Well, apparently air travelers can. According to the TSA, passengers hurrying through security checkpoints left exactly $321,329.48 in pocket change and currency at the nation’s 429 airports over a twelve month period October ’03 through the end of September. The money is collected by the individual airports and periodically deposited in the general fund of the U.S. Treasury Department. What about larger personal belongings that go unclaimed? Some are donated to charities, some are sold on a local basis, and some states, like California and Kentucky actually sell items on eBay.
General Fund..... shame that it doesn't go to something more specific... but still at least it's not something that the screeners get to keep for a Pizza Party or Beer fest....

That money should be reinvested in Airport security. Not that it would amount to much, but still.

Wow... that's a lot of spare change.

Why not use it to help fund No Child Left Behind?

Joke!!

Give to charity.

I second the charity giving - otherwise this is just an indirect airport tax.

That was precisely my first thought. It'll never go that way though...

Sure added up though didn't it?

I recall seeing something on the tube about where unclaimed baggage winds up. Something like a warehouse in Atlanta where you can go in and buy everything from dentures to fur coats.
