Strip Club Artfully Slips by Anti-Nudity Law

BOISE, Idaho (Reuters) - A strip club in Boise, Idaho has found an artful way to prance past a city law that prohibits full nudity.
On what it calls Art Club Nights, the Erotic City strip club charges customers $15 for a sketch pad, pencil, and a chance to see completely naked women dancers.

In 2001 the Boise City Council passed an ordinance banning total nudity in public unless it had "serious artistic merit" -- an exemption meant to apply to plays, dance performances and art classes.

"We have a lot of people drawing some very good pictures," said Erotic City owner Chris Teague, who has posted many of the drawings around the club.

Teague said he got the idea when a customer asked if he could get in for free to sketch the dancers. Realizing that "art classes" were exempt from the law, Teague decided to bill Mondays and Tuesdays as art nights, and let the dancers go without their G-strings and pasties.

In the two months since they began, Art Club Nights have drawn full crowds of 60 people but no police citations, he said.
Way to go!!!!!

If it's right in one venue, then it's right in ALL venues. Maybe we'll start to see something like this in NYC.

thoughts?

rmarshall 02-18-2005 11:03 AM

Aren't they allowed to be nude already in NYC?

Psycho Dad 02-18-2005 11:07 AM

I saw this this morning and thought it quite a clever idea. I hope it catches on. If people think that morality can be legislated I'm happy to see the tables turned on them.

yes. But there are many zoning laws that need to be enforced also no alcohol is served just juice.

Redlemon 02-18-2005 11:15 AM

I want to see the "art" that they made. Hope it isn't protein-based...

Chingal0 02-18-2005 11:22 AM

Hah that's excellent. I live in Oregon where the strip clubs are every 10 feet, it's kind of funny to see other states' laws and such on strip clubs as they are alway alot more strict than here.

omega2K4 02-18-2005 11:25 AM

Haha. That's genius.

Redlemon 02-18-2005 11:29 AM

On a less-snarky note, this is another creative legal interpretation. There was a strip bar doing a version of Macbeth, if I remember correctly, because nudity was allowable if it were part of a dramatic presentation.

Very similar to "it is illegal to pay a woman to have sex with you, unless you videotape it and sell it". (Don't threadjack this into a discussion of the legitimacy of prostitution vs. porn, I'm sure it is covered on this board already. Just a side point.)

edit: Ha! veruca confirmed it! I even had Florida in the back of my mind when I was posting it, but decided to leave that out. !woot!

veruca 02-18-2005 11:35 AM

Here in Orlando we get around that by having the girl's perform Shakespear in the nude.
It's quite amusing, I assure you.

IC3 02-18-2005 11:39 AM

Damn..Up here, The girls are not only fully naked..But they will sit on stage and like fully rub themselves..Not all of them, But some do.

But ya, What this guy did is genious

ARTelevision 02-18-2005 11:43 AM

A beneficial effect of a change like this is that it brings a higher degree of culture and aesthetic appreciation to the event. It's a welcome change - and to my mind, it's incidental that it gets around existing laws. What I see it doing is adding "serious artistic merit" to an activity that currently sorely lacks that dimension of experience.

pinkie 02-18-2005 11:51 AM

That so rocks... :D

02-18-2005 11:54 AM

My first (and only) experience with a strip club spooked me way to bad to ever go back... but i cant think of anything funnier than girls on platforms with too much makeup doing macbeth. i love it.

Charlatan 02-18-2005 12:06 PM

Very clever indeed... I think I would actually prefer Naked MacBeth to the regular strip club schtick...

That's what the world needs... cultured strip clubs...

flstf 02-18-2005 12:11 PM

You have to give them credit for such a creative solution which will probably wind up giving some prosecutor headaches when the inevitable court case ensues.

It never ceases to amaze me how people are so offended by dispays of nudity when all of us have nude bodies under our clothes. There are almost 6.5 billion of us on this planet, you would think that eventually we would overcome the shock of viewing our natural selves.

rhaevyn 02-18-2005 12:12 PM

That's a very clever idea.

veruca 02-18-2005 12:12 PM

it's great...they do macbeth...and they are all writhing around...
"boilboil..." / while sliding up and down a pole.

This is really something that I need to see!!!

Here in PA they are allowed to have nude dancers only if they don't serve alcohol. But they are kind enough to provide Coke or OJ or whatever you want to use as a mixer :)

Dingo2879 02-18-2005 03:20 PM

I think I saw an episode of Real Sex on HBO a few years back and they visited a strip club that did the very same thing. Seemed like a good idea. Nice to see it has caught on.

Thome 02-18-2005 04:01 PM

That is incredibly sneaky, though I would definitely prefer to watch stripclub Macbeth than to participate in an art class. Too much pressure to perform, you know?

I hope this lasts a long, long time before people complain.

genuinegirly 02-18-2005 04:29 PM

Now that is a great idea! And they make it work by proving people are using it to create art - by posting some of the drawings. Ingenious! Creative! And the only way to make it work in Boise.

Amen! I never got that part of US. It's ok to show unlimited violence on the TV, but show a nipple and get a fine... :hmm:

mazagmot 02-19-2005 08:39 AM

I think I'd want to stop by just to check out the art work on the walls.

Jay Francis 02-19-2005 09:48 AM

Out out damn spot!

tspikes51 02-19-2005 09:58 AM

I would like to shake that guy's hand.

Cylvre 02-19-2005 08:20 PM

Brilliant!

I'm curious to see some of the art that gets made as well. Anyone from Boise? ;)

Actually, I'd love to see that. I love naked people, I love Shakespere... Where's the downside?

chickentribs 02-20-2005 10:48 PM

It is great to see "our side" use a bit of the ridiculous to fight fire with fire. Unfortunately the way these things seem to play out (last 5 years anyway) is that the moral crusaders now use this as a way to attack legitimate art venues they find offensive because they can lump it all together. "Henry Miller in the library leads to strippers on your corner which leads to drugs and hookers in your home..."

That is how they ran Robert Maplethorpe out of Cincinnati... We have to be careful.

ObieX 02-21-2005 01:15 AM

Chalk one up to the people.

d*d 02-21-2005 01:22 AM

would they stay still so you could draw them, only if they're prancing round a pole it'd mess my drawing up and I'd have wasted my $15 -or am I missing the point?

squirrelyburt 02-21-2005 08:50 PM

I love it!! Theres one near me that gives away free pizza and calls itself ''dinner theater''. Give me a peice and let me draw my stick men!!!

splck 02-21-2005 08:58 PM

It is a clever way to get around a stupid rule...

g-strings? pasties? juice?...that'd just sad.
around here it's full spread and beer with no cover charge...the way it should be.;)

hosti|e 02-22-2005 03:11 PM

Thats brilliant. Gotta love the lateral thinking involved :)

william 02-22-2005 05:37 PM

Maybe I'm wrong in my thinking, but what if Larry (Flint) was right and GW is wrong? Maybe the majority of people don't have a problem seeing young girls in short pants, showing off their nether regions - is it that bad? And if so - why are so many "nice" girls doing this? The more the "majority" tries to place their values on us, the more we see "hoochie mamas" showing their stuff in the open. If Janet Jackson was so wrong, why are the hoochies more popular than ever?

Val_1 02-22-2005 06:47 PM

AH, just like ART 160 (Drawing From Life) all over again. I loved that class.

analog 02-22-2005 09:56 PM

there's a strip club down near me that's been doing that sort of thing for years- shakespeare in the buff.

m0rpheus 02-23-2005 06:06 AM

I love living in Canada where strippers are allowed to go totally nude :)

Averett 02-23-2005 06:18 AM

Hee... that's funny. I really want to see the Nudie Macbeth. Sounds hilarious.

I still want to go to a strip club some friends were telling me about in Alberta where you get a free lap dance if you can dislodge a loonie that a girl has umm.. tucked into a special area :) Basically you toss loonies at her and see if you can knock it loose. That's entertainment, folks!

RCR 02-23-2005 06:47 AM

Excellent, very intelligent...

drakers 02-23-2005 07:27 AM

That is fricking hilarious, I wonder how long they're going to get away with that. Pad and pencil?? Who are they fooling.
