Problem with the color Pink?

Skogafoss got back from her sales conference meeting and she brought back a pink iPod Mini and since she has a 40Gb one she really has no need for this little one so she offered it to me suggesting that I could trade it for another color.

Now, I'm very comfortable wearing the color pink as shirts, I have pink fuzzy slippers (which I've worn at work, but that's a different story) and converse high tops. My best friend he used to lament about wearing a pink shirt, insisting that it was "peach".

I was going to exchange it when someone said, "Dude you'll not get mugged for a pink ipod," it made me pause and think.

I'm still on the fence about getting a better color, but as a founding member of the Electron Club, the path of least resistence is the simplest way for me.

As a male do you find that wearing pink gives you the heebie jeebies? do you think it diminishes someone's masculinity?

As a female what do you think of a male that wears pink? do you think it diminishes or enhances a males masculinity?

tecoyah 07-12-2005 09:11 AM

I like Pink.....and in this society....it says alot about your comfort level in yourself (as a Male) to wear it.

Cuatela 07-12-2005 09:14 AM

Personally, I wouldn't want pink, but there's nothing wrong with pink. Depending on the people, you might get some jokes thrown your way, but shouldn't be much to worry about.

SiN 07-12-2005 09:17 AM

/me mugs Cyn for his pink ipod :p

apologies for not contributing much to the discussion ... i'm a girl .. i love pink ... and i could use an iPod!

Cuatela 07-12-2005 09:25 AM

There's a thought...might not get mugged by (most) guys, but a girl wouldn't mind.

JustJess 07-12-2005 09:40 AM

Not necessarily. I would definitely trade it - pink is just not my thing. It's just too girly for me! I don't like it on most men, or most women either. It's not about the masculinity - their own masculinity shows one way or another. I just don't like the color, period. Darker pinks aren't as bad, however.

Pink sucks. Sorry.

StormBerlin 07-12-2005 09:48 AM

I have a pink mini ipod, but i'm a girl. I think that you'll get some good natured ribbing from friends, but for the most part I think people have better things to do than focus on what color your MP3 player is, at least I would hope so. Plus, if you encounter the same type of people that I do, it doesn't really matter what color the ipod is, the fact that it's an ipod is going to get you shit :)

Redlemon 07-12-2005 09:52 AM

You could always get an opaque case for it.

ophelia783 07-12-2005 10:29 AM

Majik wears just as much (if not more) pink than I do.

I have a Pink Mini iPod, and he seems perfectly comfortable holding it and listening to it; I think after a while, you need to say, "Screw convention!", and just do what you're comfortable with.

Grasshopper Green 07-12-2005 11:12 AM

I've seen guys wearing pink shirts that looked fantastic. I've seen guys wearing pink shirts that looked absolutely horrible; to me it's about the way the shirt looks, not the guy wearing it. As for seeing a guy using a pink iPod, I don't think I'd think twice about it.

Glory's Sun 07-12-2005 11:17 AM

I like pink. Pink after all is the color of one of my favorite things ;) I'd just go with the flow. You'd be unique (at least a little bit).

lurkette 07-12-2005 11:34 AM

I danced last night with a guy who was wearing a pink tshirt that said "tough guys wear pink". I don't like pink on anybody - it may be my least favorite color - but I don't particularly hate it on guys. I don't see why it should be any more or less acceptable than pale yellow or pale green just because they give little girl babies pink booties to differentiate them from the boys with their blue booties. If it looks good on you, wear it. And if you like the Ipod, keep it pink. It'll make a good story.

*Nikki* 07-12-2005 11:35 AM

OMG I would love a pink ipod. Also I think you should just keep it, afterall who cares what others think?

guthmund 07-12-2005 11:35 AM

I'm a practical guy. If it works, I'd keep it. It's not like trading it in for a different color is going to make me feel more manly.

It'll hardly ever be out swinging in the wind anyway, right? I mean from what I can tell most mp3 players stay tucked away in pockets and under jackets lest the world see their playlist filled with Hillary Duff and old Manilow songs.

Besides, I kind of like pink. I'll bet no other guy at the office has one, eh?

slant eyes 07-12-2005 11:51 AM

i don't think what you have or what you wear necessarily adds/subtracts from one's masculinity at all.

that is usually determined by what you do.

if you feel comfortable with it, go for it. it should boil down to what you're comfortable with and not what others think of you. hands down for wearing pink fuzzies at work, that's awesome.

i guess i see this as the same when kids drive trucks and say, 'look at me, i drive a big truck, i must be a tough man', or those lo-riders that have that stupid pose while they're driving and staring at you, 'look, i'm cool'

if you are...you don't have to say it.

hope you enjoy whatever color ipod you decide to go for

Giant Hamburger 07-12-2005 11:57 AM

I like Pinkie.

Ustwo 07-12-2005 12:09 PM

Pink is good.

Maybe you can get some glue on rhinestones while you are at it :p

Charlatan 07-12-2005 12:13 PM

I bought my wife a pink mini iPod and borrow it when I travel... a colleague mentioned that people are going to think I'm gay if I have a pink iPod (she was only half joking)... I told her I was secure enough in my masculinity to not give a damn what others think.

Pink is just a colour. Get over it. Besides, my pink shirt goes nicely with my black leather jacket. :P

Minx 07-12-2005 12:32 PM

Screw the masses! It's just a color - if a lady is seen carrying a blue ipod does that mean she's butch?!?! I'd say carry it, and just smile....it'll keep people wondering.

And as far as the original question goes - I think pink can look good on men but also it can look terrible - same as with women!

kramus 07-12-2005 12:46 PM

I almost wish you'd had a poll. The results would be scribed into the pink ipod case and it would be "the pink ipod" for ever more

quadro2000 07-12-2005 01:00 PM

If it's a free iPod mini, I don't give a shit what color it is.

bobophil 07-12-2005 01:12 PM

i dont find any problem w/ pink, just another color. my friends think differently though.

We've been trying to find that t-shirt for my dad :) He's 6'5", 240--not a small guy--and loves to wear pink polo shirts. Soft pink, bright pink--yeah, my dad wears pink and he enjoys it. More importantly, he looks good in it!

I don't make any assumptions about a guy wearing pink--it's one of my favorite colors in all of its shades and tints. More power to a guy who can wear pink and be comfortable in it--that says a lot about his confidence.

Sweetpea 07-12-2005 02:21 PM

If you feel comfortable, to heck with what everyone else thinks!

if i saw a guy with that, i might pause a minute to let my gaydar work it's magic, but other than that, i think it's cool and *I* might try to mug you for it :)

ubertuber 07-12-2005 02:26 PM

I've just gotten more adventurous with my wardrobe, and I find that I get more compliments when I wear pink or purple than I do with any other colors... Pink accessories though... Haven't gone there yet. I say keep the ipod. If you feel uncomfortable, get one of those skin things.

Gilda 07-12-2005 03:10 PM

Eh. Whether pink looks good on you has more to do with your coloring than with your sex. I'm a winter. Pink as a dominant color does not look good on me, but as an accessory, it's ok.

Pink on a guy is fine if it matches his coloring, his style. It has nothing at all to do with how masculine he is.

Seeker 07-12-2005 03:49 PM

I think people usually gravitate toward colours that they like. Whether purchasing items for around the home or items to wear there will be some preference toward colour and style.

It confuses me when I see people wearing something or purchasing something that does not reflect their expression. For instance, using my mother as an example, she has done some funny things like buying an outfit that is just 'not her'... colours especially so. The item will then sit in the cupboard and never see the light of day until it is bundled with items for charity a year or two down the track.

This explains to me why I find that some people (males included) can wear pink extremely well and others just can't. Due to social conditioning and belief I sometimes look at a male wearing pink and I am either really surprised it looks so great on them or giggle because it just looks so wrong. Either way I will take more notice because pink on males has been socially questionable.

My opinion on the iPod, if the pink bothers you, or you would prefer another colour, exchange it. I don't see that it should be an issue at all.

SVT01Cobra 07-12-2005 03:49 PM

I have quite a few pink shirts. I'm one of the few guys who can actually pull off that look.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all, I agree with what Tecoyah said. Just means you are comfortable with your manhood.

The Watcher 07-12-2005 04:03 PM

ITS JUST ANOTHER COLOR WHATS THE BIG DEAL.SOME REAL NICE THINGS COME IN PINK.

I think pink is fine on a guy. Just a single pink item does not make a big statement or anything. Now a Pink floral shirt with pink pants?? That might be a bit overboard. A pink I-pod - keep it. Don't waste your valueable time exchanging it. Just enjoy it, field those comments calmly and ignore any rude ones. Nobody should care.

spectre 07-12-2005 07:11 PM

Do a google search for "ipod mini skin" and there are a bunch of places that make cases and stick on decals that will cover the iPod so it being in pink won't be a problem.

God of Thunder 07-13-2005 05:05 AM

Take a magic marker and write "Floyd" on it. Now you have a "Pink Floyd" Ipod.

Most people would find it amusing.

I would...then I would steal it, if SiN din't get to you first.

Meditrina 07-13-2005 05:23 AM

When I was younger, I was conditioned to think Pink=Girl. I see now that was a foolish way to think. I no longer look at a guy in pink and assume he is gay. If he looks good, who cares what color his shirt is. I'd say save yourself the trouble, and just keep the pink iPod. Who cares what other people think?

johnnymysto 07-13-2005 05:43 AM

Man.....tough choice. Personally, I'd exchange it for a different color if the store would just do that. If not, I'd tough it out just because it's a free iPod. I mean, if I were to go and buy my own iPod, I definitely wouldn't choose a pink one because that's not my style. A pink shirt on a guy is one thing - a pink iPod is another.

(if you want my postal address to pass it on, PM me :D )

Rlyss 07-13-2005 07:46 AM

Go for a new case/skin if you really want. Otherwise I'd just keep it because hey, free iPod. And if anyone says anything to you about it, say 'Hey, free iPod' and if they've got any common sense they'd understand. If someone giggles behind your back then what do you care... you can't see them ;)

MSD 07-13-2005 09:34 AM

I wouldn't get an iPod unless it was free, and I just don't look good wearing pink (although I wouldn't be flashing an ipod around in the same way that I wouldn't hold up a "Mug me" sign.)

update:

I brought the box with me to work in hopes that I'd open it charge it etc.

I like the idea that since I'm going to get a case for it the color is probably moot. Not to mention if I got say a Belkin Aluminum case which is probably my case of choice since the one on my palm worked wonderfully getting dropped on lava rocks in Iceland.

The Pink Floyd idea is wonderful, I have a nice good superbit(?) Dark Side of the Moon rip which would be a nice way to "initiate it."

I did start this out as a poll and over thought the Poll idea too much that I abandoned it because I was more interested in the thoughts of the different girls and guys, and did not want to make a dozen poll options. A simple yes/no/don't care would have totally sufficed. I should have done it that way.

I've asked some coworkers just to see what they would think and ironically they all voted for trying to exchange it for a better color based on the fact that they have given pink ones away to girls.

Tomorrow is another day. I'll leave the box here and give it one more opportunity to get opened.

i'm a security guard part time. I had to break up a fight last night in a club because some guy was wearing a pink shirt. yeah, i think you should avoid it... the ipod might look cool tho...

RMMsGirl 07-17-2005 05:32 PM

Okay, I used to absolutely hate the color pink. I mean, I would steer clear of it as much as I could. Now I'm okay with it. And really I think if a guy is man secure enough with himself to wear pink, then he should.

Nunquam_Idem 07-18-2005 02:47 PM

So few guys can pull off the pink shirt without it looking unmanly. I would never try, I already know that my wife doesn't like the whole pink guy shirt phenomenon. Can't say I much care for it myself either.

Same thing with the iPod. Don't think I could pull off pink. If I won one, I'd get a case or write 'Floyd' on it (good one, God of Thunder)

Kudos to you if you can pull it off...

Cynthetiq 07-18-2005 02:59 PM

I forgot to update again:

Last Friday I was bored at work... so I opened it, did the install. I went to Circuit city and bought the belkin case. You can't tell it's pink except for the pink letters on the dial which is very suble. I did name it Floyd when prompted to by iTunes.

I actually dig the pink one. I find that it actually suits me as it is.

"tough guys wear pink", I like that. I should buy a shirt like that :D
I don't wear pink because I know I'd never hear the end of it from my brothers... I know I shouldn't care what they think... but they're my brothers, so what they think counts... somewhat. Whenever I play HALO 2 I always make sure that my character is colored pink and has the heart-shaped logo with the lips in the middle on his arms, 'cause it must really suck to get your ass whooped by a character that looks very ::ahem:: ... fruity. Anyway, I will most likely wear pink when I am older and living on my own. You know, tigh-fitting muscle shirts in the color pink. And some pink slacks too. In fact, I want to wear a full suit in pink color along with a pink tophat... and a pink cane.

777 07-18-2005 10:41 PM

If he can wear pink, confidently, I have to say hurrah for him breaking stereotypes. When women wear it, it feels overdone, and a bit too cutesy.

Sigh... just why

I'm a guy and my position on pink is that its not a color for men, it's just not manly!

Women don't want sensitive men.

They want a MAN who can
take charge of a situation
make them feel safe
can make them cum
cares about them / what they have to say (at least most of the time)
and be sensitive with them in behind closed doors[it lets herknow you trust her] <-- i usually fuck that up

Wearing pink.. i dunno just not for me

but if you can do it you go gurl friend <-- lols at u

upir 08-10-2005 07:47 AM

I love pink, I try to wear it but it's really hard for me to find super-sized pink clothes.
Once I listen to 2 kids arguing that pink should only be for girls and blue for girls but after mentioning "Pink panther" and "Blue's clues" (from the clue program) it ended in tears

mystmarimatt 08-10-2005 08:50 AM

If nothing else, it will act as a conversation piece.

As far as clothes and the color itself go, I have and wear pink shirts, so long as they match with whatever else I'm wearing.

It isn't my favorite color in the world, but if it matches and looks good at the moment, I'm not one to complain.

SVT01Cobra 08-10-2005 01:43 PM

I must say, there are some guys that look especially delicious in a nice pink button down shirt.

As for me, I really don't look good in a lot of pink. Meaning a solid pink shirt is too much pink.

As for the ipod, If it's free I'll take it any color... and it would have to be free. My broke-ass doesn't have money for such things. :p

skier 10-08-2005 06:08 PM

My only problem with the color pink is that guys wear it because it's fashionable. The statement you're making isn't of originality, but rather of conformity. But the thing is, the statement it's supposed to make is edgy, and girls will like you for it. And in the end, isn't that the reason most people wear clothes above and beyond comfort and protection?

Fashion is confusing and hypocritical.

AngelicVampire 10-08-2005 06:31 PM

Depends on how you wear the pink. A pink shirt I always feel looks bad under a suit (just a personal preference, I like white or black shirts), however a nice strong pink contrasting something like black can look stunning, I suppose its all about how you carry yourself with it rather than the colours... tonight I found its actually true, if you walk up to someone, look them in the eye and talk to them then they don't notice what you are wearing!

MeltedMetalGlob 06-17-2011 08:52 PM

I've known a few guys that would wear pink shirts- and no one ever told them it was unmanly, mainly because to do so would have not been survival-promoting. ;)

People should wear any color they like, if it looks good on them. As far my own clothes go, I've never worn anything pink. Orange is also a color that's never shown up in my wardrobe- just clashes terribly with my mostly earth-tones. :suave:

chinese crested 06-17-2011 10:30 PM

As a perpetual searcher of the remotes/telephone etc - pink would be far preferable to hide in the dark black. If anyone tries to take the pee, blame the wife - sigh the sigh of the overlong patient spouse 'I am blessed you know, she is a lovely women, but I do wish that when she does a a hot white wash, she would remember to check for her red socks - not like its the first time. Sigh'.
Surely the most important is that it works and you can get some enjoyment out of it. As for pink shirts etc - sad to say, I should have checked more thoroughly for those odd red socks - my poor sons were often seen marching off to school with their whites various shades of pink after a washing machine accident - probably is something to feel uncomfortable about if you are between 6 and 8.

flat5 06-18-2011 06:44 AM

Sometimes a standout color makes sense.
I used to use an orange tenor saxophone case in the 1980s.
It was most unlikely that anyone would choose to steal that one from a club.
Much more likely to take one of the black cases.
Also when it was on the back of my bicycle the orange was noticeable.

I don't have a pink shirt but always have liked a burgundy shirt with a black suit.

genuinegirly 06-18-2011 12:40 PM

My husband has a bright pink tie that looks smashing on him. He wore it to the interview for his current job. Perhaps they were inclined to hire a man who is comfortable wearing a color that is similar to their most popular candy.

I wish more guys were willing to wear more pink. It looks great.

Poetry 06-18-2011 01:41 PM

I feel weird about this topic, when I think about what I find attractive.

Very masculine men in (light) pink (not masculine looking, necessarily, but masculine in personality) are sometimes more attractive to me because they completely own the color.

However, if I'm presented with a wishy-washy man in pink, someone who doesn't own his sexuality, or is just a more femininely-tempered man... it wipes them off my sexual radar entirely. Of course, they already were, but it just cements it for me.

But any man in hot pink, bright yellow, or orange can just go away. I can't stand those colors on either sex.

It bothers me to know that I allow a social construction of a color to influence what I find desirable in a sex or dating partner. I know that most of what I am attracted to is a social construction, but it's usually more a personal preference of personality and sex than looks. Colors are so superficial and such obvious constructions of sexual identity that you'd think they'd be easy to shrug off once you become truly aware of their impact... but I find it hard to do so.

StanT 06-18-2011 04:35 PM

I like "free" more than I dislike pink.

I don't give a fuck about wearing pink. One of my favorite shirts is a pink t-shirt with a drawing of a bunch of male lions sitting around making out. Yes, it's a pink gay pride shirt. My wife got it for me. It's the bee's tits. I also have pink dress shirt that I wear in regular rotation and a pink tie that goes with it.

It's a color. It's 2011. Get over that shit.

I have no problem with pink, just not a color I would choose for clothes/car/etc.

I like black and white the best for anything. (clothes, cars, homes, etc.)

I'm a guy. Wearing pink doesn't make any difference if you wear white or black. In my opinion it's nice colour. To be honest my favorite colors are red and pink. Of course , my wardrobe has only few pink shirts and boxers, but so far nobody has said anything that would offend me.

Nowadays even the biggest "badass guys" is wearing pink ;) It's not like it was 10 years ago , when there were a lot of stereotypes like "if you are a guy in pink , you are gay" bla bla.

How did you manage to get free Victorias Secret Umbrella ? :))))
And to be honest - it looks nice and big. Nothing more needed from umbrella

"its just a color" vs. "society teaches us the meanings of colors, pink isnt neutral"

let the fight begin

pink is a nice color and i guess wearing pink-colored shirts isn't gay. for me, its an expression of mood.

pink is pretty gay, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing it.

Why? Because if you do people will realize that you like to take it in the ass?

I wear pink all the time. I've got a pretty awesome pink shirt that compliments one of my suits well enough that I often get comments from strangers about it. And yet I've got no desire to suck a cock.

Strange, that.
