It seems that we have a decent amount of current/former/future miltary on this board. Also, having re-read an old thread I posted on, some of us may have met, worked together/near/etc.

Post your service info; read the info of others, there may be some weird reunions waiting in the wings.

Me: US Navy, 91-95, was a MM3 then became a BT3 (E-4).

MEPS = San Diego (I was originally going to MEPS in Los Angeles, but the riots screwed that up. Several guys at the San Diego MEPS had files that were burned and charred because the L.A. MEPS building was on fire)

Bootcamp: Naval Training Center, Orlando

"A" School: Orlando as well, Nuke School. I am proud to have been "Nuclear Waste".

Duty Stations:

TAD Orlando - Military Police

USS Seattle (AOE-3), Leonardo, New Jersey. Yes, my base was walking distance from the infamous Stop-n-Shop from Clerks. We did two cruises, one in the gulf bringing in the tail-end of the war (GULF I). We were also parked outside of Haiti during that whole crises in '94, I believe, and we supported the Theodore Roosevelt battlegroup in the beginning of the whole Bosnia mess.

Ports visited: GITMO, Cuba - Rosie Roads, Puerto Rico - Bahamas - Rota, Spain - Augusta Bay, Sicily - Naples, Italy - Haifa, Israel - Cairo, Egypt - Bahrain; and a few others that I forget.

TAD - Naples, then TAD Norfolk waiting to get out.

Any chance I ran into any of you? I know that a few of us shared/new my old C.O. (Hoewing).

Naval Air Station Oceana AIMD Sea Operational Detachment, Virginia Beach 1996-2000. Deployed aboard USS Kitty Hawk (1997) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower twice (98 and 2000). Rotated to shore duty at AIMD from 2000-2003.

USS George Washington (CVN-73), Norfolk, VA. Deployed for the 2004 cruise.

Ports visited: St. Maarten, D/FWI, Nassau Bahamas, Souda Bay (x2), Corfu (x2) and Rhodes Greece, Naples (x2) and Trieste Italy, Cartagena Spain, Perth Australia, Hobart Tasmania, Marseilles and Cannes France, Antalya Turkey (x2), Haifa Israel, Dubrovnik Croatia, Lisbon Portugal, Bahrain, and of course, the sandbox, Jebel Ali UAE (x7). I've also made stops in Key West and Pearl Harbor.

It's been the best time of my life. In fact, I'm re-enlisting for 6 more years on my 30th birthday, the 29th of this month. $30,000 SRB! Can't turn that down.

Me: US Army, 1991-1995

MOS = 52 Charlie - Utilities Equipment Repairer. Glorified airconditioner mechanic.

MEPS = Houston, Texas.

Bootcamp = Ft. McClellan, Alabama. Was some stupid Pro-Train deal where we had reserve drill instructors rotating out every two weeks. Yes that sucked. The base is now closed. Was home to MP and Chemical school but I was sent there for Pro-Train.

AIT = Advanced Individual Training for 52 Charlie, Utilities Equipment Repairer was at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia for four months. Very nice base. Few miles from Washington D.C. The school has since closed down and moved. Not sure where it is now.

Duty Stations:

First duty station was with Charlie Company, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division Korea. I was stationed for a year at Camp Stanley. The local ville was called Ouijonbou. The camp was nice for its size. Had a PX, mini snack bar, bowling alley, barber shop, bank, Stars and Stripes book store, a few shops, NCO club, video store, a small class six and a movie theater. Compared to the other smaller camps around we had it made. The camp was home to division artillery and aviation headquarters for 2nd Infantry. Being my first duty stationed I loved it there.

Second duty stationed I was assigned to Head Quarters and Headquarters Troop, Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Ft. Bliss, Texas. The base was nice. My first duty station in the states. It kind of sucked. El Paso itself was nice for a small town. Lots of concerts rolled through towns. Juarez, Mexico was a party town. Went to Fort Irwin for NTC one year. That was fun. One big fight between regiment and their OPFOR. Everyone and everything had MILES gear on. I got straffed by an A-6 Intruder that dropped flares on a duece and a half truck. My MILES went off and I was dead. It was pretty cool. We also had the OPFOR roll up to our camp entrance and open up on them. They came in and went directly for our TOC. My commander grabbed us and we caught them just as they where cutting into the TOC's concertina wire and we opened up on them. That was pretty cool. So Irwin was the highlight of my time at Ft. Bliss.

Overall my time in the Army was fun and I'd do it all over again if I could.

most memorable moment: in Germany during our AT, we were in a shop rebuilding Humvee transmissions...after a few 'test' trannies, they let us loose and let us rebuild and test them on our own.

I'm usually a pretty meticulous guy, but after a few days of repetitive motion, I started getting sloppy and after fixing one tranny, I accidentally left the 'puller' in the tranny after I put it together.

ironically, they chose my tranny to test on the humvee...and once they started it, the LOUD BANG from the tranny and the driveline falling off the humvee was pretty bad. needless to say, I ended up cleaning up the whole shop.


next most memorable moment: we had to qualify with our M-16's at Ft. Irwin during one AT, and we managed to pick up some IRR personnel to train with us. the guy in the foxhole next to me was cool, but was pretty cross-eyed. I'm a pretty bad shot (I usually barely qualify), but this time, I managed to shoot 30 instead of my usual 24-25.

so, we brought our target cards up, and the guy from IRR in the foxhole next to me had NO holes at all on his card...and he kept insisting that he shot at the target.

I guess we were both pretty bad shots...two soldiers with forty rounds each...only got 30 rounds on one target.



I'm now an engineer working for a major defense contractor with battlefield digitization. is it sad to say that I've been exposed to more of the real military AFTER I finished drilling with my unit? My job has taken me to Ft. Hood, Ft. Polk, Ft. Drum, Ft. Lewis, Ft. Hauchuca...and I sure am glad the systems we're working on are saving lives out in Iraq and Afghanistan.

so, here's a HOOAH (or WHOOSHAH for you artillery folks) for everyone here...for their service...for their camaraderie...

At SAC HQ, we had more flag officers than most bases have butterbars. 99.9% of the generals were just cooler than shit, 'cause they've made it. They are where thay were going, and it's time to lighten up. Who was the 3 star that liked to cut up, Boo. If he was SAC, and it was between '84 and '89, odds are good that I knew him. That was one of the advantages of being in the Elite Guard. You got to schmooze with the top of the crop. In fact, it was a 2 star that put me in for my Meritorious Service Medal.

I did... that was my PT for the year. The views are breathtaking. I took the MWR tours to the Dead Sea and Jerusalem. It's a shame that it will probably be a while before a CVN makes another port visit there.

Yes, you were the bane of all us poor E-1s, E-2s, and E-3s.

We had a SSgt. assistant flight chief who was worse than any of us poor airmen, though. This guy snored. On certain midshifts when we knew no one was monitoring our radios, we'd sneak up on his patrol (he always parked in the same spot) and key our mics so everyone could hear him.

I'm not actually in the service, but I'm a defense contractor working with the Army. I guess they're similar in some ways... I'm on and off post in Monmouth, Polk, Sill, Stewart, Aberdeen, WSMR, and I get yelled at by a lieutenant colonel every now and then. I'm also a member of AUSA and will be showing off some of our new hardware at the upcoming tradeshow. I've thought seriously in the past about enlisting, but I've always been a scrawny computer geek. It only makes sense for me to serve my country the best way I can. I take a lot of pride making sure you guys have the best technology available out their in the field.

By the way, it occurred to me that discussion is inherently flawed because many of the people that should be posting to this thread are probably without internet access overseas.
