How did you come up with your username?

Any sort of significant meaning to it or just something you threw together at the last minute?

I think I was burning some sandalwood att. I love wood incense. So 'Woods' just popped into my head. As far as the 'Ð' is concerned, I mess around with hacker text (zomg,) every so often. Liked the way the Ð looked in the name so I just kept it. It basically took me about 6 minutes to finalize a username for this forum.

Vigilante 12-17-2009 10:58 PM

Mine is based off a theme concerning my favorite writer, Andrew Vachss.

Daniel_ 12-17-2009 11:36 PM

Mine is my name. Spoofs search engines. If you're called "OMGWTF1990FTW" you'll probably find google picks up everything you think is private (witness the recent searching of usernames on the missing condom thread).

flat5 12-18-2009 05:32 AM

flat5 is a music interval. It refers to the tritone. It may be considered the basis of western harmony. There is much one could say about the tritone!

The_Jazz 12-18-2009 06:23 AM

I thought I'd told this story elsewhere but don't remember exactly where. We might have had a thread about it someplace, but it looks like it's buried. Which means that a new one is probably in order.

Mine's one version of a college nickname that went through about 7 permutations involving a mispelling of my real name at an indoor track meet coupled with Will Smith's populatity. It originally was Jazz Viner (who placed 3rd in the 1000M while I was dead last; injuries and the wrong distance did not make me a happy guy) but eventually evolved into The Jazz by graduation.

This is one of only two forums where I use this name. Everywhere else, it's one of 3 or 4 others.

Craven Morehead 12-18-2009 06:50 AM

self explanatory :D

Actually, its a little deeper than meets the eye. Many years ago, I wrote various names on adhesive name tags that have "Hello, I'm" printed on them before a few of us went to a strip club. "Hello, I'm Miles Long" "Hello, I'm Craven Morehead" My best friend Jim was Craven Morehead. A dancer totally bought into it and thought that was his real name. It became a longstanding joke after that. A few years after that, Jim was killed in a plane crash. So in part my name is in tribute to Jim, that very funny moment at a strip club and also, who doesn't crave more head?

You know, until you explained it, I didn't get it. And I've been reading your posts for how long now? Facepalm.

I guess you're not a coward after all. ;)

LoganSnake 12-18-2009 07:05 AM

I had to come up with a nickname for mPlayer (multiplayer service that came before Heat.net and gamespy) when I started playing Quake 2 online in 1999. LoganSnake is a combination of names Gabe Logan and Solid Snake of Syphon Filter and Metal Gear games respectively. I'm not as much into video games as I used to be, but the name has been used as my alias since that time for pretty much everything other than a few select sites.

LordEden 12-18-2009 07:27 AM

Back when I was 12/13 when I first had to come up with a username for AOL 3.0, I went through a dozen of them that never stuck. I used to read Wizard alot (Magic the Gathering was my drug of choice back then), so when I saw an expansion for a CCG called Lord of Eden, I thought it was cool sounding. I was lordofeden for awhile, but then I shortened it to lordeden. I have various variants of the name; LordEden, LostEden, LostChildofEden, DarkEden. It was never really based on a religious subtext, tho some people think it is.

gather round and I shall tell all of you (some of you again) how the name guccilvr (guccilover) came into existence. It's a grand tale full of enchantment and betrayal.

It all started when I was 17. When I was 17 I was a super jock. I had multiple offers for scholarships to Div I. schools for multiple sports. I was a god. One of my good friends was similar to me in that he had some offers to play for Div. I schools but he was always the second or third pick. He was a friend but had a bit of jealousy.

Anyway, this friend of mine also had a mother. His mother was affluent and had cash. I don't know if it was her husbands cash or what, but not only did she have a nice bankroll, she was HOTT. HOTTTT. Can you hear the words sizzle?? Well, I was over at this friends house quite a bit and would always flirt (harmlessly) with the mom. She seemed to enjoy the attention.

One day, I was over at her house, when, she came out wearing what was described as a dress and her heels. This chick always seemed to wear high heels. She asked how she looked and I made some inane senior in high school comment about "I'd do you". I don't really know how or what happened next, but, I do remember ending up in the bedroom with this lady. She was a freak. She wore her heels which incidentally happened to be Gucci brand.

Fast forward a few days later, and word somehow got out that I had banged this dude's mom. Naturally, I had to have a few fights with the kid because he wasn't fond of me fuckin' his mom. Go figure right? So some of the guys started callin' me guccilover because she was my gucci lover who wore gucci heels.

That concludes this tale. If I think of more details I'll add them, but for now, I have to go and buy the wife some heels ;)

Grancey 12-18-2009 09:35 AM

Several years ago Red started talking about this TFP stuff, interesting threads, cool people, etc.... He kept telling me I should take a look, so one day I did. He was standing there and said I had to pick a user name if I wanted to post anything. I had no intention of posting and no intention of browsing around for longer than Red was standing there watching me. But, to make Red happy I chose a user name. One of the cats was sitting there so I said, okay, I'll use his name....Grancey. Several years later I'm still browsing around, I have posted, and the cat is still with us. I thought about changing it, but that is a mind-blowing process. However, if the cat should move on to the great beyond it could get a little creepy.

CM.....never occurred to me.

I try to utilize the search function as often as I can when making new threads. Bumping a 2 year old thread just didn't make sense to me. Glad you agree :o.

Plan9 12-18-2009 09:45 AM

Okay, I'll bite:

What's the point of starting a brand new thread on the exact same topic simply because of time? Doesn't it lend to continuity to just keep rolling?

That and I don't want the weapons forum to have 19 threads on "shotgun for home defense" because a year went by since the last post in the old one.

Just trying to save you a bit of grief, my dear, from the curmudgeons that will scurry from under the woodwork with "geez, use the search button next time, would ya?"

Plan9, if we started to get multiple threads on the same topic, we have this handy "merge thread" option that we can use. If you see some that need that, then we'll happily use that tool. Personally, my threshold is 2 years for a thread that's beyond resurrecting unless there's something noteworthy within it (generally Hall of Fame material). But that's me and not really a staff directive or anything.

wooÐs 12-18-2009 09:56 AM

I know I really don't care to catch up on 16 pages of a 2 year old thread just to keep on top of things. Starting fresh is a better option imo. If a thread is less than a year old though, I'll bump it.

I didn't plan to hang around. I was only visiting TFP for the porn. After a while, the rules changed and you had to log in to reach the porn. I didn't want to use my regular username, and I had just read a guide to creating usernames on highly popular sites where all the good ones were taken. So, I combined my favorite color and my favorite flavor, and Redlemon was created.

I always thought about 'stealing' people's unique nicknames and using them all over the web. But, I'm very lazy, and overworked, this is the only forum I've actually worked on with any ability, and will likely be the single one I maintain. It's been three years, and TFP has only me, and myself, it. So, your nicknames are safe, I guess.

"Jetstream": jet + stream

two words combined into one to create my original username; it wasn't until later that I learned that 'jetstream' was already one word, albeit,
compound (what, I'm no meteorologist). Also, it might have seeped into my subconscious because when I registered, I was playing Gran Turismo 4, and I think there was a jetstream stage in there somewhere. I changed it within the year to coincide with roachboy's birthday, but SMeth delayed my name change by a few days, so the (subtle) joke was most likely lost. It is derived thriceover from the film in which describes my waking/unwaking life, the previous prefix attached to my username (Jet), and an offhanded comment by Sharon in which she playfully referred to me as 'Jetty'.

Yeah, I've also accepted that the new nick is a feminine French form, and there is no accurate instances of Le Jetées, only Las (what, I'm no Frenchman). This too, was a joke (perhaps unto only myself) in that I am a person who is, inherently, of a dual nature —good, bad, eloquent, concise, male, female. Guy who likes to procrastinate, but cannot shake off his perfectionism. Pronouncing my nick as 'Jetay' (even tho it is "technically" correct) when I silently want you to easily think and mutter unto yourself:
that person is 'Jetty'.

-- It's a marvel I was ever a good businessman in a previous life, considering I can't even compress was what three thoughts into no less than three paragraphs.

Meditrina 12-18-2009 06:51 PM

meditrina is my 2nd name on TFP, I think, could be my 3rd. For this one, I searched the internet for something related to wine and fairies. Meditrina is the Roman goddess of wine and health. I liked it, so I used it. I wanted something that was me, not my kids and not something I was because of my Ex.

I think it goes:

sportswidow05 -> Gaia -> Meditrina

though I could be missing one, or thinking of someone else entirely. :surprised:

Fremen 12-18-2009 11:47 PM

My uncle was into watching wrestling way back when, and he nicknamed me after one of his favorites, One-Man Gang.
When I got on the internet I used that with an 8 on the end, then shortened it to Omg8.
Then AOL-speak came about and I decided to change usernames.

I had either just read or was reading Dune when I picked mine. (or, according to Charlie, watched the movie ;))
There are other Fremen out there in the interwebs. GH will search them out and absorb them, eventually.

onodrim 12-19-2009 03:04 PM

onodrim is the Elvish word for Ent in the Lord of the Rings, so it displays my geekiness, love of nature, and appreciation of intelligence/wisdom all in one. :) Also, I was still a recovering conservative when I signed up, and I wanted something I had never used anywhere else lest I be tracked down and associated with *gasp* boobies!

MSD 12-23-2009 09:13 AM

Back when I was in middle school and high school, I was a huge NiN fan, and I used MrSelfDestruct as a username. It was mainly the name I used in my warez and hacking circles. I hardly resemble the person I was in high school, and I left the warez and hacking groups after getting higher in the ranks and finding out what the sources were for our pirated content and funding for server space, bandwidth, etc. The name was meaningless to me at that point, and I stuck with it on TFP for a few years out of habit before asking for it to be shortened. It doesn't hurt that it's also something that stays buried in search results due to other high profile uses of the acronym.

Cheater 12-26-2009 09:09 PM

A friend talked about a site that she visited, but didn't want me to know about. This was a place where she could talk freely, and thought I would be upset with things she said here.
One night I googled her name and it took me to a post on TFP. While I was pleased with what I read, I was afraid that someone else who could be hurt by the post could also find it. I was upset with myself for "cheating" the system, afraid that she would be upset, but I had to let her know what I had done. Believe me, that was difficult. A lot of apologies, and promises that I wouldn't comment on anything said here. But at the same time, she was thankful for letting her know how easy it is for someone to follow you.

Salem 12-27-2009 12:00 PM

When I was younger I was pretty into Paganism and I was obsessed with the Salem witch trails. And my friend and I once started writting this amazing story, and one of the main characters was Salem, and I've loved it as a name ever since. So voila. Username.

fogglethorpe 12-27-2009 06:16 PM

My username is something I made up as a kid. It is simply the dumbest thing I could think of.

noodle 12-27-2009 06:29 PM

this is my second nickname here. hence, uncle phil and fly referring to me as "fred" from time to time. i just kinda outgrew that name. the former title was "fredweena the wunderslut" from college as a joke because i hadn't been with anyone at that point. only i knew the second half, so i ended up getting monkie's help to change me to noodle. it's actually from the gorillaz' noodle, but it works too since i have to use my noodle all the damn time between school and work. it's funny because i'm in people's cell phones and email directories as "noodle" with majority of my friends. :D

bazkitcase5 12-27-2009 09:34 PM

I tend to have a hard time coming up with user names that I like, so I came up with this one a long time ago and have used it ever since

Green Day was one of my favorite bands growing up and Basket Case was one of my favorite songs - so I put it together and changed a few letters so it would be at least a little more unique

ironpham 12-27-2009 11:36 PM

mine's a bit persinal, but to explain it in a way that i don't have to go in to detail it's a way of doing something good after a long hard day, and releasing any negative energy you may have built up. so sweet release. there you have it.

Studentech 09-20-2010 02:22 PM

Second name here, as the first one was banned. Because I was underage.
Studentech was my log in name when I was the student technician at my high school. I had a great amount of fun having all the knowledge and the power to block kids from the internet. One time I had a student direct me to a shock site, he didn't have internet for a week :P

The other name, Rubby (still banned) surprisingly, has nothing to do with rubbing anything. I'm somewhat vague, but I think it's a fudgery of my initials, RB.

My first name begins with a G... I was given the name G~man as a call-sign when I first started flying, and has stuck ever since. I use it on numerous different websites I frequent, although some do not allow the ~.

Studentech was my log in name when I was the student technician at my high school. I had a great amount of fun having all the knowledge and the power to block kids from the internet. One time I had a student direct me to a shock site, he didn't have internet for a week :P

that sounds fun!

:)

i'd love that kind of power, but at the same time i may be a bit easy to get past.

back at my school ages ago, we had a really strict administrator who would ban people off the internet for really stupid reasons. 1 time, someone sent a threatening email around campus, and we all got banned off the net because he didon't know who did it!. eventually he found out who it was, and they were expelled from school for causing the rest of us grief.

Yep---I fly helicopters for a living, primarily contracted to the US Forest Service. I started at age 18 when I joined the Air Force, but was not a pilot---I flew in the back operating mission equipment hunting submarines. As the cold war ended, I got out in 1990, and paid for my own helicopter training at a civilian flight school. I then worked for the school as an instructor for a while, and have since done lots of different things ranging from flying for NBC in San Francisco, a sheriff department, tours in Hawaii for 7 years, and have been flying fire contracts full time now for just over five years.....

Nah...Hate every minute of it... Just kiddin...

No I love it, but the lifestyle is not for everyone..I live in hotels for about 9 months each year, but I do get to fly all over the country. For the last 4 years or so, I have kept a picture blog of sorts of everything I do with the helicopter..who is called "LaFawnduh". You can view it here:

My present name is an anagram of my daughter's name. Also, it sounds like the latin
for love. I like the two ideas together.
My old name (Grolsch) had to do with old habits.

She is named after Kip's "love interest" in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. The movie was filmed in SE Idaho, where I am based for the summer fire season. All of the helicopters I work with are named---it helps the crews who we fly treat them with respect...rather than just a piece of machinery. They are: LaFawnduh, Layla, Lucy, Mary Jane and Hannah. The gnome I put on the dash is "Timothy" after Timothy Leary, because he is on the trip of a lifetime...for a gnome anyway.

I stay in so many, I like Marriott suites for long term stays. Holiday Inns have the most comfortable beds, but kind of liked the hotel I stayed in while on a fire in Tallahassee FL.....forget the name of it---but they upgraded us to suites.

its my gamer tag, for like 13 years now

helix_luco 10-27-2010 01:46 PM

Helix Lucorum is the latin name of an edible variety of land snail, i shortened it so it wouldn't be quite as unwieldy.

Mine is a combination of my initials and the name of my beloved pitbull who has passed......was the best dog a girl could ever wish for.....

Cavi Mike 10-28-2010 04:52 PM

I put a sticker on my Cavalier's windshield that said "100% Cavi Hit" (I saw it on a tape case) and my friends started calling me Cavi Mike. To this day I'm called Cavi, many think it's my middle or last name.

http://cavimike.com/CAVI.JPG

Oh, and to quell any theories that my name has to do with that CAVI clothing line that came out a few years ago(2004 to be exact) I was dubbed Cavi in 1998. I don't have proof I was Cavi in '98 but I do have proof I was Cavi before 2004.

Chris is my first name. Win is the first 3 letters of my last name. The # 8 is my lucky number that has a story attached to it. Sorry its a personal story, chances are you will not believe it anyway.

Anxst 10-29-2010 12:15 PM

When in high school, I was writing poetry that was, amazingly, decent enough to get published. It wasn't bad, but tended to run with the standard angst-filled themes of young adulthood. A few friends of mine started referring to me as "The Angsty Poet", and I started using Anxst as my handle in IRC rooms. (I used the X to differentiate from the normal word, and to help my family with pronunciation. Many of them are non-native English speakers.) It's been my username for almost any public forum I've ever engaged in on the 'net.

Cat_Eyes 11-02-2010 05:43 AM

I was lurking and read this page. Redlemon offered ideas of combining two words, then FuriousAvatar's avatar captured my imagination of an eye~ which I've been trying to draw in a Steampunk style all day yesterday~ and this was the name I settled on.

Nothing Wow-ish, no lovely back story.
My other site names were initials and numbers... look at me though, coming out of my shell and being creative. Fab! :D

Redlemon 11-02-2010 04:47 PM

Welcome Cat_Eyes, thanks for noticing me, and don't capsize!

Cat_Eyes 11-02-2010 05:47 PM

Thanks for the suggestion on how to make a name, Redlemon. It's so much better then xXME13Xx I was considering. ;)

FuriousAvatar 11-04-2010 11:14 PM

Glad I could be of some inspiration, Cat_Eyes =)
