In a locket
I recently bought a locket to take with me when I go to see my girlfriend, who lives across the atlantic from me. For reasons beyond our control, I can no longer go when we had originally planned. So I want to send the locket snailmail.
I'm racking my brains over what to put in it before I send it. I want it to be special, something more than just a photo. But I can't think what. Any suggestions from the TFP ladies? |
Have it engraved with a special date? Like when you met or something -- or some meaningful phrase...
Is there a special place they you've been with her... Sent her flowers? (enclose a flower petal or two) |
A lock of your hair tied with a tiny ribbon would be nice.
If you can afford it, her birthstone (of course one that would fit in the locket and one that is not set into a ring). To console her during your absence, and to remind her of you when she is wearing the locket, enclose a sliver of nutmeg. (Nutmeg symbolizes consolation). |
oooooh -- nutmeg is good....
Other things : Rosemary - symbol of remembrance and fidelity Violets - Hope and faithfulness http://www.gardencards.biz/html/flowermeanings.htm this dictionary might give you more ideas... You could also enclose on a small piece of paper, the words I love you, I care, you're special -- whatever you're feeling in Hindu or Japanese characters (the charaters are pretty cool), or write it in a language that's meaningful to you and her. |
Maleficent,
Great link. I'm now going to spend some time browsing that site. Thanks. |
Hmm, this is kind of the problem, we've never met face to face. Yeah there's a story here... heh. So dates are good, but places we've been... not so.
Hair is a nice idea, I could put that in one half and a pic in the other maybe. Would flower petals be okay in there? They're not going to wither up and go weird? |
That's so sweet...
If you dry the flower it will hold up Press the flower before putting it it-- takes a few days -- simple to do - - just put the flower between paper wax paper and put the wax paper in a paper towel or two - -then put it in between two heavy books. leave it alone for a few days. |
sounds like a good idea.. let us know what you do with it!! Sounds like mal is full of romantic ideas.. :p

That's wonderful. Her favourite flowers are pink roses, I already know that, so I'll track a petal or two down. I suppose if I dried them they would lose their scent? Sorry to be dense, I don't really go for flowers.
I was thinking also of drawing something to go in there, rather than a photo. I could do a little thumbnail sketch from a pic I've taken or something. The nutmeg idea sounds nice too. |
If you have some thin paper (like rice paper) you can write a poem or something personal and enclose it with the flower petals.
Oops, just saw your 2nd paragraph. Yes, a drawing by you would be nice also. I think it's more meaningful when it's something from you. There you have it: a beautiful locket, some dried rose petals, a drawing by you, and a sliver of nutmeg. All wrapped beautifully and cushioned in jewelers cotton. Lucky lady. :) |
Thanks so much for these ideas. You guys are the greatest!

------------ If you have the time, you could always get some sort of Rose scented natural oil, and scent the paper with it, that way the locket could be somewhat scented. although that might clash with the nutmeg -- but sounds like you have a winner -- Lucky lady she is.... |
You can use a detail brush with a single bristle to write a poem or a little note on a dried flower petal. Just make sure the ink is thin enough to not glob up and thick enough to not bleed
