Does any body here not drink alcohol?

Do any of you also not drink alcohol? What are your reasons?

MageB420666 06-15-2005 07:54 PM

I don't right now because:

1. I don't have any.
2. I'm not 21.
3. I have to drive soon.

MooseMan3000 06-15-2005 08:07 PM

I don't drink because...

1) I don't like how it tastes. I only put stuff in my mouth that tastes good. Call me crazy.

2) I don't like being drunk. I just feel stupid (which is true).

3) My family has a history of alcoholism. My dad, with whom I share many traits, is a chronic alcoholic. He just suffered a major mental breakdown because of it. My brother very nearly went the same way, and it's a constant struggle for him. Many other relatives have died, quite simply because they drank.

4) I'd much rather spend my money on video games or sex toys. (Side note: I think I've said that before...)

5) Getting drunk socially doesn't interest me, because when people are drunk I don't find them interesting. I have no desire to get drunk alone.

And about a million little reasons. Those are the biggies, though.

So why don't you drink, athletics? Seeing as you're "Tilted," I think you'd know by now that it's generally expected that when you start a conversation, you provide some discussion about it.

Seeker 06-15-2005 08:21 PM

I don't drink though occasionally (like maybe twice a year) I will have one or two, but I am usually at home and on my own. I won't drink around others...

1) I don't like drinking because, well.. my Dad was violent when he drank.
and,
2) I didn't like what it did to my peers when they drank.

I don't have any problems with those that choose to drink though, and some people can do it well without the negative occurrances that I've been witness to.

gremlinx8 06-15-2005 08:31 PM

I don't drink alcohol, mostly because I've never felt the desire to drink it. I'm happy with water. Plus, I don't think I'd enjoy being drunk, and I'm not 21.

Ishmal 06-15-2005 09:21 PM

hmmm...

wrong thread for me...

but, (i'm sorry to thread jack) those ppl who say they r not 21... where r they from???
cause the legal drinking age in Australia is 18...

**again: sorry to thread jack athletics**

KellyC 06-15-2005 09:28 PM

Ishmal,

You have to be 21 to drink legally here in America.

I don't drink because

1) I have no desire to

2) I hate the taste

3) I hate being drunk, I can't do any thing right. Example: Standing directly over the toilet and peed outside the bowl..... I like to be able to control myself all the time, lest some shit happen and I did something stupid that I may regret later. Hang over is a bitch, too. It only happened once in my entire life and I hope it would be the only time.

4) I think I can still have a good time w/o the presence of alcohol. Although, my friends think otherwise...

Soft drinks, juices, and water are fine with me.

Biscuit Buns 06-15-2005 09:28 PM

Veeeery rarely. Don't enjoy being drunk and around New Year's, I finally convinced my parents to give it up for health reasons (alcoholics for years and years) and would feel incredibly hypocritical to be drinking, myself, since it was such a long, difficult battle for them. I also don't want to fall into any patterns like they did and face having to give it up later in life. Addictions are tough.

I do miss a nice glass of wine when I make up a fruit and cheese platter, though. As long as I've eaten that, I've had some nice wine with it.

Robaggio 06-15-2005 10:01 PM

I'm 21. I don't drink and never have.

I don't need a social lubricant to interact with others. Drunk people arn't my choice of company 98% of the time anyway.

Asuka{eve} 06-15-2005 10:08 PM

Im in college. Not 21. Dont drink.

MsNobody 06-15-2005 11:21 PM

On a day to day basis I do not drink, just because I don't want to, never really thought about it. I will have Champagne in a toast.

ryfo 06-15-2005 11:30 PM

dont drink for medical reasons and it works out well, my partner drives to where we are going and I drive home...free soft drink too if at a pub that rewards designated drivers(its where you say ur the driver for the night and the pub gives free soft drinks to you to encourage drink free drivers)

Sage 06-16-2005 12:04 AM

I don't drink (anymore) because I just grew up. When I was younger (read: 20) I drank because it was a weekend thing with my friends. I had my fun, but now I think it's a pretty stupid way to escape the humdrum of everyday life. It was a phase, and now I'm done with said phase. I would definitely spend the money on sex toys instead! ;)

mokle 06-16-2005 12:27 AM

I used to not drink, both to save money and because trouble seemed to follow me.

These days I seem to drink atleast 3 times a week though. I'm drinking right now. Seems I'm a product of my environment though, working in the oil patch has led me to drink, haha.

Martel 06-16-2005 12:37 AM

I don't... never liked it, and it all tastes nasty anyway... My college roommates used to mix up drinks for me to try in an attempt to find something I wouldn't think was gross, but that never worked.

Slavakion 06-16-2005 05:19 AM

I'm not 21, and being drunk doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather get buzzed on caffeine than get all slow-witted and confused with alcohol.

Some of you might be thinking that that doesn't always happen. Well, it'd happen to me, since I can't hold my drink. ;)

raeanna74 06-16-2005 05:34 AM

Neither hubby or I have had any alcoholic drinks in probably half a year. We're not tea totallers but we have no desire to drink.

1. I dislike the taste.
2. I don't like the feeling of being drunk.
3. I have to be in control most of the time because I'm caring for my daughter or other children.
4. Alcohol makes me groggy not a party animal. I have more fun when I'm just drinking water or soda.

I have alcohol here in my home but haven't cracked one open in ages. Just not interested.

stevie667 06-16-2005 05:41 AM

I don't like to drink, i act like an ass and do stupid things. I'll still get drunk on special occasions (birthday, new year e.t.c), but i try not to the rest of the time.

sashime76 06-16-2005 05:47 AM

1/2 can of light beer can make me drunk. I had my last beer (spur of the moment in a very hot, humid summer day) in Tokyo, Japan back in 1992.

I guess I don't drink, neither does my wife.

keyshawn 06-16-2005 06:48 AM

Well, when I was about 8, my dad went into A.A. and has been successfully sober for about 10 years now. I can't really remember how he acted or what his role was [as a father] affected by alcohol, when I was little; but my older sisters say that although he was not verbally nor physically abusive or hostile, his alcoholism wasn't good for the family.
I kind of have that fear, if I start drinking casually, I'll end up like him - that, right there, is direct influence not to drink.....

I have had drinks before, albeit very rarely, probably one every few months, if that. My sisters are very casual drinkers as well, I find them more annoying when they're drinking as well. It's pretty ironic, that among the four of us [me, and my sisters ages 23, 27, and 29] I probably drink the least, although I have the access to it as well; since my sister offer to buy it for me and my friends whenever, as long as we don't drive - but I don't take them up on their offer  ]

Also at my age, 18 in the U.S., going to college this fall, alcohol will no doubt be present [it is already amongst my friends somewhat] but I'd prefer hanging with kids who don't need it to have a good time  If you need such a thing as alcohol at a party to enjoy the party, then I think you might have some sort of problem or complex.

Lastly, the taste and nutritional value of it doesn't appeal to me one bit either. Plus, the financial costs of it add up quicky, shown by my sisters' bar tabs.

dlish 06-16-2005 07:18 AM

ive never had a drink..and im 27. not even a drop

1) never had the desire. ive seen my friends and work colleagues and hwat they get up to.
2) id rather spend my money on something worthwhile
3) i dont put shit into my body that wont do me any good. especially since i work out and run.
4) my faith

Cuatela 06-16-2005 07:52 AM

I don't drink...

1. Against my faith
2. I'm under 21.
3. I don't want to loose what little control I have over my body
4. I don't see the point.

streak_56 06-16-2005 08:32 AM

I stopped drinking for about six months, does that count?

If it does, the reason why I stopped is because I found no reason in drinking in the first place. About three weeks ago I have my first drink in six months, thus breaking my streak. Damn you Butter Ripple Schnapps *shakes fist*. Though I was not drunk.

Destrox 06-16-2005 10:06 AM

I rarely drink, and when i do its things that taste good. Which are quite often "girly" drinks as they say, but fuck if I care. I want it to taste good.

So i'd say i drink maybe once every month, and mayb drunk 3 times a year.

Why is it people equate having a drink with getting drunk? A person doesn't have to get drunk every time they have a drink..

I drink, but I rarley get drunk. Maybe it's a sign of growing up?

1) My faith
2) I am far to competitive to give up an edge for any amount of time

Lasereth 06-16-2005 11:18 AM

I don't!

1. Some people drink it, but don't get drunk. That's like drinking expensive horse piss because you're thirsty. Why drink it if you're not gonna get drunk? Drink a damn Coke.

2. If I did want to get drunk, I'd simply stay up until 6 AM and try to do something that requires motor skills. I've heard being drunk is about 90% exactly like being sleepy-drunk.

That's basically it!

-Lasereth

Sweetpea 06-16-2005 11:38 AM

nope. Don't.

too many alcoholics in my family to even touch the stuff. i just associate it with negative things.

Ha ha, I completely forgot to mention that in my post. My mom and dad were both EXTREME alcoholics. I grew up around the stuff and that's basically enough to form a premature negative opinion of it. It nearly ruined my mom and dad's lives.

I drink a few times a week. This post just reminded me a put a bottle of white wine in the fridge for dinner tonight. i don't drink to excess often and a enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, a nightcap in the evening and a pint at the pub. I don't deny myself from taking pleasure in an occasional drink.

ryborg 06-16-2005 12:01 PM

I don't drink, and do not have a desire to either. I will try a few different drinks once I turn 21 just to try them, but not to get raving drunk.

You do realize that some people actually enjoy the taste? A cold beer on a hot day, a glass of wine with dinner, a hot toddy on a winter night. I suppose you could drink coke, grape juice, and hot chocolate instead, but they taste like crap.

The "Why drink it if you're not gonna get drunk?" attitude was common back in high school, but thankfully, not common now (at least in my circle of freinds).

Nice to see some people here aware of the addictiveness of alcohol and abstaining rather than potentially turning into drunks.

Same for me, but in addition I've had some bad experiences.

rhaevyn 06-16-2005 02:12 PM

I don't. The past year, my first year of college, I drank a little bit, just to try it, and I've just decided it's not for me.

Cartuni 06-16-2005 03:11 PM

I didn’t drink in high school, just a tad in college, and then got regularly buzzed while clubbing in my twenties.

I only got completely stinking drunk a few times. After the tequila shot episode  I never drank more than three drinks again...except for one wedding that had a champagne fountain. I have no idea how many glasses I had (and I have a low tolerance for liquor) and I’m ashamed to say I drove my mom and I home afterwards. An hour after arriving safely home I got the shakes, realizing I could have killed us both. I still thank my lucky stars over that, and I’ve never had more that a couple of drinks at one time since, and NEVER drive when I do.

Nowadays I’ll occasionally have a Guinness, or a vodka tonic, or a White Russian – total drinks this past year was probably six.

Amnesia620 06-16-2005 03:34 PM

Rare to occasional. My reasons are: a) loss of control (emotions of other ppl when they are drunk really turns me off - especially anger) b) my mother was an alcoholic c) my brother was born premature with fetal alcohol syndrome (he's mentally and physically retarded, almost 23 years old, his size is comparable to a 4 or 5 year old and his mentality is within the range of 2-4 year old).
I am also 100% against drunk driving - I know for a fact no matter how inebriated I am I will NOT get behind the wheel even when I've only had 1, 2 or even 3 (I'm tipsy by 3 or 4 beers, so there ya go).

dogzilla 06-16-2005 04:21 PM

I haven't touched it to speak of in 30 years.

I started drinking in college and within a year or two was binge drinking once in a while. Blackouts and thinking I got home by magic a few times. We had a Christmas party at work 6 months after I graduated college and I out-drank the department alcoholic. Trying to carry on work that day while partying was interesting. My brother had a graduation party with lots of beer which ended up getting busted by the cops because we were too rowdy. I was worried that the cops were going to shoot me because I was going after a starter pistol in the back of my car or that I would be in jail for having my brother's underage friends at the party. So that was pretty much the end of the drinking. Just as well, since my father was an abusive alcoholic that I didn't want to be like.

Since then I've very rarely had a drink. the last couple times I remember are a glass of champagne in a Paris nightclub and a couple of O'Douls, which I ended up getting slightly buzzed because they really are something like 1% alcohol.

I don't miss the drinking.

Karby 06-16-2005 04:41 PM

i hate the taste of alchohol. i tried it once. never went back.

athletics 06-16-2005 05:25 PM

It is so nice to hear that I am not the only one who doesn't drink. After 27 years of not doing it, the people you know who also don't drink deminishes.

My girlfriend, who I love greatly and is nearly perfect, likes to have wine or a beer when she goes out and for some reason it just eats me up inside. I don't know what it is that gets to me about it. I generally have a lot of control over my thoughts and emotions, but not on this. Does anyone else get that feeling? How do you get around it?

Bodyhammer86 06-16-2005 06:41 PM

1. I'm not 21
2. I don't like the taste of it
3. A DUI charge could toss my intended career (police officer) out the window
4. I have better things to spend my money on
5. It doesn't appeal to me

Being in college, many of the people I know from both work and class are binge-drinking idiots who party and/or drink every other day and it pisses me off to no end. The only advice I can really give is to just try to ignore it and not let it bother you.

FallenAvatar 06-16-2005 06:55 PM

I drink it when out once in a while;however, it isn't a substance that I need and there for can go long periods of time without ordering or buying the substance. Certain kinds are good in small doses all the rest are a health hazard that doesn't need to happen all the time.

Fremen 06-16-2005 07:34 PM

I don't drink. I've never had more than a couple of sips of beer. Didn't like the taste.
I do like the taste of some alcoholic beverages, but I have a big fear that I will totally lose myself in a bottle.

I can duplicate the buzz by staying up super late and drinking concentrated, highly sweeted coolaid and soda with caffene. Plus it's not as expensive though it still gives me a sugar low headache when all that wears off. Alcohol just seems so expensive and wasteful. Also Codine does the same thing to me as alcohol does including the dizziness. Codine doesn't give me a hangover either. Anyone got some Vicodin?

skier 06-16-2005 08:37 PM

althletics- it's because you take pride in your choice of not drinking. you associate your abstinence of alcohol with responsibility, willpower, strength of character, or other "good" qualities.

When your girlfriend drinks, you associate negative qualities to her- the opposites of the ones you've associated with abstinence. You're not seeing the fairly mild effects of a drug on your girl, you're watching immoral behavior.

At least, that's my take.

MiSo 06-16-2005 09:02 PM

I used to drink alot of alcohol but stopped because i had one nasty night that involved vodka, whiskey, and my lonesome.
got totally trashed and couldn't even picture the taste of alcohol or i'd throw up.
ever since then, i just stopped drinking

spectre 06-16-2005 09:39 PM

It takes a lot of convincing to get me to drink at all, and that's only one drink on a special occasion. So at most, I'll maybe have one margarita in a year. The reason is, at one point I was hospitalized and put on a large amount of morphine for a long time, and while I was on it, I became violent and verbally abusive. They nearly restrained me. I don't ever want that part of me to come out again. I prefer to stay in control.

bgivnin 06-16-2005 10:00 PM

I don't drink because I:

...Hate the taste of pretty much every alcoholic drink I've ever consumed.
...Can't afford it.
...Don't like the way it makes me feel when I drink it. I get this feeling like my stomach is going to explode.
...Don't even want to deal with the concept of being sick, getting a hangover or doing something REALLY stupid while intoxicated.

It's just not worth it to me. I'd rather spend the money on musical gear and video games. :)

Good point. A good bottle of wine enhances almost any dining experience :) . I wasn't going to reply in this thread because I do drink but in support of this line of thought I do have a glass of wine (sometimes two) with dinner but it's been a long time since I've ended up in the bag.

islam. (although im aware that judaism also prohibits the consumption of alcohol?)

its one of the contributing factors as to why i dont drink, but not exclusively the only factor. there are so many reasons, but i just weighed up the pros and cons of it..and realistically theres more cons than pros, whether it be monetary, phyical, emotional senses etc.

i couldnt give up a single minute of soberness to be smashed. i guess thats why i never have smoked weed or any other drug. although ive had the chance many times, as well as been tempted on numerous occasions. usually my common sense prevails, and i go home not feeling guilty.
