tfp chat poll

Do you go into the Chat room (#tfp) and if so.....Why? If not...Why Not?

ryfo 08-30-2005 04:10 PM

no i dont not really sure how I am in australia so sometimes the timings tricky

tecoyah 08-30-2005 04:11 PM

heh....there is pretty much Always someone in there...making an ass of themselves

Usually me

ngdawg 08-30-2005 04:13 PM

You had no option for 'live there-have no life', so I took 'habitually'....

Lasereth 08-30-2005 04:14 PM

Where's the "every now and then" option? I go in there from time to time, but it's not because I have to, and it's not like I hate it or anything. I'd just rather post on TFP or play Battlefield 2 than carry on a live conversation.

Or me.

I'm there entirely too much.

Grasshopper Green 08-30-2005 04:18 PM

I go because I like to watch people make asses of themselves ;)

Elphaba 08-30-2005 04:18 PM

I've tried reinstalling mirc, but have yet to get back into chat since the recent problems. I was never a frequent visitor, but enjoyed visiting from time to time. I love Mal's trivia games.

fresnelly 08-30-2005 04:21 PM

Sure thing! I often don't post in the forums because better points have already been made, or I don't have the relevant experience to contribute. So I find the tfp Chat a great way to take part and get to know the community. You're all a real swell bunch!

Psycho Dad 08-30-2005 04:23 PM

I tried it, but I'm just an old dog not into new tricks. My boys, little sister-in-law and my nieces on the other hand... IMs, PMs, chat windows, telephone, TV, mp3 player... I don't know how they do it.

ShaniFaye 08-30-2005 04:26 PM

I usually go in when Dave's out of town....when he's here I just cant keep up with the conversation (and the 5 other yahoo convo's I've got going on at the same time) and whats going on on this board, and my board, and the wedding board Im on lol

Meditrina 08-30-2005 04:43 PM

I keep it open all day when I am at work, you all keep me company when I am not in the mood to get my work done. ahhh.. who am I kidding, I am in there every day because I just love it!

Yeah... i'm there constantly as well. And don't worry about the time... there are people there ALL the time. Just come in and say something, and then people will know you're there to chat.

GRAPE APE!! GRAPE APE!!

shesus 08-30-2005 05:10 PM

Well, I am a chat addict...
I like to go in and see what other people have to say. Always it can be quite entertaining!! Plus, I enjoy making an ass out of myself along with everyone else...er...everyone else does make an ass out of themselves...right? :hmm:

MageB420666 08-30-2005 05:16 PM

I would go to the chat room, except that somehow the university I'm at has blocked off IRC's, so I can't connect.

uncle phil 08-30-2005 05:16 PM

/me looks at it for the articles...

JumpinJesus 08-30-2005 05:29 PM

I'd like to spend more time in chat, but there's a rather large purple ape always in there and that kinda scares me.

I like watching you make an ass of yourself too. It's hot.

No, seriously...I spend more time in chat than is probably good for me :) Oh well. We've all got our vices.

Bacchanal 08-30-2005 05:39 PM

I was there for a while, but my ethernet card went out on my computer at home and I've had to rely on a friend's computer or the one at work, neither of which I really want to "chat" on.

kramus 08-30-2005 05:45 PM

I like to flirt with Mal there - but I only visit occassionally so as to keep the edge ;)

not feeling that it is a case of no better things to do, I didn't do the poll

Sultana 08-30-2005 05:59 PM

I'd like to, but haven't figured it out yet.
I'm a chat newbie. But I got some input in the appropriate forum, so hopefully that'll change soon.

Zephyr66 08-30-2005 06:25 PM

I go in sometimes, but ive actually only started a couple days ago. I'm usually on at 1-3 in the morning.

StanT 08-30-2005 06:37 PM

After dealing with customers and project managers all day, I look forward to a little adult conversation.

guess I gotta keep looking

that sound like me,

i've cruised in there a few times...

normally most people are set at (sleeping)

JStrider 08-30-2005 06:52 PM

I used to idle there 24/7... and then my university blocked irc and I havn't figured out how to get around it...

now I'm only in when I'm at home...

aberkok 08-30-2005 07:03 PM

Just checked it out for the first time! Awesome.

Just what I need... more of all you rascals...

Siege 08-30-2005 07:07 PM

I haven't a clue how to go about doing it. Perhaps I would if I knew how. This IRC or mIRC or whatever it's called stuff is too hi-tech for me. :p

JStrider 08-30-2005 07:16 PM

just messed with it again... if I connect on the regular ports it just times out...
when i use some of the ports for people on the firewall this is what it does

Code:

[22:16:36] * Connect retry #2 caladan.shadowfire.org (21)
-
[22:16:37] -Caladan.ShadowFire.ORG- *** Looking up your hostname...
-
[22:16:37] -Caladan.ShadowFire.ORG- *** Found your hostname (cached)
-
[22:16:37] -Caladan.ShadowFire.ORG- *** Checking ident...
-
[22:16:47] -Caladan.ShadowFire.ORG- *** No ident response; username prefixed with ~
-
[22:16:49] * Disconnected

anybody got any ideas for getting around the problem?

snowy 08-30-2005 07:21 PM

For those of you who say running mIRC is too complicated, try Trillian. Makes things a breeze to set up. :)

JumpinJesus 08-30-2005 07:22 PM

Sorry, JStrider, I'm just smart enough to click the chat link at the top of the page.

It is nice to see some new faces in there, though. Liven things up a bit so shesus doesn't have to keep playing strip trivia.

Yeah, thanks a lot tec. :p

onodrim 08-30-2005 08:26 PM

I always have chat running in the background, and as I have free time or just want a break, I drop in as I can. It's a fun place to "hang out," everyone should join in! :)

SecretMethod70 08-30-2005 09:40 PM

There is a TFP Chat Guide in Tilted Newbies. It walks you through setting up mIRC and XChat so you even have a choice of client :)

I always leave chat open and drop in whenever I notice something interesting going on.

EDIT: looks like the pics for the mIRC tutorial are no longer working. The XChat tutorial I added is still working however. I'm always open for suggestions to make it more clear :)

Daniel_ 08-31-2005 01:02 AM

I use the java pop up - not all the tme, but if I'm home on my own and fancy communicating with real people I stop by - but like Shanni, it can be hard to keep up with all the windows I have open - I'm a chat whore.

Pragma 08-31-2005 04:37 AM

I will (though don't hold me to a date) chat in there some time. I used to a few years ago, and then sort of fell off the whole IRC thing, but now that classes are starting back up, I need better ways to distract myself, so I'll probably try reinstalling xChat and giving it a go in the near future.

Redlemon 08-31-2005 04:58 AM

I voted "No, too shy", but the real answer is closer to "No, not my thing". I've never used IRC, IM, or any other instant-writing communication style. I prefer to read and respond at my own pace; I like the message-board style of communications.

While this is gernerally my take on things, I have found that I enjoy going in to this particular chat room from time to time... I am mostly too busy to visit but when I have a moment or two I like to pop in and say hi...

The difference for me, between TFP chat and other chats, is that I know most of the people in chat already. It's like popping into the pub for a quick one before heading home.

SiN 08-31-2005 05:21 AM

I like chat :)

if my computer's on, i'm likely in chat.
often just idling while doing other stuff, but sometimes i'll make an ass of myself ...
..er, sometimes i'll talk. yeah ;)

it is a good way to get to know people - it feels a bit closer to irl than the board.
more like 'talking' and less like posting.
since my 'social life' is currently pretty much all here, it helps me feel like less of a loser, i think :hmm:

we need more people in there! don't be shy, people, it's fun!

mandy 08-31-2005 05:42 AM

i've tried but i just dont seem to get on. i love chat rooms and i think its just as sin said "more like talking and less posting". not that the posting isnt cool and stuff but chat does make it seem "a little more closer".

and sin...you aint no loser, very insightful and you seem to know what you talking about...i'd love to chat to you.

Craven Morehead 08-31-2005 05:43 AM

No, but my reason wasn't listed. Not enough time.

rmarshall 08-31-2005 07:06 AM

"Not enough time" and "better things to do" are pretty much the same thing.

I have gone in occasionally and it varies. Either somebody is jabbering away about something I don't care about, or nobody is talking at all. It can seem like a waste of time.

I have had some good conversations and it's fun when people start posting links from the titty board and discussing them. Or there's some disaster to discuss, like Katrina. TFP members are mostly young kids, but they're spread all over and have varied experiences, so it can be very interesting.

tecoyah 08-31-2005 03:30 PM

He called me a kid.....sweet

Who you calling a young kid? (noting the 2 week difference in birthdays).

Elphaba 08-31-2005 04:02 PM

I want to be a kid again. Can I, please?

tecoyah 08-31-2005 04:08 PM

Tecoyah taps El on the ass with his Youth wand....there ya go Kiddo

snowy 08-31-2005 04:25 PM

I don't think any of my fellow chatters are really "kids." Heck, some of them HAVE kids.

Or me.... I've developed a habit of it.

laconic1 08-31-2005 08:32 PM

I drop in once in a while but usually I just lurk. I'm not very talkative in real life, and chat isnt much different for me.

tspikes51 08-31-2005 09:08 PM

I've been known to show up a time or two, maybe it's for the intrigue of being more personal with some of the fine members, maybe it's just to make an appearance. I'll probably start showing up more during my more boring classes.

TexanAvenger 08-31-2005 09:36 PM

I was scared, then it became a habit, now I'm busy and hope to bring it back to its former habitual glory... where's that option, tec?
