My dad is a big-time collector of model trains. He had a full working HO layout when I was a kid that took up one entire room of our house. Now that my parents have a significantly smaller space, he works in N gauge.

I'd recommend picking up a copy of Model Railroader magazine. They've always got listings in the back. I'll drop my dad an email and see if he has any recommended websites/sources for you...if anyone knows, he would.

I wouldn't call myself a collector but I've got a large working HO scale trainset that my Grandfather built. He was a watchmaker and built the cars soooo detailed. They all have woking suspension, all the doors and chutes operate. The thing are amazing, they make the stuff you see in the stores look like complete and utter crap. I've got about 125 feet of track set up with interchanges, crosses, hills and a spiral tunnel. I've got roads cut out of cardboard and painted black, glue with sand in/on it for gravel roads, houses, farms, downtown core. It takes up about 300sq ft.

I dabble with it, but I don't currently have a working layout.

I have a bunch of O27 stuff from my youth as well as a newer set for around the Christmas tree and a bunch of N scale that I will probably to something with someday.

And I would also recommend Model Railroader as a place to start for buying and selling.
