Poem of the week - #2

Here's a slightly more controversial one...



This be the verse by Philip Larkin

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself

It is true -- our parents "fuck" us up and we "fuck" up our kids. But I believe most parents do the best they can and no one means to mess up their kids. Look up the bright side, our parents give us a good excuse for therapy - lol.

Notwithstanding the fact that I have a great relationship with my folks, I love this poem. I know several people who can relate to it directly.

I especially like the imagery and the last two lines really seem to pack a punch. Kinda depressing, really...

Awesome poem. Try as they might, they still screw us over. I look at my parents and say "Wow, that's what I've been influenced by my whole life... Dang." Yes, I love my parents, but they are screwy and they know it.
