So I did it - I joined the Navy

Well, as of about a week ago I signed up for the United States Navy.

I am going to be a CTR (Cryptologic Technician - Collection) and in January I'm taking the DLAB again, and if I pass (got an 84 last time, you need a 95) I'm going to reclass to CTI, which is basically a linguist. I don't leave until March, and the wait is killing me.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on my earlier posts.

Congratulations, and good luck.

My brother's a crypto PO1 (E-6 for non-navy people), and he's actually been a recruiter for almost a year now. Don't know specifically what kind of crypto he does, but when he's out with the Fleet, he's on tin cans. Hope you enjoy what you do, and good luck with the DLAB. Took it myself, and at 0600 with no caffeine and 2 hours sleep, what I remember of it was that it was pretty danged weird. Only advice I could give (same goes for ASVAB) is practice pattern-recognition activities. All languages (or crypto) comes with base "rules" of enciphering/deciphering, and that's what the DLAB tests--your ability to encipher/decipher information in a timed, quantitative test.

Cool, my uncle is a Spook (term used for Cryptos). Good luck in the Navy, we always could use more good men.

Good for you and great for all of us who are appreciative citizens - in fact, great for all of us.

All the best!

Then how about living it up while you're still alive?

Best of luck.

Have fun on those port calls, future squid!

One of my best friends joined the Navy about 4-5 months ago. She says so far it has been one of the best experiences of her life. She was always overweight, but when I saw her after her boot camp, she was pretty hot. I was kinda stunned, actually, by her change, physical and mental. Both for the better!

Good luck!

You got a thing for white polyester bellbottoms?

Carno 08-07-2004 12:54 PM

Awesome bro. Good luck.

After college I'm probably going to join the Navy as well.

metalgeek 08-07-2004 06:03 PM

Pragma 08-07-2004 06:41 PM

not to mention that marines are part of the Navy. None of those four branches are 'Marines'.

That was pretty funny!

Emphant, remember in boot camp it's nothing personal and much of the stuff done is not going to make or break the Navy, it's all about paying attention to detail. They just want to see how good you pay attention to detail. Don't take things personally.

Once you get done with your schools and get assigned to a permanent base or naval vessel get as much schooling as you can get or even go for a degree if you get stationed in port and can go to college in the evenings.

Or you could just do like me forget all that and just go out and party.

emphant 08-09-2004 09:25 AM

Thanks everyone.

I've been trying to work out as much as I can and get in the absolute best shape possible. I'm taking twenty credits this semester in college as an attempt to get enough before I leave to go in at E-3. So I'm going to be a busy fellow.

My best friend in in Marine boot camp right now, and I can't wait when he gets back to let him know that yes, his ass rides in Navy equipment. Too funny.

ShaniFaye 08-09-2004 09:30 AM

The Navy has the sexiest uniforms!!!!! (IMO anyway) Good luck and thank you for your future service in keeping America a place where I can say....The Navy has the sexiest uniforms

seriously though....thank you :icare:

Haha, I can already see that's gonna be an interesting conversation

I've got a coworker who's a retired Army drill instructor - he and I have some wild conversations about my plans to join the Marines. Something about "what's the fastest way to kill a Marine? Throw sand at a brick wall and yell 'hit the beach'" ;)
