The word disaster comes from the latin words dis and aster. dis means 2, and aster means star. The latin word disaster meant two stars hitting each other and the ensuing chaos caused by this would definitly be a "disaster" as we term it.

PICKADD variable in AutoCAD allows you to toggle the selection of multiple objects within most commands.
VIEWRES variable set lower allows for faster screen regeneration but facets the rendition of circular objects such as arcs, circles and splines. ISAVEPERCENT variable adjusts the speed of file saving at the expense of file size. |

I can. Or at least I could, I apparently have lost a little flexibilty since then, but I can reach my elbow with my tongue and lick it a little. After a few tries I finally got it where I was barely licking the tip of my elbow, but it's hard to tell because of my crappy webcam. http://www.geocities.com/brhancock21/photo6.jpg So I'm probably nowhere near as good as that kid, but I still like to delude myself. And if you think that pic doesn't count, then you try doing it, it's really hard. |
that's incredibly incredible.

The answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42.
As for Phi... well, there's a problem with the randomness of the "divine ratio". Let's take, for instance, the number 2. Most animals have 2 eyes, 2 ears and two nostrils. Bipedal creatures each have 2 arms and 2 legs. Most male mammals have two testes. Birds have two wings, many fish have two gills. Humans are born with two lungs. If I take a pie, and slice it in half, there are 2 pieces. If I slice it in half the other way, each of the 2 original pieces now have 2 pieces. Reproduction requires male and female counterparts... two creatures in all (in most cases, of course). 2 is the "number of opposites". Night and Day, Good and Evil, Tall and Short, Wise and Ignorant, Wide and Narrow, White and Black, Here and There. Stereo requires exactly 2 sounds sources. And since stereo sounds better than mono, perhaps 2 is the "audiophile number" as well. I'm sure I could go on for a great length. In fact, I will post this explanation in the Phi thread as well (mods can delete it from here if the dual post is a problem). Phi is just haphazard luck in most mathemeticians books. |

----------- The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time television was Fred and Wilma Flintstone. (Lucy and Ricky Ricardo managed to get pregnant while sleeping in twin beds) 60 minutes is the only tv show without a theme song. If you were spelling out numbers, you would not reach the letter A until you got to one thousand. |
If the DNA molecule was a meter wide, it would be 500 miles long, and the replisome which replicates it would be the size of a FedEx truck, and travel down the length of the molecule replicating base pairs at 375 mph, making a mistake only every 106 miles, and that mistake will probably be repaired.

Jumping on mo42's DNA shaz
On Immortality: Immortality would be possible if perfect replication were possible. There are immortal cancer cells which have 'turned off' aging, and will live as long as they get nutrients (potentially forever). Unfortunately programmed cell death and aging is one of your main defenses against cancer. On cancer/mutations: An average rate of mutation in a human is between one in one million and one in 500 million depending on environmental variables. Unfortunately you undergo replication billions of times each day, so the rate of mutation is rather high. However as mo42 mentioned, most mistakes are repaired, but: You suffer 14 non repaired mutations in your blood cells each day, many more in your skin/intestine lining So are you going to get cancer? Probably only if you have genetic disposition for it; there are only a handful of cancer causing genes, and the chance of randomly incurring a mutation in one is extremely improbable. However your chance of inheriting a mutation in a cancer causing gene is more likely. edit: extra word |
Interesting stuff mo42 and reiii... I'm curious though, what are the purposes of anti-oxidants in this formula. Do they not help expediate repairs to problem areas? Also, unrepaired mutations in blood cells seem almost moot. Most people replenish their blood supplies every x days, and I don't believe blood cells replicate themselves, and therefore cannot propogate bad structure. Correct?
|
Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow, yes, as opposed to replicating like muscle cells.
Antioxidants are thought to help prevent oxygen and hydroxyl radicals from forming in cells, although since the study of antioxidants is recent, we aren't sure yet. Most of the time, in a chemical reaction, electrons will act in pairs. However, if an oxygen atom or OH group with an unpaired electron is present, it will react with just about anything it's next to (including a DNA molecule, which is normally unreactive to O2 and OH) and thus have the potential to wreck your DNA structure, among other things. Edited for mis-statement |
Also u.v. rays are really good at forming the free radicals mo42 is talking about. You form tasty things called pyrimidine dimers, which are incorrectly bonded ajacent DNA molecules.

Ack, I should've just said hair cells or intestinal cells (which multiply several times faster than the other cells in the body) rather than assuming that muscle cells worked the way I thought they did.
Nevertheless, 7% of all worldwide electricity for anything industrial is used for making aluminum, and the percentage in the United States is some ridiculous number that I can't find anywhere and I sold the textbook with the number in it. |

The total of any combination of multiple of 9 will equal a factor of 9 when added to itself, ie: 9x12 equals 108/ 1+0+8=9. Or, 9x212=1908/1+9+0+8=18
