When I eat ____ , I have to eat ____ as a side dish

My mac-and-cheese must have is applesauce.

Also--roast beef must be eaten with roasted taters and thick gravy. Otherwise, thanks but no thanks.

Blackthorn 08-06-2005 06:23 AM

Pancakes & Thick Sliced Bacon :D Taaaaystee!

djflish 08-06-2005 06:34 AM

Chips have to be eaten with mayonnaise.
They're just not right without it :)

DEI37 08-06-2005 06:50 AM

Chips & mayo? Gotta pass on that one. But, when I have a nice steak, potatoes of some description are a must, either mashed or french fries. With mashed, a good gravy MUST accompany them.

Rubyee 08-06-2005 07:02 AM

I guess I don't have anything like that. But one combination that I do enjoy is mac&cheese and hot dogs. Yummmmm, mac&cheese and hot dogs.

radioguy 08-06-2005 07:04 AM

sausage (on the grill) and mac & cheese, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

paddyjoe 08-06-2005 09:11 AM

Roasted chicken and smashed potatoes!!!

fuckin mouth is watering now just thinking about it.

What time is breakfast? :D

Ananas 08-06-2005 10:48 AM

not eating, but drinking: gotta have tea with honey. Sugar is not a good substitute.

snowy 08-06-2005 10:58 AM

Steak: baked potato
Turkey: mashed potatoes (I can live without stuffing, but I don't want to)
Chicken strips: macaroni and cheese
Clam chowder: bread
Doritos: cola product

World's King 08-06-2005 11:17 AM

Sushi must be eaten with saki.
Fried Chicken has to have hot sauce on it.
Every sandwich has to have mayo.

I'm not big on side dishes. I like lots of small of meals.

streak_56 08-06-2005 11:21 AM

mac n'cheese and a huge glass of milk
steak and potatos
spaghetti and garlic bread
pancakes and bacon

And my personal favourite
Roast beef and prime rib...... had it once.... and nearly died, it was so good. I have not had roast beef or prime rib since.

noodle 08-06-2005 11:28 AM

Sandwiches with Sriracha.
Shepard's pie with HP.
Potato chips with yellow mustard.
Seafood with hot sauce, not tartar sauce.
Hummus with garlic pita chips.
(If I put all of those things on the side in those little ramekins, they're side dishes, right? :D )
Salmon and green beans. I know, it's weird.

Oh man, I gotta go grocery shopping. Still out of HP, hummus and pitas. Yikes!

I'm the same.

Most of my 'meals' are a bowl of something ...

I do have one case, however ...

If I eat pizza, I have to have vegetables on the side.
Not on the pizza, I need more than that.

Pizza seems so thick and heavy, I will not eat it without veggies.

don't eat it that much anyways ...

Oh, and I must have something to drink with my food.
Usually water.

Seething 08-06-2005 12:09 PM

When I eat turkey, I have to eat stuffing(dressing) as a side dish.

I love Thanksgiving. :D

mystmarimatt 08-06-2005 01:23 PM

Well, this thread has thoroughly caused my tummy to grumble.

And all of my ideas were stolen by other folks. Confound it.

Blasphemy. 08-06-2005 02:56 PM

Pancakes and syrup MUST have peanut butter on them, or I can't eat them.

fresnelly 08-06-2005 02:57 PM

Apple Pie with a side of Vanilla Ice Cream and Nippy Chedder Cheese! I don't understand the chemistry, but this is an ideal compound.

Also, Nachos are incomplete without fresh Guacamole.

Rodney 08-06-2005 03:57 PM

When I eat pork chops, I have to have something sweet and fruity as a side dish -- apple sauce, or a chopped-up and nuked apple tossed in a little butter and brown sugar. I've been known to eat sliced bananas with pork chops when apples weren't available. It's actually a pretty good combination.

Grasshopper Green 08-06-2005 04:12 PM

Hmmm...I really don't have any except turkey MUST have cranberry sauce. I eat them together, the taste sensation is divine.

guthmund 08-06-2005 08:18 PM

Mashed potatoes must be accompanied by corn. Preferably mixed together on the plate with a hint of salt. Peas are an acceptable substitute, but not a replacement.

I know...sometimes I have the sophisticated palatte of a 12 year-old.

splck 08-06-2005 10:37 PM

prime rib with hot horse radish
sushi with a cold beer
nasi goring with krupuk and sambal olek
french fries and mayo

time to eat....

optik_nerve 08-06-2005 11:09 PM

My spaghetti or any other Italian dish (minus pizza) has to have garlic bread with it.

Chicken and Barbeque...mmm....

and any sandwich with mayo.

Dengar 08-06-2005 11:12 PM

Steak: Potatoes (mashed or baked)
Burger and Fries: Pepsi or Coke
Any Sandwich: Miracle Whip
PB n J: Big glass of cold milk
Chicken Strips/Nuggets: Honey Mustard Sauce

I agree with sake, but I also have to have wasabi with my sushi.

And vinegar/ketchup/gravy/a sauce with my French fries.

Hey, one of my dad's favorite things to eat is mashed-up boiled potatoes mixed with canned peas and brown gravy. He mixes everything together--I'm sure given corn and mashed potatoes he would do the same. And he's 58.

scott_p_1 08-07-2005 07:31 AM

Lately, my Hamburgers must have Peanut Butter (along with ketchup and cheese). Mmmm, peanut butter burger

bobillydylan 08-07-2005 08:12 AM

Chips just got to have tomatoe ketchup, but i am a healthy eater so its very rare that i eat anything that you lot mention lol

meembo 08-07-2005 08:14 AM

Beer and chocolate

Sushi and ice water

I can't think of any food+food combos

Charlatan 08-07-2005 08:26 AM

Cereal must be eaten with milk...

JustJess 08-07-2005 08:35 AM

toasted sesame seed bagel with peanut butter. Yum!
I tend to always have potatoes with my steak...
It makes me seem like a pregnant person, because of what I like... I like to follow ice cream with potato chips, or follow toasted marshmallows with cider. Whatever is available and yummy.
Oh!
I must have french fries and blue cheese dip with my wings. Did that last night. Yummy!

Ha! Over the years I've only ran into two other people who didn't wrinkle their nose in disgust over the practice.

I think everything goes with mashed potatoes. It's like the skeleton key of down home cuisine.

My uncle is the same way. Fried potatoes, corn, mac & cheese, pizza, Doritos... His Heinz budget must be astronomical.

Johnny Pyro 08-07-2005 11:33 AM

Chinese food or sushi must be eaten with chopsticks or it doesn't taste right. A fork will not do. Also lots of hot mustard on everything.

Sweetpea 08-07-2005 12:05 PM

When i eat a chicken burger i have to have potato salad as a side :)

Sweetpea

Xazy 08-07-2005 12:35 PM

I second that. I haven't eaten Chinese food with a fork for at least... two years, maybe more.

Also, worchestershire sauce on any kind of meat is usually good, as is hickory sauce.

Any kind of sausage/hotdog meat is good with syrup.

Eating an authentic home made burrito without authentic homemade chile sauce is just wrong. I tried it today and it was weird.

There's a whole COUNTRY of people out there who mix their food together in odd combinations...it's called the Netherlands. My dad picked up the practice from his Dutch parents, and as far as I could ascertain when I was there, many other people do the same.

bill96ab 08-07-2005 05:19 PM

pancakes and strawberries

The Netherlands, huh?

I honestly can't remember where or when I picked it up. I've been doing it as long as I can remember...

Well, now I got to go dig up all my geneology stuff and search for long lost Dutch relatives.

I was appalled at the foods I was served in Sweden. Everything has this horrible "kebab" stuff on it. Basically Spam on a huge spit upright like a cotton candy holder. But, I digress... In Sweden, for the most part, pizza must be served with kebab. I ate a lot of bread. But then again, where I was, bread was almost exclusively consumed with shrimp, herring or lobster paste from a tube. <insert shudder here>

I cannot finish eating with anything sweet. Dessert-type items must be followed by or consumed with something salty... pickles or a few chips, preferably.

mandy 08-08-2005 02:38 AM

all this talk about food has left me hungry.

the only time i eat steak(like whole pieces of 300g-500g) is when i go to a resturant but i gotta have it with chips.

my mothers oven roasted lamb with a thick brown gravy with mint jelly and roast potatos.

our typical sunday lunch: roast chicken with roast potatos
indian style curri and either rice or rootie(fried indian flat
bread)
broccolli, cauliflower and carrots boiled in a creamy cheese
sauce with grated cheese over that baked in the oven

thats just the usual...on really special occasions we include chow mein and hong kong chicken and a nyummy nyummy potato bake, accompanied by my mums sweet pumpkin.

yabobo 08-08-2005 04:06 AM

If and I do mean if! I eat pasta with red sauce
( heart burn kills ) Must make a garlic based toasted bread!
add herbs or cheese both it just has to be crusty! :)

I eat pasta with white/brown,butter based sauces all the time.
Red pizzas are a no go too. Will eat white ones all day

This thread has started a big rumble in my tummie :|

you mean french-fries right? not potato chips.. You must be Dutch! I will go with that, but a requirement for fries is ketchup and vinigar.

also:
- cheese (any cheese) on a sandwhich requires mayo as well.
- KD requires ketchup & hotdogs cut into it. (KD is kraft Dinner or mac & cheese)

- speaking of Dutch food habits: what about toast with chocolate shavings on it?

Sprinkles! Personally I prefer milk chocolate but my dad likes dark chocolate and my great-uncle likes the tutti-frutti kind. They're best had on white bread toast with real butter. Mmmm.

spectre 08-08-2005 12:25 PM

Barbecue Sauce, on everything. French fries are really good with it, and especially when I get a Big Mac, I have to add it. The best sauce to use is Sweet Baby Ray's. (Can you tell I'm from Chicago?)

Oh! I had that in Denmark, white bread + marmalade + chocolate. Just like candy! It's okay once in a while as a treat, but all the time? Nah.

God of Thunder 08-08-2005 12:50 PM

If you're going to serve me a steak it better have mushrooms on it, lots of them.

Others:

Pizza - Potato Chips (Crisps to djflish :D )
Grilled Cheeze Sandwich - Bean Soup
Donut - Chocolate Milk

777 08-08-2005 07:04 PM

(insert food here) with cheese.

Buffets are great. I walk around and try to put a little bit of everything on my plate. But I never felt that one food Must go with another food, except cheese.

Paq 08-08-2005 10:38 PM

here goes:
1. popcorn must be: slightly burned with spray olive oil and dashed with parmasan cheese, then served with strong coffee...no idea why, but it's tradition for me and i LOVE it. also, when i have coffee and popcorn, i have to have coke, the drink :)

2. Corona with sushi..dunno why, but it is just soo good.

3. lava cake with espresso chocolate chip icecream, homemade

4. garlic bread with soy sauce on top

5 eggs with cheese

bacon with eggs, although i had bad bacon recently that turned me off to eggs all together..

and when i am in nyc, i have to have calamari with thai dipping sauce..
