Quote of the Day - 4 August 2004

Quote:

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'

Ronald Reagan (1911 - 2004) - 40th president of US

Mr Mephisto

That's so funny, but also sad because its so true.

Glava 08-03-2004 08:05 PM

Wow, the great Mr. Mephisto quoting Ronald Reagan? What's next? Tecoyah voting Bush?

Trisk 08-03-2004 09:56 PM

In case anyone doesn't get the connection here...

"America can do better. So tonight we say: help is on the way"
John Kerry

He said this at least three times at the Democratic national convention and there were signs everywhere saying "Help is on the way". He even had the audience chanting it with him.

Hahahaha...

Now THAT made me laugh. :-)

I didn't particularly like Reagan, but I'm an open-minded and fair person. The statement above was certainly worth quoting and is kinda funny.

And, for the record, I really REALLY wish Kerry will win, but I would prefer you vote for Bush than not vote at all. Electoral apathy is killing democracy all over the world...

Apart from Australia, that is, where you are obliged to vote. Crazy Aussies... :-o

Mr Mephisto

The Phenomenon 08-04-2004 01:30 AM

In Belgium you are also forced to vote by law - that is unleszs you have a doctor's note :p

whocarz 08-04-2004 02:17 AM

Required by law to vote? Doesn't sound very democratic to me...

The Phenomenon 08-04-2004 02:34 AM

You are forced to participate in the election.

Its no biggy IMO really.

hulk 08-04-2004 02:59 AM

Yeah, that way the true intention of the people is shown, not the true intention of those who can be arsed going to ballot.

CoachAlan 08-04-2004 03:17 AM

I would prefer that fewer people vote. With every person who doesn't vote, that means MY vote has more power! I think you should all stay home and just let me decide what we're going to do.

President/vice = McCain/Sharpton (by the power of my lone write-in)
Marijuana = A-OK
Gay Marriage = A-OK
Free Trade = A-OK
Flag Burning = A-OK
Bad Words on Radio = A-OK
Death Penalty = Nuh-uh

If you don't like one of my stances above, I urge you: Just stay home!

The Phenomenon 08-04-2004 03:26 AM

The Death penalty would work wonders over here.

unoaman 08-04-2004 03:30 AM

CoachAlan...My feelings precisely. Since you're going to be out anyway, I'll send you my proxie, that way it will be a landslide.

Not too sure about the flag burning, but will trade it for prime time skin...

Trisk 08-04-2004 06:20 AM

Are you serious CoachAllen? Sharpton? That guy is a joke. He brings up all sorts of non-issues as these huge things all the time and he is anti-semetic. IMO, he shouldn't even be given the respect of having his name honerably mentioned in such important events as the Democratic national convention.

For everything else you said, I pretty much agree. I'm just curious as to what it is, exactly, that you find appealing about that man? I'm all for having a good black leader as a vice president of my country...but the key word there is good. There are other African American's in politics who would much better fit the spot. What the African American population needs is a leader who will encourage them to do better, not someone who constantly tries to make excuses for them when they are down.

I'm not trying to get into an argument. I honestly never understood why people liked him. Most people I've come across agree that he is a big joke.

CoachAlan 08-04-2004 01:28 PM

In some ways he is a joke. He made a few errant, inflammatory comments during the primaries that showed why he couldn't be president. But other than that, they guy makes alot of sense.

I've only become familiar with him recently, so I can't speak to his anti-semitism. I haven't seen even a small amount of that, and I have watched or read many of his speeches this season. I love his stances on civil rights and protecting the Constitution. He's something of a peacenick based on what I've heard, and has even taken some initiative in moving warring areas toward peace.

He's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, and that's why he'll only be vice president. As much as I may like him, I like McCain a whole lot better.

If Congress wants to ban flag burning it will need a Constitutional amendment. The reason it needs to change the Constitution to ban this act is because this issue has been to the Supreme Court, and the court ruled that flag burning is protected by both the word and the spirit of the Constitution.

Why would I want to go against something our founding fathers would have supported. You know, "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Much like some people may not like "prime time skin," but banning it is clearly a slap in the face of freedom of the press.

tropple 08-05-2004 03:13 AM

I remember hearing Reagan say that. He was okay.
