[A moderator merging the threads, just a thought]

This is definitely something I won't be looking forward in a couple weeks when I begin my freshman year....
I hope brian's advice can work at a small college [of 1500 total] though it did work at my high school which had the same amount [I got school supplies too  ]

I'll give an update when I get to find out how much I had to bend over for the books. ;)

keyshawn.

I just read this:

COMPUTER EXTRAS BLAMED FOR RISING TEXTBOOK PRICES
A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) indicates that prices for college textbooks have risen at twice the rate of inflation for the past 20 years and blames the increase largely on the inclusion of items such as CD-ROMs that are routinely bundled with books. The report estimates that the average full-time student spends $900 a year on textbooks, a figure that the California Student Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG)--long a critic of publishers--said echoes its own research. Merriah Fairchild, a higher education advocate for the group, said, "The findings of this report support what we've been saying for two years." Bruce Hildebrand, a spokesman for the Association of American Publishers, refuted the report, saying the average amount is closer to $600. Hildebrand accused CALPIRG of pressuring publishers to eschew newer technologies that can be of educational benefit to students. Fairchild said that in CALPIRG's research, 65 percent of faculty "rarely or never used the bundled materials in their courses." Not only do the CDs make it so much more expensive (often upwards of 20$ extra for the CD), but when you go to sell the book back, if you don't have the CD, you take at least a 20$ hit on the resell value.

meembo 08-24-2005 05:35 PM

That sucks. I have a hard time reconciling $250 for a textbook.

Glava 08-24-2005 08:14 PM

The CDs are pretty much useless. I've used many books that included CDs, but none of my classes utilized them. Just another fucking excuse to make money.
