite people to watch. Doesn't cost a thing.
