The most beautiful word in the English language

Quote:

Mother is the most beautiful word in the English language, followed by passion, smile, love and eternity, according to a worldwide survey released today.

The British Council, the government agency that promotes British culture around the globe, quizzed more than 40,000 people in 102 non-English speaking countries on their favourite words.

Fantastic, destiny, freedom, liberty and tranquility filled out the top 10 ranking of most beautiful English words, out of a list of 70 words -- a number deliberately chosen to mark the British Council's 70th anniversary.

Others that made the grade included lollipop at number 42, flip-flop (59), hen night (70) and banana (41), along with twinkle (23), hiccup (63), hodgepodge (64), whoops (56) and oi (61).

"It's interesting that mother, the only word of the 70 that describes a direct relationship between people, came top of the poll," said British Council spokesman Greg Selby.

Father didn't make the list at all.

and of course.... supple

Gilda 05-07-2005 07:02 PM

It's a different question for us English speakers. The people surveyed were responding solely to the sound of the word, not knowing the meaning.

For an English speaker, it's impossible to completely divorce meaning from sound. Ever heard the French children's song Allouette? It a catchy little thing, a nice pleasant bouncy tune, and the words sound sweet and innocent. If you don't know what they mean. The song is about (I kid you not) a kid who's found a dead bird, and is dismembering it, naming each body part as he rips it off the bird's body. Having the correct context changes how we react to it.

That said, I have to go with:

sublime
peripatetic
analagous
grace
nucleic
ethereal
quizzical
zither
sweetpea
anaphalactic
bombadier

cellophanedeity 05-07-2005 07:19 PM

I like the words

eloquent (I think it's the most beautiful sounding word)
epiphany
lily
cunt
monkey

I do not like the words:
panties
ointment
bucket

Fohur2 05-07-2005 07:41 PM

Cacophonous

The irony,check the defintion.

howdydave 05-07-2005 08:11 PM

Esoterical
Discombobulated
Cantankerous
Flatulent
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsyllicovomononucleosis (sp?)

That last one may not be the most beautiful but (to the best of my knowledge) it's the longest!

That's: Pneumono-ultra-microscopic-syllicovo-mononucleosis

BTW: I like "ointment" a whole lot better than I like "unguent"!

Cartuni 05-08-2005 05:45 AM

Euphoric – sounds like the feeling to me

Loam – rich, earthy, saying it feels meditational…

Mississippi – (spoken & also spelled out loud) – reminds me of childhood

Flopdoodles – funniest word for breasts I've ever heard

cowudders14 05-08-2005 06:52 AM

I've been beaten to it, but the best word to me is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - from Mary Poppins, for those who don't know it.

Oh, and also "moo". It's such a useful word. You can tell someone to "moo off" and you are still being polite, you can enter someones house and greet them with "moo!" (We usually do!), you can randomly change many verbs with moo - "Shall we moo off then?" "Let's moo!" "Time to moo". "Moooo!" (Yes). "Mooo..." (No)
It's great!

Ah yes, my first vanity plate ~20yrs ago. (without the "e")

Now I'd choose thwart. As in: Curses, I'm being thwarted!

Both words have found a special super-glue like bond to my existence, clinging much like that half-Indian tracker in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. "Who are those guys?"
