Terrible Websites!

Well, I thought about posting this in computing but I think they're more of the QuakeIII crowd over there anyway....

Alright, so call me a multimedia design snob, but I have some pretty damn high standards when it comes to websites. I was cruzin the motor forum, and came across the Maybach automotive website and thought to myself "you know, since they're making cars that cost a gazillion dollars, perhaps they could have had a better website to go along with it!!" After ranting for a while, I realize that this problem is more widespread than I thought.

So what are some websites you've come across that haven't met your (high or nonexistent) standards? Give us the unexpedly god awful!

I don't know, I rather like that Maybach site.

Don't get me wrong, I love Maddox ( http://maddox.xmission.com/ ), but I think since he's gonna be publishing a book soon, he should upgrade his site to represent that of a successful author. :D

My main gripe is with websites that don't work with Firefox. www.speedtv.com never looks right on Firefox, considering it is a good site for racing news and info that is very disappointing.

Whats the problem with the maybach site? is it just a case of you not being the target audience, It is a professionally put together site.

Ya I would say so too.

It's a horrible design, But the content makes up for it.

Yeah, I think that's kind of the way he works it. The site may not look all classy, but you go there for the content, not the site design, and he has never had ads or popups or anything like that on his site, so yeah.

Sage 03-07-2005 07:42 PM

my issues with the maybach site:
1) pops up in a new browser window
2) double drop down menus in the main site browser bar
3) scrolling pix in the main site browser bar are also navigation points, but you can't get them to scroll to the left or right any faster
4) pix navigate to different places than the menu bar navigates to
5) when you get to the content, you have to scroll through pages worth of information

I think they're trying to do too much in too small of a space. Of course, I'm majoring in this stuff at a liberal arts college, so my idea of fucntional is obviously different than maybach.

Any site that uses too much Flash.

It's cool but don't make everything move.

bendsley 03-07-2005 08:25 PM

I rather like the Maybach site myself.

You know, it's right in his FAQ's why his site looks the way it does.

Why does your site look so shitty? / Why do you use such huge fonts?

My site looks shitty for the following reasons:

1. Bandwidth conservation. I'm costing my ISP, Xmission, a lot of bandwidth per month, even with the text-heavy layout I have now. Xmission has been great about hosting this site, and I want to make it as efficient as possible while still getting my point across.

2. Protest. I'm keeping my web site shitty as a protest against all the slick-looking, contentless web sites out there. Nobody cares about your stupid rotating icons and fading links. Mine isn't the only site on the internet that uses a simple layout, perhaps you've heard of this one?

http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse....es/google1.gif

Some webmasters have spent years tweaking their layout and designing their site, and very few get any traffic. This site, as shitty as it looks, gets over 1 million visits per month. I use large fonts also as a protest against all the stylish garbage you see out there. When I go to a web site, I WANT TO READ THE CONTENT. Trust me, that micro-font everyone uses isn't nearly as original as they think. I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision.

I'll give you point one, I find it annoying but it is commonplace all over the web.
The double dropdown menus work fine, do not hinder the navigation, what is the exact problem you have with them?
the pictures are a secondary source of navigation and as such the scroll left and right function you talk of is not really valid, however they should go to the same places as the navigation bar.
I don't see any scroll bars with regards to the information, which pages are you referring to?

This is not a badly designed site, I'll admit it's not perfect, or a shining example of functionality on the web, but I think you are judging it harshly and against the wrong criteria- there are much worse sites out there

Well it's a very nice looking site but the functionality of it is terrible. I agree with everything you posted about it.

Sadly, this is the future of the web. Corporate sites seem to love flash and prefer asthetics over functionality.

ratbastid 03-08-2005 09:51 AM

I wanted to see what was so bad about Maybach's site. But... Oh well...

Sadly!! whats wrong with aesthetic (or flash for that matter) we must move on from blue underline links, it is a brochure site - the aesthetic is an important aspect. The functionality could be better but it works fine, it's not trying to be google or amazon

It doesn't seem to be working right in Opera either. I hate browser-centric sites too.

killeena 03-09-2005 06:32 AM

This is probably the worst site I have ever seen in my life. Click on the flash part, and watch the whole intro, it will make you laugh. Compare that to a similar Strongbad Email, and try to remember which one is supposed to be the joke.

mazagmot 03-09-2005 06:59 AM

Wow. I thought Jackson County Sheriff's department would have a little money to spend on a designer. That was laughable. "High impact multimedia website" my backside.

I also agree that the maybach site is horrible, but it seems cut from the same template as every other automobile manufacturers web site.

ScottKuma 03-09-2005 07:19 AM

Matt Drudge's site is awfully-designed, in my humble opinion. Horribly cluttered, unclear as to what links go to...

Of course, I might just be an idiot. ;)
