Lake Worth man accused of 'political attack' on girlfriend

sun-sentinel.com

October 27, 2004, 1:45 PM EDT

WEST PALM BEACH – An 18-year-old Marine recruit remained in jail on Wednesday, charged with threatening to stab his girlfriend over her choice for president, news partner NewsChannel 5 reported in its noon broadcast.

The enlistee, Steven Scott Soper, of Lake Worth, became enraged Tuesday night when his 18-year-old girlfriend said she was leaving him -- and voting for John Kerry for president.

Soper, who will enter the Marines as soon as he passes the GED test, solidly supports Bush. He allegedly told girlfriend Stacey Silheira, "You'll never live to see the election."

Palm Beach Sheriff's Office deputies called to the home in Lake Worth said they had to use a Taser – an electronic stun gun – to subdue Soper. They described Soper as enraged and said he was holding Silheira captive. He was armed with a screwdriver and threatening to stab her in the neck, they said. When Silheira eventually broke free a deputy fired the Taser, shocking him into submission.

Charged with aggravated assault, Soper remains in jail without bond until he undergoes a psychiatric exam, NewsChannel 5 reported.

My guess is that the Marines will be better off without him.

I can guess the path where this thread will go.

StickODynomite 10-27-2004 06:40 PM

Holy crap, he wanted to stab her in the neck w/ a screwdriver? ? PSYCHO.

JaySpencer 10-27-2004 06:44 PM

Wow! Imagine what he would have been like on a battle front? *Pictures the platoon leader saying: Son? See that tank? Here's a bayonet, they're Kerry supporters, have at 'em!"*

It's people like that that screw stuff like Abu Ghirab up. I wish we weren't so needy of troops so we could have higher standards as to who gets in.

Pragma 10-27-2004 07:03 PM

This incident does not at all reflect upon the Marine Corps, the President, or anyone except for the seriously disturbed young man in the incident. Anyone who says otherwise is using a tragic situation to cause trouble.

I don't think this gives Bush supporters a bad name at all. This person is obviously disturbed and needs lots of help. More than anything, I'm concerned that the military did not discover this mental case beforehand.

Imagine him with a machine gun ...

It said he was a recruit and that he hadn't passed his GED yet. I'm sure all the Marines had been doing with him up until this point was letting the recruiters talk to him about being a Marine. From what I know about these conversations, I don't really see where incredibly-touchy-issue-that-would-make-him-try-to-stab-his-girlfriend would have had an opportunity to come up.

For some reason, this came to mind

Quote:

And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

I think we are all overlooking the coolest part of this thread, which is the webpage posted in a thread. How did ya do that? :D

Lockjaw 10-28-2004 04:16 AM

I was thinking the same thing actually...

But yeah this guy is a nut job but I gotta wonder what do you do with him? It's obvious he's not going to the military(kind of glad at that as he might frag his CO if he disagreed with him), do you stick him in jail for a couple of years? A person that unstable will be warped by prison and likely will come out even more violent.

Does this mean that he may not get a chance to actually cast a vote himself?. That's just... poetic. ;)

Glory's Sun 10-28-2004 05:42 AM

don't the marines actually take felons?? A friend of mine who is an ex-marine said they did. In any case, the guy was totally out of line for going that far with the vote thing. It's a sad sad world

Nefir 10-28-2004 06:20 AM

Not bashing any administration in particular, but with the demand for more and more troops for our volunteer army, the standards will have to keep dropping to keep up with the turnover. I think we'll be seeing lots more nut-job cases in the future.

Fanaticism in anything is a bad thing, whether religion, politics, or ice cream flavors. Still, this guy sounds like a timebomb waiting to go off for any reason whatsoever...

timalkin 10-28-2004 06:47 AM

You aren't a Marine recruit until you step foot inside MCRD San Diego or Paris Island.

I don't see how this could damage the Bush campaign. The vast majority of Bush supporters don't threaten to stab Kerry supporters with screw drivers.

tropple 10-28-2004 08:44 AM

True, true.....but with the amount of mudslinging that has already taken place in this election, I wouldn't put it past either party to use an incident like this to their advantage. Sad. :hmm:

Another example of why we drill it into the young squids' heads NOT to fuck up out in town. The first chance they get, the local papers will prominently mention the fact that you are military which reflects great discredit on your command, branch, and the military. For example, "USS GEORGE WASHINGTON SAILOR CHARGED IN HIT AND RUN" instead of "Norfolk Man, 19, Charged in Hit and Run". Then next time your command wants to work with the community on something the locals drag out the newspaper clippings and figure that the few retards at every command are indicative of the entire command.

Here, although this doorknob's military affiliation isn't in the headline, it's mentioned three times in the first three sentences.

Not saying this guy doesn't deserve whatever he gets. It's actually fortunate because now this punk won't ever sniff the Marines and nobody got hurt.

I'm willing to bet it had less to do with her choice of president, and more to do with her breaking up with him. He sounds like a very possesive, domineering asshole. The negatively charged political atmosphere just added to the problem.
