Shampoo/Conditioner

Hello all, as a male I am not used to having to think about differnt kinds of shampoo and conditioner. But Ive recently been growing my hair out (for about 1-2 years now) My hair is now just below shoulder length and it gets CRAZY tangled in the wind... it even gets tangled by doing nothing! Ive tried many different shampoos and conditioners and they all seem to suck, Ive never used fancy salon ones though. It seems that my hair falls out in chunks now (maybe im just thining? Im only 20 though). My hair falls out in the shower only when I shampoo/condition it (mosty on conditioner) and it doesnt fall out at all when only rinsing with water. I only shampoo every other day.

Right now I just use herbal essanses. Anyways just wondering if you ladies know what the best stuff is to use. Haha great post eh!! Thanks for all the help.

Is your hair straight or curlyish? Curly heads have this problem that nature wants us to beleive that we are losing massive amounts of hair in the shower, when actually, we're only getting rid fo the hair that would have blown away in the wind, had our hair not been curly and trapped it. Straight hair and curly hair loose about the same amount of hair in a single day, but because straight hair doesn't get twisted in with the other hairs, when it falls out it just leaves the head... Curly sticks around until it gets washed.

My hair is just past my shoulders and depending on humidity can be very curly or only slightly curly, neutrogena is the shampoo/conditioner is the brand I prefer most because it's gentler on color treated hair and doesn't have any fragrance in it.

No matter what shampoo/conditioner you use, wash your hair, condition it, and leave the conditioner in for a little bit, especially on the ends, then using a wide tooth comb, comb thru your hair and let the conditioner sit for a little while longer, then dunk your head to rinse it out. The comb really helps to distribute the conditioner.

Do a final rinse in as cold a water as you can stand. I don't know if this is a wives tale or not but it's supposed to seal the hair cuticle and making it reflect light better.

Get regular trims on y our hair.. t he tangled mess could be coming from split ends. Split ends don't repair themselves, they need to be trimmed. If you trim your hair yourself, get scissors designed for cutting hair, they will be sharper than household scissors and will do much less damage.

Mal says it best. Also, if you don't brush your hair enough, you will lose hair in the shower. Simple as that.

I use Neutrogena's Triple Moisture line as I have very coarse, thick, wavy hair. Do exactly as Mal said, and do the cold water rinse (and Mal, that's no old wives tale, that's a fact--cold water DOES seal the hair cuticle). You should select a shampoo/conditioner combo based on your hair type. Is it coarse? Curly? Thin? Thick? Wavy? Straight? Fine?

Also, getting a good leave-in conditioner can be helpful--a light leave-in you can also use with your normal conditioner without weighing your hair down can help get some of the tangles out (example: Infusium's leave-in spray). Secondly, using a hair tie does wonders for preventing wind tanglage (I think I just made up a word). Make sure to use elastics with no metal. Metal is very bad for your hair.

I love to use Hemp Shampoo and Conditioner from the body shop. My hair always seems more managable when I use it.

My husband uses suave for men 2 in 1 and its made his hair feel really nice!

And as was mentioned above, the Infusium leave in works wonders.

Thanks for all the help people, I recently got my hair trimmed a little so there shouldnt be any split ends. I think that maybe the fact that I work in a really dirty enviroment 10.5 hours a day might have something to do with hair falling out... anyways here is a picture of my to give you an idea of what it looks like..... err nevermind, I cant find a way to post a picture

I use cirtus shine....or something. If its windy out your hair's going to get tangled no matter what. Wash in warm water, rinse in cold, brush when your hair is damp. Long hair falls out like crazy, mine goes through cycles where I "shed" and leave hair everywhere, espeically when I was or brush it. Long hair usually equals more tangles. When you brush it and it's tangley hold your roots so you aren't pulling as much on your hair. This may help with the shedding. Memakenosense.

Are you doing anything to protect your hair when you work, like putting it in a ponytail and/or wear a hat? I know I shed more when my hair is all sooty and grimey. I'm no big fan of conditioners, I try to avoid unneccesary wear and tear on my hair instead. Like protecting it from dirt and strong sunlight, and never use a hair-dryer or rub it dry with a towel.

I wash and condition and swear by Pantene, I've never found anything that makes my hair look as pretty, including the "expensive" salon ones.

My hair is down to right past my shoulders now (YAY), and it always comes out by the handfuls when I wash it. You could never tell it though as much hair as I have.

I agree with the cold water rinse....it makes my hair really shiny :)

I'm a guy with hair down to about my shoulderblades, longer hair really made me think i was losing alot more hair than i really was simply because the hair is alot longer now that when cleaning my brush its a nice sized hairball. I dont really have the tangling problems as much simply because my hair is straight and I work in quite a dirty enviroment too but keeping it in a ponytail is usually effective if there are multiple hairties. One odd thing I experience is that I have to wear a hardhat and yet I work in the sun, so I get some pretty wild color differences between the ends of my hair that are nearly white and gradually gets darker towards the roots. Also, my hair product of choice is head and shoulders and most of the time i use the conditioner as well. No real reason behind using this other than habit.

I work in a garage and have long hair. I use Realm shampoo and rarely condition it, although I have been using conditioner lately and my hair doesn't get very tangled.

The best thing you can do for your hair is to find a shampoo and conditioner combo without cetyl alcohol, which dries otu and damages your hair while the other ingredients try to repair it.

My Dave has really long naturally curly hair, he has so much in fact that we keep the under side of his head shaved cause he'd look like the pink panther coming out of the dryer if we didnt

see...(and yes he was 18 in this picture from his graduation...as is his g/f)

He uses only pantene products as well.....he has hair (now anyway) that girls die for. Not only do the natural curls look like the best spiral perm ever, its as soft as mink. When we go out people actually come up to us to touch his hair and cant believe how soft it feels. He washes and conditions daily and is actually the one that conviced me to spend the money on Pantene. My hair, as processed as it is, stays continually soft and shiny

I have longer hair, just above my waist; it's pretty fine, but there's a lot of it. And it tangles very very easily!! I normally brush it in the morning before shower and at night before bed, then use big comb when it's wet. I use all Alba products and I highly recommend them. I use the daily rinse-out conditioner and follow with a little of the leave-on conditioner. I also have the spray-on detangler for the more challenging days! These products don't weigh my hair down and they're very concentrated so a little goes a long way. Plus, almost completely organic (and no animal products/testing, a must for me). I buy at health food store, not sure about availability in Canada . . . website is albabotanica.com.

I've read that it's normal to lose 25 hairs each day? Each brushing? Anyway, unless you're seeing thinning it's prob nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

I have a strange urge to quote Billy Madison in this thread....

Anyway, I usually just shampoo.

Who thought I would weigh in on this subject? The old chin whiskers get nothing but Pantene Pro V. It makes the old beard all soft and gets it to hang well.
