** UPDATE ** Buddy, can you spare a (non US) penny?

I'll keep it simple.

My good friend's next-door neighbor has a 9-year old son. The kid has cancer in his brain and spine. It's very bad.

The kid collects coins. I'm going to give him a bunch of unusual coins to cheer him up. I have a some silver nickles, indian-head pennies, and coins from Europe and Asia that I'm sure he's never seen, but I'd like to have some more foreign coins.

If you are interested in sending coin from abroad, let me know. Please, nothing really valuable, just a little pocket change.

Mods, if this thread not appropriate, please delete.

I've got a canadian penny that I always think is a quarter until I go to pay, and they go "um... we can't take this". Does that work?

maleficent 11-29-2004 04:12 PM

I have a jar full of Australian coins --there may be some UK and Belgium coins in there as well -- where do you want them sent?

Averett 11-29-2004 04:17 PM

I've got some weird coins here and there, I have no idea what they are. I know a few are Irish though. And maybe one from Barbados come to think of it. I'd be more than happy to send them along :)

HockeyGuy 11-29-2004 04:29 PM

If you need any English coins please let me know and i'll get them shipped out to you!

clavus 11-29-2004 04:30 PM

yes. yes. and yes.

Thanks.

cj2112 11-29-2004 04:42 PM

i have a few pesos from mexico lying around, if you'd like them, they're yours.

Carno 11-29-2004 05:22 PM

I have some Nicaraguan cordobas he can have.

MSD 11-29-2004 08:02 PM

If you want a few older US coins, I can dig around for my coin box. I have some turn-of-the-century US coins that I can part with for a good cause.

Ishmal 11-29-2004 09:16 PM

well i was going to offer some Aussie coins... lucky i read the post and saw maleficents offer... but let me know if you want them anyway.

tspikes51 11-29-2004 09:21 PM

How about a steel penny???

clavus 11-29-2004 09:44 PM

Holy crap! You guys are great. Thank you to everybody who is sending me coins.

I don't want to turn this into a giant thing. So if all y'all who are sending me coins send them, I think that would be plenty. No need to overdo it.

Anybody else who wants to help - say a prayer, or think a positive thought, or donate a couple of coins to cancer research.

Hug your kids. You never know...

denim 11-29-2004 10:04 PM

I've got some kind of Greek coin around here somewhere. The only thing I was able to find quickly is a token for the Boston "T". Not the same thing. ;)

Vincentt 11-29-2004 10:08 PM

I've got 1 yen , and a 5 yen, on my desk here.

5 yen is cool, has a hole in the center, and is pronounced "GOEN"
which also means 'to find your destiny' and 'to bring good fortune'.
And you can make a necklace out of it.

Grancey 11-29-2004 10:41 PM

I've got some old coins around here from different places. I'd be glad to send them.

clavus 11-29-2004 10:50 PM

Gracey, Denim, thank you. Seriously. I think we've got it covered.

(no, I'm not ignoring Vincentt - we PM'd)

You guys all rock!

omega2K4 11-29-2004 11:20 PM

I'll have to look, but I might have a few different coins somewhere. If I find them, I'll PM you.

merkerguitars 11-29-2004 11:25 PM

If you still want some more i'll see what I can dig up...I used to collect so I have to have some still laying around...might as well brighten up the kids day.

onodrim 11-30-2004 12:08 AM

I have a huge foreign coin collection buried away in my closet somwhere, I'll have to pull it out next time I'm home. :)

Gertie 11-30-2004 02:42 AM

I'm glad to hear Clavus got such a good response. This is a quality community.

TheBrit 11-30-2004 03:35 AM

I may have some pre-decimalisation coins knocking about (shillings etc.) if you want them? PM me with details, and I'll have a look for them.

Pip 11-30-2004 04:18 AM

I have coins from Sweden and Finland (pre-€, how about that?) and a weird Indian (I think) coin. I can have a look at work today, we get all sorts of stuff.

Fly 11-30-2004 04:35 AM

This is definitely the "feel good'" thread of the day... Nice goin' clavus...

clavus 11-30-2004 10:58 AM

You people are making it very hard to remain cynical.

Averett 11-30-2004 11:02 AM

I'll send what I've got in a couple of weeks. As soon as I can scrounge up enough American coinage for postage ;)

oblar 11-30-2004 02:01 PM

Clavus, don't worry about trying to remain cynical. All I need to do is just head out for the day and the cynicism will seem to radiate from my body :)

I am pretty sure the same will work for you.

freeload 11-30-2004 02:12 PM

Hm... nobody has mention the famous* Norwegian kroner yet - so I'll be happy to mail him/you some.

*Nah....they're not famous at all....just kidding ;)

Clavus: When God made you he must have been out of clay and made you out of something really good - 'cause you are a truly special person when it comes to being good!

Strange Famous 11-30-2004 02:38 PM

I have some Euro currency and GBP... nothing else I'm afraid. If that'd be any good I'll send some. if you have enough, thats cool.

SaltPork 12-01-2004 07:38 AM

Clavus, I will spare you the change....heh. I'm not real religious, but I'll keep him in my thoughts and donate some serious change to the cancer society.

Rlyss 12-02-2004 12:03 AM

Gday clavus, I think I can help a bit. I've got some coins I can send:

- 100 fils from Jordan, 50 sen from Malaysia, 50 cents from Kenya, 2 Francs from New Caledonia, 500 somethings (yen?) from Japan, 5 paise from India, 10 paise from India, 100 rupiah from Indonesia, 25 Kurus from Turkey and 100 halalas from Saudi Arabia.

If anyone's already sent any of those, or clavus if you've already got some, let me know :)

omega2K4 12-02-2004 08:12 AM

I can't find my damned coins, I had some really neat coins from the UAE (United Arab Emirates), Israel, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and China. I'll dig through the tons of boxes of crap I got at my place, if I find 'em, I'll PM you.

CSflim 12-02-2004 08:15 AM

I'll have a look at home and see what I have. I think I may have some pre-Euro Irish money.

I'm not a broad, but I think I have some from Equador and some from Spain. If I can locate it, I'll send it.

Malted 12-02-2004 06:32 PM

Clavus, I have some spare Israeli Sheqalim and Agorot. Let me know.

angeltek 12-03-2004 12:40 PM

I have a 25th aniversary Israel coin collection, I can send those if you want as well.

clavus 12-10-2004 04:53 PM

*** Update ***

I sent the kid a BUNCH of coins from the mighty mighty Mal and some from me. I have more coins to send this weekend - from Carn, Cadwiz and CSflim. Thank you all!

I got this email today -

Your two different packages of coins arrived safely. I took them to E*** and he was very enthusiastic. His eyes sparkle when he gets new coins. It is amazing how vibrant his personality is when he is too weak to even walk. His brother pushes him over to my house in his little wheel chair to show me his latest coins.

The joy you brought to E*** will hopefully be remembered by him—meaning I hope he recovers to remember. In any case, his parents will always remember.

maleficent 12-10-2004 05:03 PM

you are a good man, clavus...

Thanks for letting us help...
