Postage rates Increase -- starting today

Postage Rates Rise
Quote:
AP) -- It will cost Americans 2 cents more to mail a letter starting Sunday. First-class postage rises to 39 cents for the first ounce.

The increase follows legislation requiring the Postal Service to place $3 billion in an escrow account this year.

Another rate boost is likely next year to cover rising costs for the agency. Stamp prices last went up in June 2002.

Many rates, such as parcel post and advertising mail, vary by distance or whether the material is presorted.

Rate changes taking effect, including some estimates for typical mailed items:
  • Postcard, and each additional ounce in first class, up 1 cent to 24 cents.
Letter to Canada or Mexico, 1 ounce, up 3 cents to 63 cents.
Letter to other foreign countries, 1 ounce, up 4 cents to 84 cents.
Priority Mail, 1 pound, up 20 cents to $4.05.
Express Mail, 8 ounces, up 75 cents to $14.40.
Certified mail, up 10 cents to $2.40.
Money orders up 5 cents to 95 cents.
Delivery confirmation, up 5 cents to 60 cents.
Weekly news magazine, 5.8 ounces, presorted, up 1 cent to 18.5 cents.
Household magazine, 13.8 ounces, presorted, up 1.5 cents to 28.9 cents.
Small nonprofit publication, presorted, up 1.4 cents to 28.3 cents.
My public service post for the day - I just mailed off a handful of birthday cards this morning - NO CLUE that postage rates increased... Damnity damn damn damn...

Was this a news item and I missed it... ** note to self - watch more than just ESPN...

I knew that they were going up. I found out by way of a flyer posted at the Post Office, when I was running a few errands last month. I did, however, forget that it was today.

Went to the post office this morning to purchase $.02 stamps as I have plenty of $.37 stamps left. Guess what? The PO was sold out of $.02 and $.01 stamps. Sold over 100,000 last week!!! No idea when a new supply is to arrive.

I don't care that postal rates have increased, however what I am sick of is the fact that magazine corporations get their products shipped for 28.9 cents. This covers things up to 13.8 ounces. However, if the typical person wants to mail a letter weighing 13.8 ounces it has to be mailed priority at a cost of over $4. Fucking bullshit. They need to make it equal for all.

I don't mean to rock the boat here, but wouldn't something like this topic be better off posted in the US regional board?

2 cents more - omg - how can we handle it?! It's the postal service - how much longer will they be allowed to survive? People bitch about using the service, but they don't realize how much they use it. The postal service has become a convenience.
