mew 05-01-2005 03:28 PM

Thats so funny..Im going down to TO for a college friends wedding that weekend. But I cant get any time off, so Im sorry to have to miss it.
Though, Id prob be too shy to go anyways. I hope you guys have a Blast and take lots of pictures to show us! Party hard!

Charlatan 05-01-2005 03:33 PM

Where is the wedding being held? Maybe we can crash?

cellophanedeity 05-01-2005 03:38 PM

Is the Victory Cafe an actual cafe? As in, I can get in? If it's a bar, then I'll need to pass, but otherwise I'd love to meet up with you!

How old are you? You only need to be 19 to get served in a bar. That said, it is better labelled as a pub. In other words, they serve alcohol but also food and you don't have to be any particular age to get in...

You would be more than welcome!

cellophanedeity 05-01-2005 05:33 PM

Ah, pubs are much better than bars, as I can actually get in. I'm only eighteen and will be until October.

So I'd love to join in! I'll bring muttonglutton with me... I'm sure he'll come too ;)

aberkok 05-01-2005 08:40 PM

Holy Crap!! I'm playing upstairs there with my Big Band there that night! I don't know what time we're playing, but it'll probably be around 9p.m.! More details/confirmation as I find it.

What a frickin' coincidence.

You still have to be 19 to get into pubs...

That's not true at all... I take my kids into pubs all the time. They just have a hell of a time getting served...

How's that for cool? Hope to see you there.

blar 05-02-2005 08:51 AM

may 14 huh dunno if i have plans and i don't know anyone here so i am a little shy lol

but we will see

cellophanedeity 05-02-2005 11:30 AM

As long as I don't ask for booze, I should be fine, right? I mean, I go to the Irish Embassy and to a couple of other places once in a while with a friend for dinner... I don't see why this place should be much different.

Charlatan 05-02-2005 12:03 PM

It won't be...

I look forward to meeting you.

Now where are the other Torontonians and 905ers?

muttonglutton 05-02-2005 08:39 PM

Sounds like a lark! I'd be glad to come along!

Charlatan 05-03-2005 04:26 PM

OK, so the list so far is:

cellophanedeity
Charlatan
James T Kirk
muttonglutton

maybe:
blar

playing uypstairs but will try to come down to say hi: aberkok

There are a ton of us living in and around TO... come on guys... don't miss this opportunity to meet the Captain of the Starship Enterprise!!

aberkok 05-03-2005 08:27 PM

The Victory's not a large room at all, but will there be anyway to know where the TFP table is?

If not then I'll just have to randomly go up to each table and ask "are you guys from the TFP?"

Charlatan 05-04-2005 04:36 AM

Short of putting up a sign advertising out precense I can say that cellophanedeity and I have both posted pictures of ourselves in this thread: Post yourself right effing now! :D

cellophanedeity

Charlatan

Perhaps someone else could suggest a way we can recognize each other...

Autumn.to.Ashes 05-04-2005 07:26 AM

cant see those pics :( dont have privliedges.

i live in hamilton, who knows maybe I could come down! im shy though, hardly even post, just read.

cellophanedeity 05-04-2005 07:31 AM

Come join us Autumn! It'll be fun!

no need to be shy!

trache 05-05-2005 07:12 AM

Wow, I'm in 519. I wonder still if I'll be able to make it. I don't know many of the people here as well as I'd like to. I am shy at first meeting a whole group of people but really come out of my shell once I have found some common ground to talk about.

Does anyone think it may be a little cliquey? I don't want to seem "out of the picture" if you know what I mean with the rest of the crowd.

Are there any hotels in the area? Perhaps I can make this an overnight thing with the girlfriend and see some sights. Any suggestions on those, btw?

Charlatan 05-05-2005 09:42 AM

Hey trache... I don't think it will be cliquey at all. I barely know most of the people who are coming so far... but hope to remedy that.

You should definately try to come.

As for hotels... there aren't any in the area BUT The Victory is a short walk from the Bathurst subway station and that puts it within reach of just about anywhere you would like to be... I can suggest some hotels if you give me some idea of a budget.

Cheers

what's the name of your Big band??? I love that music.

i will attempt to be there. this is the same day that my neighbours are getting married, and the street is invited to the reception. (very cool).

Charlatan 05-05-2005 01:03 PM

Very cool Janey... it would be good to finally meet you.

If you don't make this do you think you might be able to make Tecoyah's party in Rochester at the end of July? I'm trying to find someone to take the ferry with me.

trache 05-05-2005 03:15 PM

Charlatan: Something preferrably under $100. My girlfriend and I would only need a bed, shower and roof over our heads.

That isn't to say I want to sleep in a roach motel. :)

aberkok 05-05-2005 10:45 PM

Janey:

I'm a member of the "Toronto Jazz Orchestra," and we'll be having a party upstairs for our saxophonist's parents' wedding anniversary. If you want to check out what we do, there's a link to the band on my website, but the TJO website isn't quite as up-to-date.

We do Big Band jazz from all eras (Basie/Ellington to Kenton and Mintzer and Brookmeyer, etc.)

Looking forward to meeting all of yous!

Charlatan 05-06-2005 05:24 AM

trache

Below $100 is tough to find in Toronto... try searching on Expedia... Here are some relatively cheap suggestions... I would also say you should try searching for some Bed and Breakfasts. You can find really nice ones for well under $100:

Days Hotel and Conference Centre Toronto (From $105) - Just across from Maple Leaf Gardens

Ramada Hotel and Suites ($120 or so) - at Yonge and College

Bond Place Hotel ($106 or so) - on just south of Dundas behind City Hall

maleficent 05-06-2005 05:33 AM

Most chains now will do their best to beat the online advertised prices.. You just have to ask... Check out www.hotels.com (or any of the online services) then call the hotel directly.

Thanks Mal... I meant to mention that... it is always worth calling in person.

Yeah, and you'll surely not want to miss out on the skin flute demonstration..........

kramus 05-08-2005 06:23 PM

I don't know if I could make it because of the budget thing and 2 rare things - out of town visits the last 2 weekends of the month. But I ought to try. It won't be a late night I take it and I wouldn't be all pissed up so perhaps I can drive/park. Park where he asks?

And paddy, remember amonkie is taking the pictures so you just behave yourself at tec's ;)

Charlatan 05-09-2005 03:35 AM

kramus... it would be great if you could make it.

Charlatan 05-10-2005 10:47 AM

Anyone else going to be brave and meet your fellow TFP types?

You know you will regret it if you miss this...

aberkok 05-10-2005 07:12 PM

Looks like my band goes on at 9:30p.m., so I'll be able to devote my full attention to you lot. I'm getting pretty excited about meeting the gang!

Charlatan 05-13-2005 10:07 AM

OK. We are meeting tomorrow. I will be there at 7 or just slightly after 7...

I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

aberkok 05-14-2005 08:16 PM

First!!! (Reporting in from the Toronto meet-up which happened mere hours ago)

Hey guys. I had a blast, and although it was fun to play upstairs, I would have rather been there with you guys a bit longer. It's hard to explain what it feels like to now be writing to those who I've now seen in person, but it's a good feeling. I hope we can do this again soon.

I'll definitely be adding y'all to the buddy list (if you're not already on there) and following your posts more closely. Us hosers need to stick together!

Kramus: it was great to meet you and to be subject to your friendliness and subtle humour

Cellophanedeity and muttonglutton: nice to meet people your age that are intelligent and not yet jaded by life's challenges!

Charlatan: thanks again for organizing this and your openness made me feel very welcome

Thanks again, and to those of you who couldn't be there, I anticipate some photos imminently (i.e. below)...

P.S. I got home a bit earlier than expected :)

kramus 05-14-2005 08:47 PM

I was very glad I made it in. Muttonglutton and Cello are a great example of a young adult guy and a young adult lady who are going to be great Canadian citizens :)

go team ;)

I want you to keep updates of your amazing career boost abercock. Tell the story.

Charlatan I would like to have you as a neighbour. I would even visit of an evening with the wine.

cellophanedeity 05-14-2005 09:17 PM

I had an awesome time tonight, as did muttonglutton. (his router died, so he can't post for himself right now, so I'll say it for him)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../Charlatan.jpg
Charlatan is just as charismatic in person as online. Probably more so.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_0993.jpg
kramus is excellent company! He's lovely and fun!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_0992.jpg
aberkok was the first TFPer that muttonglutton and I ran into! He's so very friendly!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_0995.jpg
muttonglutton isn't very photogenic. :P You know you're awesome Stefan.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_0998.jpg
(^aberkok left earlier to perform upstairs)

I would love to get together with everyone again! You were all so much fun, and I felt very comfortable, despite being the baby. :icare: Thank you so much Charlatan for planning all of this!

maleficent 05-14-2005 09:18 PM

Good lookin' group...

amonkie 05-14-2005 09:41 PM

Definitely seems that way - you guys better head to Tecoyah's in July too! I'm jealous :)

aberkok 05-15-2005 06:53 AM

Yes!!!! YESSS!!!!! All that exercise is finally paying off! I actually like my picture.

I must agree. Good lookin' bunch

Too bad I couldn't be in the group shot :(

Charlatan 05-15-2005 06:59 AM

Hey Guys...

It was really great to meet all of you. I really wasn't sure how it would be meeting people from my online life but it was seamless...

Thank you all for the kind words above...

Kramus, I am really glad you made the effort to drive all the way in to town from Brantford. Your humour is indeed subtle and it would be cool if you were a neighbour...

Aberkok, thanks for clearing up the theme between the three pictures (but don't you think the fact that you were wearing silk panties in all three pics was just a bit obscure? ). Please do keep us all up to date on any local gigs you have coming up... I could hear you from downstairs but it would have been good to see you in
action.

Cellophane, glad you could make it... You shine in person just like you do online. You are hardly a baby, only when occasionaly reminded would I remember with a laugh that you are as young as you are...

Muttonglutton I hope you finally dried out... and don't worry if any one asks I will tell them that you are mostly harmless... despite what Cello's Mom thinks.

As I mentioned at the pub, anytime any of you just want to meet up for a lunch drop me a PM. I really do hope we can have another of these Toronto meetings and that we can swell the ranks now that they know we aren't all that crazy...

I have a few crappy pictures on my phone and will post them once I can download them my synch cable is at the office.

Thanks again, to everyone for coming!!!!

PS... if it wasn't clear, silk panties wasn't the theme linking aberkok's three photos... keep guessing!

Technically I was wearing a man-thong... not panties. I repeat... man-thong
:)

Charlatan 05-15-2005 07:08 AM

And here I thought your shifting back and forth was because you had rhythm in your soul...

 ;) I missed that conversation . . . :hmm:

kramus 05-15-2005 07:19 AM

btw you guys mention a subtle sense of humour. I shoulda brought the carp in from the car and made "slap the fish jokes?" . . .

I just had that visual when I read that, you know the Mad Magazine little pics and cartoons with the guy having things go thwock and karang off of his head. I pictured if I did a scene like that - if I'd ever even hear anything about having a subtle sense of humour. You all would be bound to think I was more overt and dramatic. I felt restraint was in order - I would hate for the mom to have to say "I told you so." eh?

muttonglutton 05-15-2005 06:06 PM

Yeah! Fun was had by all! (And I finally got my internet back!)

Very, very cool people, and cellophane and I have already been talking about making it down to techoya's. It's a shame, because I'll be in Rochester about a month before that (playing magic, what a geek), and I wish they could line up.

But still. It's not -that- far away, and it would be ever-so-much fun.

I love the pictures. And my sweater was wet because of four hours of rain-walking. honest. And the first shot of me looks like my laundry did after the first time I washed that sweater. Greeeeeeeen. Oops. :P

Great pictures though, and a great time had by all. Thankyou so much charlatan, for getting us all together! It was a nice little place, too.

Charlatan 05-16-2005 12:40 PM

Well for what they are worth, here are the pictures I took on my phone... low light is just not good for my camera.

Cellophanediety and Kramus strike the pose!

Janey 05-16-2005 12:58 PM

wow, you lucky guys! Makes me wish I could have dragged Steve out of the wedding reception that we were at. It may have been more fun too, what with a big band upstairs too!

aberkok 05-16-2005 02:32 PM

Janey, I've been told to let everyone know when I've got gigs now, so you'll all be subject to my gig reminders from now on. I'll make doubly sure to let you know of any good ones with my big-band. I'll be away for most of the summer, so it might be awhile.

I was hoping to meet you, so it's too bad you couldn't make it, but since this meeting left such a good taste in our mouths (mmmmm.... St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout), I'm sure there'll be another meet-up before the year is out.

In case anyone is interested/available, I'm playing at the Rex Hotel and Jazz Bar (194 Queen St. W, at University; Osgoode subway) this Saturday the 21st at 7:00p.m. with the trio I'll be in Hong Kong with. That's Holly Clark on vocals and Mark Cashion on Bass. I know most of you at the meet-up couldn't make it, but it's my duty as a shameless self promoter to tell you all anyway. :)

It's not a big-band (sorry Janey), but I expect it'll be really fun.

kramus 05-16-2005 02:42 PM

aberkok if you haven't planned on it yet you really ought to start a thread about your summer gig and find a way to update from time to time. I am interested and I would be only one of many. You are living a dream my friend.

Janey, that was the one downer of the evening not getting to see the mistress of all things Canadian (TFP style) in person. Someday, maybe eh?

Janey 05-17-2005 04:46 AM

me? mistress of all things canadian? omg I hope I'm not comming off as a know-it-all!!!

(just want to be passionate about us)

blar 05-18-2005 10:33 AM

wish i went

Charlatan 05-18-2005 10:36 AM

that passion and your willingness to go the extra yard when looking for facts is what I was thinking. Actually I also had a visual of you as Dame Liberty in that painting - is it by David? - of the spirit of the French Revolution as she leads her motley crew. The flag would be Canadian and the crew would be us and of course you would be dressed as a good Canadian girl i.e. topless, but that was the image that popped into my head

hey! I'm there! I could do it, and it's perfectly legal :p I think that I would have to have half a beer first tho, so that I have an excuse to be bright red in the face (ethnic problem with booze, but it could hide embarassment).

How about the setting? could we make a roadtrip to Kingston? The Martello Towers as a back drop would be dramatic...

LOL coming out here would be awesome :D

trache 05-24-2005 11:09 AM

Hey guys...

It's been awhile since this thread has had some activity, and I also want to say sorry for not being able to go. I have been crazy-busy and things are just now getting back to normal. I hope there will be regular meetings from now on.

Although I don't know any of you personally, I would like to put faces to names (and photos don't often do justice).

kramus 05-24-2005 12:32 PM

I figure I'd better start visiting t.o. where the visual art congregates - see what's what in the art of the city. So eventually I'd even get a routine going. That would start making a dinner / supper get-together a real possibility. Visiting Kingston would get on the list maybe too, eh?

All in time . . . *sigh

Scorps 05-25-2005 08:58 AM

Man if your into art and old stuff...this place is great for history:)

mew 05-25-2005 06:40 PM

I was thinking of you guys when I was in TO that weekend. Jealouse as I was, I dont think I wouldve come within 1 mile of that area...Im too shy to be seen :o But Thanks a Million for posting those pictures! I was looking forward to them. You all look awsome~! woot~

Hi, new here, but like to get involved. I would love to see that thread myself, Aberkok, as I am interested in big band as well....

james t kirk 06-10-2005 01:49 PM

Ok, I missed this why?

I new you were planning it, got the PM's about it, but then didn't hear a definite and since I seldom come on the General Discussion thread until today, didn't know about it.

I was checking the Canada section.

Ok, I am a moron.

I appologize.

Charlatan 06-10-2005 03:08 PM

Sorry you missed it... I was sure that we had confirmed in PM. When you didn't show up I figured you had your reasons and didn't want give you a hassle...

Sucks that you just missed the confirmation.

Next time for sure.

james t kirk 06-10-2005 04:16 PM

I think it would be easier just to have a barbeque at my place one night.

Soon as I finish my kitchen, we're on.

Charlatan 06-11-2005 05:27 AM

Sounds like an excellent idea!

kramus 06-11-2005 05:51 AM
