Not just for Granny Anymore
Kristin Miranda (Rochester, NY) 11/29/04 -- Knitting is making a major comeback and it might surprise you to know who's picking up the needles.

Jessie, a longtime knitter, said, "It's therapy. It's texture, color, relaxing--it's just 'Calgon, take me away - I can knit.'"

One group of diverse woman who belong to the Rochester Knitting Guild, include Jessie, who has been knitting since she was seven years old; Tina who has been knitting for 25 years; Emily, 17, who just started two years ago; and Anne--the "senior" member of the group--who has only been knitting for six years.

They say they all knit when and wherever they can. Anne said she's seen people knitting in doctors' offices, banks, concerts, even in church.

The Rochester Knitting Guild covers much of the Finger Lakes area it has more than 350 members. Many of them have joined just within the past few years.

While many people knit on their own, the women say there are many benefits to belonging to a knitting organization like the knitting guild. They say it's a way learn new skill and attend workshops--and more importantly--an opportunity to socialize.

They also promise anyone who wants to can learn with the right teacher.

With the advent of multi-colored and multi-textured yarn, there's more for knitters to choose from which means fun and funky projects.

"Well its creative, it's very satisfying. When you finish a project…even though you've made some errors - it doesn't matter," Anne said.

So, knittings making a comeback... Can you? Ever tried knitting? Something that you might be interested it?

I have always wanted to learn how to knit. I tried once with the aid of a craft book, and I failed miserably. My problem was too many questions and no one to ask. I know no one who knits, so self taught seems to be my only option. Some day.....

That's nothing! I saw a story about entire schools full of kids doing it in Jersey...knitting seems like fun, and a good thing to be catching on to the young 'uns

...elementary school aged kids, that is. What with their attention spans, it's a miracle!

back in high school this one guy knew how to knit quite well, so he made the best hackeysacks you'll ever find and sold them at a handsome profit. he had quite a racket going on.

My sister is an absolute knitting fool. She's obsessed with her bag of yarn. They actually know her now at Joanne Fabrics or whatever that store is called. Thanksgiving day she comes over to my house and sits there knitting a blanket for litterally three hours...then decides she doesn't like the color/pattern whatever so she rips it all out. Mind you this was about three feet worth of work. Then she puts all that back and then some with a new color combination. That's whacked if you ask me but hey she was enjoying it. She's made all sorts of things including sweaters, hats, scarves and the like. Some of them actually look pretty nice. :) One other thing...she was raving about the new needle set she's picked up. It's the mac daddy set of knitting needles (apparently there is a mac daddy set of these -- much to my shagrin).

Yes, it's true. We Rochestarians have such wonderful hidden talents. Soon we shall come to be known, as the potholder capital of the world!

my wife once knitted a Camera out of left over Garbage plate macaroni.

I wish I was better at knitting. I've tried several times but I can't get that smooth flow going. One of my friends is a knitting whiz though, so she keeps her friends supplied with scarves and mittens in all sorts of cool colours. I also know a guy who can knit, but only one thing - squids.

I can't knit. I can crochet but not knit.

You're kidding. And how do I get my hands on one of those squids??

My girlfriend and nearly all of our mutual female friends started knitting like 6 or so months ago, i've been blown away by how much attention it's been getting lately. seems like everyone is into it.

Anyone see the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"? There's a scene where the boss is on the phone arguing with his wife, then slams the phone down. He hits the intercom for his secretary, and says "Ms. Jones! Where's my... (you know)..."

"I put it in your right-hand bottom drawer."

"Thanks." He reaches in, pulls out a half-knitted item, begins knitting, leans back in his chair and relaxes. "Aaahhhhhh."


We performed this show in high school. During the first props rehearsal, as the last line is read, the director stops us and says "Matt, next time through, raise your hands above the desk." :D

I'm pretty good at cross-stitch, but I don't have near enough courage to try knitting. However, I'll be directing a play in January that requires one of the characters to knit during a lot of her time onstage, so I've got to find somebody to teach her. Maybe they'll teach me, too.

I've not tried knitting before, although I did crochet.
I enjoyed it but I wasn't too imaginative with it.
