A sad day for whiskey fans

Jack Daniels is telling the media that it's cutting its No.7 recipe's alcohol content from 43% to 40% because people have requested a less potent drink.

Now why can't people just add a bit of water if they're that worried about the potency? Where does that leave us people that like the potency? We can just go and add alcohol...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

That's fine... I wouldn't drink Jack if you paid me.

But I do agree... That's really stupid. There should be more alcohol... bump it up to 47%.

I just happen to have a fond attachment to Jack after a few years of drinking many kinds of alcohol and whiskeys. Sure, 3% isn't that much, but changing such a classic recipe for a few wussies is uncalled for.

It's the 2nd most popular whiskey in the world. Why change it for a few people with sensitve tongues?

Hmmm. Sounds like the potato chip makers who increased the size of the bag, but gave the same amount of chips, and just added more air - for a bigger price.

Personally, I prefer Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, Bulleit, and Wild Turkey 101. Jack is good in a pinch, but if they're going to start shortshrifting on the alcohol volume, then it's time to vote with your feet and your wallet.

I'm a fan of Wild Turkey, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Jack - and it's sad to see them changing the recipe.

Time to stock up on Jack now, so I don't have to worry about the "Jack lite"

-Ever-: Elaine and sponges= Gaphawhahaha, too funny! .

Who are they foolin'? So people will just drink more if the booze is diluted. Ohhh wait, what was I thinking?!!! Duh, can you say profit's?

I can just see hubby and I pulling the "scrounging around town" if the powers-that-be decided to enforce prohibition again. "What, you don't even have a fifth of "cheap ass vodka" in stock?". "Dammit, we need to go online and find some blueprints for "how to make a still"!

O'kay, the prohibition excuse is just that, an excuse, we make our own anyway . Seriously, we like Sky vodka, that shit is smoooooth. But we're not picky, Kamchatka is what we buy most of the time due to finances...

Hubby flew from Michigan to Cali. a month ago and bought some vodka in Cali. called (I think) White Wolf. No point here except the label was pretty cool looking with a (you guessed it!) white wolf on it. I took a picture of it and tossed the bottle. He's got to go to Oregon tomorrow and decided instead of the typical shot glass souvinear, he's going to look for unusual or local vodka bottles! Like I said, no point.....just rammbling!

that is just insane. 3% is jack shit (see what I did there!) Seriously, it's probably to comply with the local laws of some place or another, and the "people have requested it" is probably just their marketing spin on it.

Side note: I actually have an 8x10 promotional photo of Jack Daniel, back in college I framed it and put it on the shelf in my room, people would come by and ask if it was one of my ancestors

For some reason unknown to me, my entire family think I'm Jack Daniels' biggest fan. Every christmas and birthday I get 4 or 5 bottles of the stuff.

I'll drink it... but it would be nice to get a few pairs of socks or some underpants once in a while.

So does anyone here drink real whiskey?

The Irish stuff I'm talking about, of course.

The "water of life", or Uisce Beatha, pronounced ISka Baha, from which the word whiskey is derived.

Just curious...

Me? I like it. But then again, that's to be assumed now, isn't it? :-)

I drink the Irish stuff on occasion, namely Black Bush or Jameson, but I find it too sweet for my taste. I like the smokier bourbons and scotches. I took a trip to bourbon country to check out a few of the distilleries last year and definitely would move into a barrel house if I could! The aroma of the "Angel's Share" permeates everything, in a good way. It kind of reminds one of the coffee conundrum, why does the odor please the senses more than the actual product!

Of course, coffee doesn't get you drunk.

I've never tried JD. or any Bourbon myself. Been a Crown Royal drinker for years, and more recently a McCallan, Talisker or Lagavulin consumer.

What's the flavour of JD, JB etc got to sell it? Should I invest the $40 in a 26'er?

a funny thing about jack daniel's - it's made in a dry county. they can make there but can only sell it in "commemerative decanters".

janey - bourbon/tenessee whiskey's (jd isn't technically a bourbon) are characterized by a smokey task that comes from aging in charred barrels and/or charcoal filtering. if you want something comparable to mccallan or talisker in quality try Bakers (a beam product) or Basil Hayden. both are excellent.

Thanks 2sheds (is that short for Arthur '2sheds' Jackson?) The Tennessee whisky sounds nice. I think that I will try it. I like the peaty/smokiness of the Islay & Speyside malts, so this may be a good exploration.

My personal favorite right now is "Knob Creek" It is a Beam product. But considered a small batch bourbon. Someone mentioned it earlier. Damn good!! Try it, you will not let Jack touch you lips afterwards.

halx- I used to be a Makers fan. It is an incredible drink. And I really did not think it could get much better. I still do ocassionally drink it. Please... just give Knob Creek a try. Trust me.... you won't feel a thing.
