Croatia

I'm not sure if I'm starting this thread in the right place, since I'm a new member...

I'm from Croatia (if you don't know where that is, you can find out on Wikipedia: Croatia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). I'm here to talk with people from outside my country, and also to practice my English :) .

So, if you want to know something about Croatia, please ask - I'll be happy to answer :)

Hi,

The food is fine, as far as I'm concerned. Most of the dishes have meat as the main ingredient, and sometimes fish. Italian food is also very popular. Is there anything in particular you would like to know about food?

Well, he is popular, but I wouldn't say that he's a national hero. Football players are far more popular (when they are winning, of course :D ), and also sportsman and sportswomen like Ivan Ljubičić (tennis player), Janica Kostelić (skiing - she was extremely popular a few years ago), and some others. But, if you asked people in Croatia to choose their national hero - I believe Ante Gotovina would be chosen (a general from the war 15 years ago, now on trial in Den Haag).

That's in Italy - not very far away, but still a different country.

Halx 09-23-2008 05:35 PM

I used to work with a guy from Croatia. He sounded like Kermit. We stole him from you though, he's a US citizen now.

dlish 09-23-2008 05:47 PM

followed by goran ivanisevic

jorgelito 09-24-2008 01:15 AM

A lot of educated young people left Croatia over the past few decades, which is not surprising given the situation in the country. What were you working on - was it some kind of a project or just a regular job?

I like all of the coast, not just Dalmatia :).

Were there massive riots when the Waterpolo team didn't do well in the Beijing olympics??

Mr Smith 09-24-2008 07:32 AM

No... why should there be riots because of a sports team?!

Really? Where are you from - does 'NC' mean North Carolina? What kind of riots?

Occasionally, there are some fights after matches of local football teams, but nothing really serious… maybe a few broken shop windows or damaged public transportation vehicles.

Glory's Sun 09-24-2008 08:01 AM

it happens in alot of major cities here.. especially during world series and super bowls. Overturned cars, fires in the streets, looting..

don't worry it doesn't happen in nc.. most teams here suck.. and when the Tarheels try to do it they fail miserably.

Poppinjay 09-24-2008 08:06 AM

uh, Duke?

And you have to love when ECU kids stormed the field after beating WVU. Pirates know how to tear up the town.

Glory's Sun 09-24-2008 08:09 AM

ok well ECU and App State kids know how to do it right..

but maybe that's a different thread ;)

go Devils :)

Jozrael 09-24-2008 08:10 AM

Nothing like that ever happens here. Also, we have a very strict law against vandalism during and after sporting events… Thugs found guilty of vandalism after matches are fined excessively and are banned from going to other matches for a few years… some even must report to their police station before each match!

people here will be jailed and all that too.. doesn't seem to stop them much though.. although, it's not nearly as bad here as it is in some places where the hooligans go wild.

dlish 09-24-2008 05:02 PM

wasnt there riots at the australian open tennis championship about 2 years ago between the croation and serbian fans?

Mr Smith 09-24-2008 11:49 PM

I think there were, but I'm not sure... Such events seldom pass without some idiots causing trouble... I also hear, for example, that a few Croats got arrested this year in Austria during the European football championship... but still, there were no major incidents.

Hello Mr. Smith, and welcome!
As to Croatia, I dated a lovely young Croatia software engineer a few years back. Her Dad hated the fact she wasn't dating a Croat, but isn't that pretty normal for all fathers about their daughter's worldwide?
As to riots directly caused by sports, I am embarrassed by my city in that regard.
I'm in Montreal, Canada. Hockey is our sporting passion, verging on obsession, quite frankly. When our local team, known as the Habs, won in the 1st round of the playoffs some morons rioted, burnt cop cars, broke windows, etc...
Interestingly, the vast majority of those arrested didn't even see the game.

Hi,

what a coincidence - my girlfriend wants to move to Canada in a couple of years :)

As for the riots connected with sporting events... some people visit matches to see the game, and some are just looking for trouble, since they don't know what else to do in their pitiful lives...
