Help engineer the english language (well, one word of it)

Firstly, a word to the mods. I have spent a fair while trawling through the forum searching for the correct place to post this and i'm fairly sure that this is the right place, though if I am wrong, please excuse me and I would be most obliged if you could move it to what is deemed the correct habitat. :)

Note: This thread does deal with things of a sexually suggestive and monotone colour nature (pink), if you are offended by either, it is suggested that you do not read on.

Nehoos, onwards and upwards.

Now, all of use being warm blooded males and females, vulcans and klingons, small furry furlings and somewhat tilted induviduals, we can appreciate the human form.
Every single one of us has a word that we use to describe someone we deem as attractive, male or female, possibly both, i'm not picky. Common examples would be: sexy, hot, buff, 10 (or 11), hey baby, gorgeous, beautiful and so on and so forth.

The aim from this time on, is to replace all of these words, even if for only a short amount of time, with one word *drum role*

Pink

Before we all start throwing things, complaining about this, that and what not, take a few moments to play around with it on your tongue, possibly on your partners tongue too. After you've done that, think of someone who you find rather attractive, then ascribe the word pink to them.

Works doesn't it?

Our (read a rapidly growing portion of England, and a few other places worldwide) aim is to install Pink as the word of choice when describing a Pink induvidual. Hopefully, with it's catchyness, and monosylabic ease of pronounciation (despite this sentance being somewhat letter laden) we should see the word Pink be used on TV and movie sets worldwide sometime in the near future.

This grandeous scheme of big words to try and get everyone to use a little small word won't be possible without the worldwide co-operation of, well, you.

So, my fellow tilted induviduals, it is time to raise the flag, proclaim everything in the name of pink, and rejoice in smugness when it finally airs and we can say we started it!

Right, now thats finished, i'm going to lie down, my fingers hurt...

kramus 03-26-2005 05:25 PM

I do know the slightly shopworn phrase for being healthy as "in the pink". Is there room in your new world for this usage?

liquidlight 03-26-2005 05:39 PM

I like it! Pink. . . and at least for the moment can be used in public without the knowledge and/or offense of the person it's directed at!

sadistikdreams 03-26-2005 07:19 PM

Pink... So like... How would you use it?
"Hey baby, you're pink"?

Pip 03-27-2005 03:48 AM

I don't know. I like having lots of words to describe someone who is hot, gorgeous, utterly beautiful, pretty, like a sculpture by Michelangelo, a fine specimen, eye candy, shiny, oh my etc. One more word to use, sure. But replacing the others? Nevah.

stevie667 03-27-2005 05:42 AM

Of course pink will never replace other descriptive words, the aim is to indtroduce it into common place slang in the near future so that we can see it finally on tv and movies, and be smug because we know we started it.

For those of you that wanted a context.

Examples: Your walking down the road, you see someone so sexy that you have to proclaim it, you shout 'PINK!' at them.

Someone has dressed themselves up at a party, they blow your mind, they would be refered to as weapons grade pink.

You see someone so amazingly pink that pink no longer sufices, they're so pink they're purple.

Pink is meant to be used creativly, have fun, make up your own phrases.

thalakos315 03-28-2005 03:02 AM

eh, doesn't work for me. if i had a rational reason for using it then maybe. but i just don't see how its to descriptive. did somebody just choose this word at random and decide to attempt to make it slang? or is there an actual reason why pink was chosen?

it just seems to make as much sense to me as saying aluminum to describe a person *shrug* might just be me though ;)

if i ever see it in a movie, at least i can always say i know where it started hehe

Phage 03-28-2005 05:11 AM

The main problem with using pink in such a manner is that it already has a meaning, and it is not what you propose.

Rodney 03-28-2005 07:14 AM

Interesting you should use pink. In the history of the fashion world, pink tends to become popular in times of uncertainty, worry, and angst. It may not surprise you to know that pink is coming on strong in fashion right now.

The word pink has a variety of existing meanings, many of which are somewhat beside the point you're trying to make:

To stab lightly with a pointed weapon; prick.
To decorate with a perforated pattern.
To cut with pinking shears.
Any of a group of colors reddish in hue, of medium to high lightness, and of low to moderate saturation.
Any of various plants of the genus Dianthus, such as the carnation and sweet William, often cultivated for their showy fragrant flowers.
Any of various other plants, such as the wild pink and the moss pink.
A flower of any of these plants.
The highest or best degree: in the pink of health.
Slang. A pinko.
A pink salmon
adj. pink·er, pink·est
1. Of the color pink.
2. Slang. Having moderately leftist political opinions.

When I apply your test and think of certain very attractive people of color who I know or have dated, the color pink does not come to mind. (There is a rich coffee color, however, with which I have very strong happy associations.) So pink might work in jolly old England, but not in a more multi-cultural society. Actually, it probably wouldn't work in London, for that matter.

Interestng topic. My middle scholers read a book each year about language engineering in which a middle school student does exactly that, creating a new word--Frindle for "pen".

Pink works fine for me, but my SO is more of a yellowish-tan, so I counter propose that we use Yellowish-Tan.

Cynthetiq 03-28-2005 09:29 AM

interesting.

one word isn't usually descriptive enough of a catch all in any language.

little_tippler 03-28-2005 10:06 AM

it should be a new word...not one that already has other meanings and connotations.I could never use the word pink to describe someone sexy. Doesn't work. I never could use the word "phat" either but that's me...

but it's interesting, just not "pink".

To your list, let me add "One who is not a SubGenius; a boring normal person".

I'd also like to note that most of the definitions at UrbanDictionary.com/pink reduce to either 'vagina' or 'Alicia Moore'.

kramus 03-28-2005 12:33 PM

That is something life models are aware of in a drawing studio - showing "pink" (or rather avoiding showing pink).

Would that be the SubGenius according to Bob?

alec 03-28-2005 12:48 PM

haha, i like this idea....

on a slightly related story, me and a couple of friends were stoned out of our gords at a sit-down ruby tuesdays-esque place, and our attractive but ditzy early 20's waitress asked me 'how much pink do you want?'. i could have sworn i was in some sort of pre-fabricated porno script, and i couldnt stop laughing. i just hope she didnt spit in my burger.

I believe you mean according to "Bob", but yes. I am not a SubGenius, but as a Erisian (Discordian) Pope I am familiar with the work and beliefs of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs and his SubGenius disciples. ;)

Being direct as possible, Pink was taken from a description of the female genetalia, and then used as a full body word. Figure out what it all means.

The reason that it could work very well is because of it's ease of pronounciation and the way it can very easily take the place of other descriptive words. As i've said before, it's not an attempt to expunge other words from existance, merely an attempt to modify English slang over the near future.

Use it or don't, just pass on the message.

Nazggul 03-28-2005 07:22 PM

I like it, consider it passed on. I'll use it here and there and see what becomes of it.

oh i understand that.. but wouldn't that cause some confusion.. using the word pink to discribe two different things, which often have similar context?

"man, i'd like to see some pink right about now" for example.. i just think it might be a little confusing.
that, and i'm not sure there are many guys out there who would appreciate being called "pink" ;)

i can see the term catching on in the highschool age bracket though definetly.

True, it may be a little confusing from time to time, but most people have their own slang for different parts of ones anatomy (dang, i'm making it seem so hard...), so it's bound to run into some snags, but hey.

according to the urban dictionary page - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pink&r=f
[5th one] The term 'pink' in which you're describing as, has actually already been around for awhile....

I'm not using it in that sense, i'm using it to describe the entire person.

Cynthetiq 03-29-2005 12:19 PM

and now that I think about it...

it reminds me of Swingers and being so money.
