Hudson teens return from unauthorized European jaunt

HUDSON, N.H. -- The vacation is over for the globe-trotting Hudson teens who hopped a plane to Rome last week.

Last night, the European adventure came to an end for Marc Lebourdais, 17, and Corwin Lagueux, 16, who flew to Italy without their parents' permission. Police believe the teens took a flight from Logan Airport to Newark and then to Miami, flying to Milan from there. Yesterday, U.S. marshals escorted the pair onto a return flight.

"One of the steps we took was to ensure they were actually on the flight," said Hudson police Sgt. Charles Dyac.

Lebourdais and Lagueux landed at JFK International Airport in New York City about 6 p.m., aboard Alitalia Flight 610. Dyac said the teens' parents were picking them up and suspected the parents had purchased the tickets to fly their sons home.

After the boys made it through U.S. customs and finally were reunited with their parents, the parents contacted Hudson police with the good news about 7:45 p.m.

That conversation was very brief, but the parents did express how important it was to them that the boys were finally home safe, police said.

Police say the teens voluntarily responded to the U.S. Embassy in Italy.

"I think the parents' influence had a lot to do with them stopping this joy-riding spree that they're having," Dyac said. "Money could have been an issue, but we won't know that until we sit down and speak with them."

Both boys have profiles on the Web site Myspace.com, with several comments from friends on both profiles.

While the friends' comments were mainly supportive initially, several friends had posted yesterday and Tuesday to ask the boys to come home, and come home safe.

One friend, "Jerome," who posted on Lagueux's profile Monday, saying "You guys pump me up so much," posted again on Tuesday saying "Corwin, get your red face home, brotha. you can't be failing classes left and right."

The Web site showed that both boys had logged into their profiles at some point on Tuesday.

Another friend, "Imran Mahmud," posted Monday on Lebourdais' profile, saying "You're living your dreams, guys ... Europe, adventure, media, international manhunt by Interpol ... but make sure you stay safe to reflect back on it. Be safe, come home when you're ready to."

Police say they've seen cases where teenagers have run off for destinations such as Florida or New York, but nothing quite like this.

"What really sensationalizes this case is, one, that they went so far overseas, and two, this story follows so soon after the juvenile who went to Iraq," Dyac said.

Police don't know yet if this is a copycat incident of 16-year-old Farris Hassan of Florida, who traveled to Iraq recently without the permission of his parents.

Hudson police worked with Interpol, the international police agency, to communicate with Italian authorities. Interpol cooperated as best as it could, Dyac said, but finding two individuals in a country the size of Italy is not an easy task.

For now, no charges are being filed against the teens. Police say this is a "status," or runaway, offense. If Lagueux and Lebourdais were 18, the police wouldn't even be looking into it. Because the teens are still minors, they are more restricted.

While the pair may not have to worry about criminal charges coming from police, they will have to answer to their parents.

"I don't even know if they're sure themselves how they're going to handle it," said Dyac, who spoke with the parents briefly. "They strike me as good people who are going to act appropriately -- no unnecessary bludgeoning."

Lagueux and Lebourdais also have some explaining to do for Alvirne High's administration. Principal Bryan Lane said school officials consider unique situations like this on a case-by-case basis, so the fate of the two students has yet to be determined.

"There's a team of people that would come together and decide what is the most appropriate action to take, like the Guidance Department and other administrators," Lane said.

Police weren't certain yesterday if the teens and their families would be coming home late last night, or would spend the night in New York and return today. Police hope to speak with Lagueux and Lebourdais today.

What's the worst thing you ever did as a teenager, and did you get away with it? WhenI was 16 - I was grounded for something -- but I had Grateful Dead tickets -- so.. I snuck outof the house- took the train from Connecticut into NYC (with 2 friends) went tot he concert- took the train home -- and on my way back into the house-- fell - and sprained my ankle...oops... (My parents got the true story of my ankle sprain when I was 35...

I once snuck out of the house to - why else? - meet up with a girl. And being the rebel that she was, she stood me up for fear of being caught. Oh well.

Not the worst thing I've ever done, but the only typical act of teenage rebellion I can think of that woudnt've netted me a criminal record had I been caught.

I don't tend to do bad things, but I suppose in the last 5 years I've successfully crashed 2 of my parents computers doing one thing or another. Not purposely by any means, I'm just very very unlucky with computers. I never got in trouble for it, though, since it's not like I was sitting there throwing magnets or anything at it.

The only other rebellious thing I've done is in the process of being done. I have 10 bottles of liquor sitting in the trunk of my car ready to be taken to college and thus far no one knows about it, but I'm sure if they found out at school or at home, there would be hell to pay, so let's hope that I don't get caught.

Oh, man. Back in the day -- the '60s, the '70s -- what you _really_ wanted your parents to do for a living was have a professional job at an airline. Because in those plush times, that meant _free standby passage anywhere the airline flew_ for any member of the family. I knew kids -- and I mean teenagers, brother and sister -- who'd hop a flight from California to London on a Friday night, sleep on the plane, bop around London all day Saturday and the catch the red eye back home. With their parent's permission, too, because as long as they were anywhere near an airline office, they were connected to home and help.

Rebellion or good, clean fun? It's all a matter of context.

That would be nice, just to head to the airport, pick a destination and fly there without anbody knowing where you are.

Back when I must've been 18, one weekend I took the car and went into Montana and stayed at a cheap hotel in Great Falls and hanged around the town. The whole time, my Dad thought I was visiting my girlfriend in Lethbridge at the time.

my parents didn't have any computers!!! :lol:

now as for booze... there's a reason why I cut my teeth on gin. It's the same colour as water...

The first concert I ever went to was Roxette when I was 13 or 14 (don't remember!) and I went with my best friend. I told my parents that my friend's mom would go to the concert with us, because I knew I wouldn't be allowed to go otherwise, but in reality she only dropped us off and picked us up afterwards. My parents still don't know... ssh!
Oh, and having my first beer in a seedy joint in town, and being all panicky and eating breath mints so the parents won't find out their little girl has been drinking! Ah, to be young again! :)

Getting absolutely smashed 10th grade through graduation. Amazing how little it took then.

Lots of sneaking out. Lots of general teenage annoyances. Vandalism. And I was a GOOD kid.

When I was 17 & friend was 16 (1965) we went to Mission Bay, San Diego, Ca. from Van Nuys in his step-father's car.
Two cops were waiting off an alley with a stop sign behind a telephone pole. They saw we were out of towners, under age, car not in our name and threw us in a juv. jail. Parents had to come and get us out. They were quite upset and made us pay all gas and food expences.

Damn police. However, I learned to stay out of jail, if possible.

I paid off my sister and the housekeeper from the proceeds I made from my parties.

yes i had a number of money making schemes in high school, from parties to report card modification services. I'd modify your report card for the gratification of your parents but not hack into the school.

parents found out about that one because I had gotten put on probation when someone else put themselves on the honor roll and I fessed up that I could and have done it.
