Everyones Fav Game (monopoly)

So here i am playing monopoly tonight with my girlfriend her my other friend and her boyfriend. its sad we are all over 20 and here we are playing this game. The game is going great we used some of our regular custom rules and went on our way.

Well my girlfriend decided she was going to quit, and so did the other female, and they refused to auction off the property instead they gave it to us randomly. (they put al their money in the middle 9 free parking and it was all good)

so then the guy and i are playing it is neck in neck and i land on free parking wowzers since it has almost 3500 in it. well i go to put hotels on all of my properties, but since there are no more houses left i cannot build hotels.

Now the 2 females and i have never played like that but the other guy got the rule book and said it says it right here.....

well i took the rule book and quoted 4 rules so he didnt win and everyone was dqed.

this brings me to the question

What rules do you use?

pattycakes 08-28-2005 06:07 PM

My families standard rules were

1. 500 if you land on free parking ( and if you have to pay the hospital it goes in there)
2. snake eyes you get 100 bucks
3. you dont have to have houses in the bank to build hotels. I mean come on who in the hel would build 4 houses at once to tear them down and put a hotel on top of it?
4. we never played that if you own all the properties you get double rent ( real rule)
5. you can buy what you want when you want, if someone lands on it and dosent buy it it goes up for auction
6. no getting out the rule book and quoting some stupid rule.

most of aqll i never read the rules because i was taught how to play the game my family way. argh

what are your special rules?

1. Free parking is all the monies paid in taxes (luxuory tax, get out of jail, whatever... went into free parking)
2. ,roll double three times in a row, you go to jail
3. Short game was just deal out the properties and trade 'em.
Long game was if a persond idnt want to buy the property it could be auctioned
4. own all three properties, rent got doubled (unless there was a housse or hotel)

We played that anything that came from community chest cards, income tax, and luxury tax went into the "pot" in the center of the board, and whoever landed on free parking got it. The pot would build up several times over the course of the game.

We also consolidated houses...if you had three houses on all three properties, then you just put three on one of them so there was never a problem with not enough houses.

We played a lot when I was a kid (no video games in our household!), and we actually made up our own cards at some point. My mom cut them out of posterboard and wrote them...they were "railroad" cards and you took one on any railroad you landed on.

We never added the interest to get stuff out of hock. You just paid up what you received for the mortgage.

I can't think of any other special rules we used.

Interestingly enough, the online version I played with my friend has some of the "special" rules you people play with. Perhaps they're not so special after all?

On a side note, when I played her, she accidentally auctioned Boardwalk when she had no money. I got Boardwalk for $40

I play straight rules, I've tried all sorts of variations, and they just seem to complicate the game or make an already long game longer.

It seems to me that almost everybody gives out something when you land on free parking. However, not giving out anything for free parking usually shortens the game by an hour or two.

To be honest, I never was a fan of monopoly. It isn't really a game of skill. It's much more based on luck. I just play it to kill time. Oh, and another reason why I don't like it is that i've never lost. Granted that i've only played my sister and 1 other friend throughout my life.

We do the Free Parking thing, too. We start off with $500, then add any taxes or Chance or Comm. cards tothe pot that we deem apply.

Personally, I always try to buy Mediterranean and Baltic Avenue early on so I can start to build 'em up, then get the losers coming 'round Go and fleece. It adds up quickly. :p

Yeah, taxes go to free parking
You have to put 4 houses on a property before it can become a hotel.
Never did auctioning, just giving it back t the bank, then if you landed on it.

ohhh and if I was a banker free no interest loans to myself;)
Haven't played the game in years...

I played those rules too, with the addition of:
-You have to do one lap of the board before you can buy any property
-If you roll a double whilst in jail, you get out free. If you don't do it in 3 goes you have to pay

Charlatan 08-29-2005 04:55 AM

A lot of the "special rules" above are actual rules of the game.

The only one we use that isn't a rule is the Free Parking thing where you put in all taxes, fees, etc. plus 500 into the centre... anyone landing on Free Parking gets it.

No need to be embarassed. There's no shame in having a game night with friends. I do it quite regularly. But then again, I'm a dork, so take that as you will...

As for rules, I definitely throw all the tax money into free parking, but I never stuff it with a set amount each time. If you land on free parking and no taxes have been paid since the last time, you get nothing.
But one rule I absolutely hate is the auction rule. Sure it makes the game run a little quicker, but it just annoys me to have people buying up properties without ever landing on them. It feels so wrong.

Your rules 2 and 4 are standard rules for the game.

every monopoly game i have ever played ends up with the board flying across the room and someone yelling "FUCK THIS GAME"

grandma is such a poor sport.

ShaniFaye 08-30-2005 04:49 PM

now see....our rules depended on which kind of monopoly we were playing ;)

in one version you could strip to get out of jail

in a real game though....all monies paid went into the "pot" for free parking, you could bribe someone with a piece of property to get out of jail and if rolling doubles got you past go you got 400 dollars

Nimetic 08-30-2005 04:52 PM

Back at Uni they had a variant called scull monopoly. Scull is local slang for drinking a glass of alcohol quickly.

It was played with spirits and a small measuring cylinder from the chem labs.
