American Ignorance About Canada

I posted on another board to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. This is because in Canada today is Thanksgiving unlike the US who has it next month. There were a few questions about why Canada holds Thanksgiving when it does so I decided to play a bit with the predominately American membership of the board. Needless to say it became hillarious.

Here is a link to the thread.

I am so glad this forum is not at all like some of the other forums on the internet... because those forums are laughable and infantile.

Suave 10-11-2004 11:20 PM

I'm Canadian and I don't even know why we celebrate Thanksgiving. I always assumed we stole it from the Americans. Mmm, turkey.

Well the Americans celebrate becuase of the whole deal with Pilgrims and stuff. Us Canadians celebrate the harvest season. It doesnt really apply anymore since now we can pretty much grow anything all year round no matter what the conditions. Like winter wheat and garlic in the winter, rhubarb in the early spring, pumpkins and corn in the fall, and strawberries in the summer. Just to name a very limited list.

Hey, don't forget about the English ignorance.

I haven't got a clue what's going on here.

Just so ya know... The term "winter wheat" doesn't mean that it actually grows during the winter. Well at least not here in Canada anyway. Also, corn isn't really "grown" in the fall, it more like it's planted in the spring like most other crops and harvested in the fall. Same goes for pumpkins.

This time of year still is in general the end of the harvest here in Canada. Anything that grows outside (the vast majority of our crops) is harvested in the fall.

I give my friend crap all the time because he is canadian. We joke around all the time and I am still amazed that canadians have TV and clean water, or is that Mexico(?) /shrug

there's nothing wrong with some joking in the off topic area of a tech forum.
this forum was designed to specifically address "off topic" issues, so its expected that they'd be taken more seriously here.

you could say the same about the tilted motors section when you compare it to the wealth of knowledge available on other automotive forums.

you have to look at in perspective

bad_husband 10-13-2004 07:14 AM

I always have to laugh when canadians talk about how ignorant americans are about Canada when the vast majority of candians are pretty ignorant about the states. Now don't get me wrong here, I'm a dual citizen and have spent about half my life in each country (in canada right now) and I've just noticed that its definately a two way street.

Destrox 10-13-2004 07:25 AM

Dont worry, this same ignorance you mention about Americans to Canadians, goes both ways. I often get sick and tired of Canadians ignorance to Americans.

The problem is not our nationality, its just that we are human. We are naturally ignorant.

thefictionweliv 10-13-2004 07:56 AM

And we are taught from gradeschool that Canadians are inferior......

Just kidding.

cocacolafun 10-13-2004 08:59 AM

I am a french Canadian ... and we own Celine Dion! Ah Ah Ah!

To tell you the truth, there is as much people in Canada that know the president name (USA) than the prime minister (CA).

When I asked my wife, she knew Bush, but not Martin!

"And we are taught from gradeschool that Canadians are inferior......"

I didn't think that anyone was taught anything aboot us Canadians. I always figured you fed your hunger for knowledge of Canada with grainy underground bootleg copies of 1940's mountie movies and photocopies of photocopies of a 1972 Yukon tourism brochure traded behind the school gymnasium.

Irishsean 10-14-2004 10:06 AM

Canadians are french spies sent to steal the riches of north america! At least thats what I was taught in school!

bad_husband 10-14-2004 10:51 AM

Probably because the President of the USA is much more in the spotlight than the PM of CA?

If you asked me the PM of CA's name before now, I would've drawn a blank. Why? Because it doesn't really matter to me, just like it doesn't really matter to you what our president's name is. You just hear it more often, so of course you'll know. Do you know the leader of Nigera/Ecuador/Japan? I don't.

Am I ignorant? No. Do you know C++? I do. If you don't, are you ignorant? ;)

Strangly though, the first American thanksgiving happened in the spring. It was a thanksgiving not for harvest, but for actually living through the winter. Later it was changed to harvest thanksgiving.

If only the puritans had died that winter...

byesman 10-14-2004 11:49 AM

"It can't be Thanksgiving without polar bears, no sir." Ohh man, that is classic. I'm sitting here at work laughing, my staff is looking at me like I'm crazy.

I can never forgive Canada for letting Celine and George Michael's come to the US.

Averett 10-14-2004 12:33 PM

George Michael is British.

All can see in that statement is "George Micheal's come." It's like being in a public toilet.

Find a Canadian who can name all fifty States, and I'll re-learn the Provinces.

canuckguy 10-14-2004 02:26 PM

i work for an american based company in canada so all my clients and contacts are american. I like that nobody knows much about us, i could careless about people knowing that we buy all our snow from the russians and its trucked in using a secret bridge, our cars run on square tires and that yes, we all know Jeff from winnipeg.

Dude most Americans can't name all fifty States.

Destrox 10-14-2004 07:35 PM

I'm sorry but I you cant name the 50 states, you did somthing wrong, not our education.

Lockjaw 10-14-2004 07:38 PM

Doesn't change that sad but very true fact. Try it out ask your coworkers tomorrow to name the 50 states off the top of their heads. I promise you most won't be able to.

guthmund 10-14-2004 08:38 PM

I know them all and the state capitals thanks to Wakko, Yakko and Dot.

Quote:

WAKKO'S AMERICA (Episode 21)
Music traditional (Turkey in the Straw). Lyrics by Randy Rogel.

Wakko:
Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Indianapolis, Indiana
And Columbus is the capital of Ohio
There's Montgomery, Alabama, south of Helena, Montana
Then there's Denver, Colorado, under Boise, Idaho.

Texas has Austin, then we go north
To Massachusetts' Boston, and Albany, New York
Tallahassee, Florida, and Washington, D.C.
Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Nashville, Tennessee.

Elvis used to hang out there a lot, ya know.

Trenton's in New Jersey, north of Jefferson, Missouri
You've got Richmond in Virginia; South Dakota has Pierre
Harrisburg's in Pennsylvania and Augusta's up in Maine
And here is Providence, Rhode Island, next to Dover, Delaware.

Concord, New Hampshire, just a quick jaunt
To Montpelier, which is up in Vermont
Hartford's in Connecticut, so pretty in the fall
And Kansas has Topeka; Minnesota has St Paul.

Juneau's in Alaska and there's Lincoln in Nebraska
And it's Raleigh out in North Carolina and then
There's Madison, Wisconsin, and Olympia in Washington
Phoenix, Arizona, and Lansing, Michigan.

Here's Honolulu; Hawaii's a joy
Jackson, Mississippi, and Springfield, Illinois
South Carolina with Columbia down the way
And Annapolis in Maryland on Chesapeake Bay.

They have wonderful clam chowder.

Cheyenne is in Wyomin' and perhaps you make your home in
Salt Lake City out in Utah, where the Buffalo roam
Atlanta's down in Georgia, and there's Bismarck, North Dakota
And you can live in Frankfort in your old Kentucky home.

Salem in Oregon; from there we join
Little Rock in Arkansas; Iowa's got Des Moines
Sacramento, California; Oklahoma and its city
Charleston, West Virginia, and Nevada, Carson City.

That's all the capitals there are!

I was under the impression that all Canadians were socialist hockey fanatics with an inferiority complex....was I misled? j/k :D

I know quite a few Canadians. In real life, even. They all seem to be pretty well-rounded folks.

ncgti 10-15-2004 05:43 AM

Canada is a great place. We go up there every summer. The scenery is great, people are warm and friendly and businesses are willing to go the extra mile for you. We were running late to pick up something at a Home Depot and they kept it open for an extra 30 minutes until we got there. For a measly $150 purchase.

Depending on who wins the election, we may move up there ;)

I could easily put money down that you pissed off many people doing that. THey make act all peachy, but nobody wants to go home 30 min late due to somone else not being on time when working a job like that.

That or 4 years in retail has tainted my feelings towards poeple running late when we are closing....

portereight 10-15-2004 07:27 AM

"I could easily put money down that you pissed off many people doing that."
But therin lies the difference. Many (not all by a long shot) but many Canadians are able to see things from both sides, and are often willing to inconvenience themselves to help someone else. Other people can see the same situation from either side, but only see how they are being affected. "F%#$ing Home Depot moron couldn't stay 30 extra minutes for me. The b&*#&ard" and then same person in a similar situation could say ""F%#$ing moron customer couldn't get their thumb out and get here 30 minutes earlier. The b&*#ard".

Destrox 10-15-2004 07:37 AM

I just dont beleive a sterotype such as the one you've said. I've met many Canadians before, and they are just the same as Americans, some good some bad. They simply dont match your picture perfect idea. Ah well, no sense arguing.

Averett 10-15-2004 07:40 AM

You can say bastard and fucking here :)

I know a bit about Canada and Canadians. I have a friend in Alberta who I've talked to for over 3 years now so I've picked up a lot by knowing him. And now I've got a Canadian boyfriend, so that helps matters too ;) I love it there, but it's not much different from the States.

Cept for the wierd flashing green lights... Still get confused at those..

astralusion 10-15-2004 08:01 AM

i like canada...it's a nice place, though i must say most of what i know about it i learned from arrogant worms songs...well not really, but at least in california, you learn much more about mexico than canada, cept for the entire 54 40 or fight thing...yeah

Grace, Too 10-15-2004 10:06 AM

As a super nationalistic Canadian, I'm glad to see a little bit of American ignorance being washed away, and some new knowledge is being introduced... I"m glad there is interest. I love Canada, and I love talking about it. As I type this I"m wearing my team Canada hockey jersey. Got questions, ask away... I'd love to help out.

Take Care,
Dan
